Person 1: I think there's a real disconnect between Islamic, it's teachings, and the countries governed by those teachings and the western world

Person 2: Racist! Terrorism has no religion! But what about the Christians? Stop attacking Muslims! Literally KKK! You must be a Trump supporter!

Repeat for every bombings, dead cartoonist, or gross violation of human rights.

Person 3: The Koran is literally a plan for taking over the world. Most Muslims don't know this because most are illiterate, just like the prophet Mohamed was. And even if they are literate, most haven't read the Koran or have excuses for why this isn't true, just like how most Christians haven't read the Bible or excuses for why it's okay to eat shell fish or be gay. The ones who interpret the Koran as it's written are the terrorists. Treating the rest of the Muslims as anything but readers of the fanfic version of Mohamed's teachings is disingenuous. Mohamed himself was a warlord.

I think in that case it would be a good exercise to think deeply on why people may not agree with you. Not to change your mind or agree with them necessarily, but to isolate the cause of the problem.

Gotta say the bible is more coherent and interesting to read than the quran. The narratives flow better whereas in the quran the stories are often simply referenced, and it's all over the place. The quran is more like reading a political text.

Does terrorism really work as an argument against Islam? There are so many other factors in play, and factors which are present in non-islamic terrorism too. Robert Pape argues that geopolitical factors are the most important, which is why Islamic countries without those factors weren't drawn to terrorism.

Islam, like any religion, will make people value something greater than humans, which is always going to be a negative, albeit quite a subtle and society-wide negative.

I feel like by using terrorism as an argument we march into an academic debate despite knowing nothing about it.

you only need to listen to the motivations of the terrorists. Is it to difficult to accept that they are religiously motivated when they say it themselves?
