How long until the concept of Hell itself becomes too taboo to hold on to? Some minor religious sects come up with weasel definitions for it (Being separate from God, however that's supposed to feel) but how long until it would be the minor sects preaching the whole eternal torment thing?

I don't know how long it will take,, but Freedom of Religion has created a Free Market of Faith.

Religious leaders, at least in the west have no real power to force us to do shit.

Churches are a business.. They perform rituals for special occasions and then ask for handouts. If they don't say things that make you feel all warm and squishy inside,, you go somewhere else.

All the ancient sacred doctrines and traditions can and will be changed once the collection plates start getting light.

It's that or the clergy have to go out and get real jobs.

That's maybe true in America but for example in Germany the church collects taxes.(They also ask for handouts of course) You can opt-out but few people do. Also their isn't much diversity on the market, your city is either catholic or protestant. If you have both churches then you still will never convert to the other side.

The pro side is this system makes the churches lazy because they get their money anyway. They are less aggressive in their marketing.

The problem is religion still does have an influence over people's decisions and it's enough to make politicians try to use religion as a means of propping themselves up. They can't force people to do or don't do something by the sword but there's still plenty they can guilt trip people into doing/not doing.

Isn't that assuredly the case? If you're a smart wealthy elite, why wouldn't you convince the religious working class to vote against their economic self-interest and in favor of yours instead? Religion is a useful tool for that.

I wish we could get out of the two party system, and have viable 3rd parties that better reflect the nuance of political positions. Not like, "if you want fiscal conservatism you have to vote for religious nonsense too" or so on.
