What do you think about metaphysics? Mental masturbation or fundamental study of reality?

Why not both? Some things are fun to think about and may possibly have relevance to normal life but at some point you go too far and realize you're treading into bullshit territory. Same with religion, same with fantasy, etc.

The first one. I don't think they ever came up with something useful.

philosophy is nice and all as long as it remains as a thought experiment and its practitioners recognize that their speculations, however educated and articulate they might be, are not as good as scientific speculations.

I mean, the fact that multiple logically incompatible schools of metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, etc exist shows that philosophical ramblings are not good enough to distinguish truth from falsehood; and thus philosophical postures should not be taken too seriously.

I wouldn't dismiss the field so lightly. Metaphysics has been a stepping stone in developing logic, and is a more useful for developing an organized mind and seeking out multiple opinions than theology. Often times the ideas that philosophy conjectures and gives names to are also proven with science several centuries later.

Science is grounded in philosophy. Epistemology, specifically.

A lot of philosophy exists just for the sake of rationalizing existing beliefs (e.g. all religious philosophy). If you read with a critical eye it isn't hard to spot bad philosophy. The biggest problem in philosophy is that it's riddled with spooks.

This, a lot of scientifically minded people hear shit like arguments for dualism, Kalam orother cosmological arguments and it turns them off of philosophy because they think its just a bunch of rationalizations. The biggest problem I think with philosophy is that pays to much credit to past figures. If you want to learn physics you don't read the works of Newton, Maxwell, or Einstein most of the time. Yet philosophy seems to respect its heroes to much, most of its most important figures know much less about the universe than a typical modern high school graduate.

Metaphysics are haunted by a search for some sort of absolute truth.
