It's amazing how composed and polite he is given the shit people spout at him. Before I lost my religion, I never saw or heard him but I heard a lot about him. People were always shitting on him for being pompous and arrogant. He's one of several voices that helped me transition to being rational, and I was floored when I watched some videos of him for the first time. He's a slouch when it comes to philosophy, but I can't really blame him since he actually does science and spends a lot of time doing science PR.
>>16 We could really use more people like him - artists who talk about rationalism. "The Fence" is almost like praise music for general skepticism and nuance.
>>32 He's one of the few people I am quite sure are genuine in the way they present themselves. He's far from perfect but for that alone, he has my undying respect.
>>48 He's entertaining as fuck. He's got the problem of being just smart enough to wrestle with big ideas but not smart enough to actually get it right most of the time. It's frustrating to watch him be wrong about things because he's not self-aware enough. Like the episode of Bullshit where they basically say that physical shape is 100% due to genetics. Dude, you're fat. That's fine, but don't act like it's the way it has to be. You're fat because of your diet and exercise habits, with a dash of genetics affecting how you metabolize food. He seems like a really good guy with a big heart, but his ego gets in the way of being less wrong and less of an ass than he is.
>>64 Underrated because they don't have that much charisma and aren't physically attractive. Hawking is a fucking testament to willpower though and I'm glad he's as famous as he is, even if it's not got to do with atheism.
>>72 I wish more people knew about the Mythbusters being atheists.
>>117 I want to be mad at you for Sam Harris, but Bertrand Russell is good. The only thing Harris has going for him is that he's articulate enough to communicate points that have been around for a long time. He's completely retarded when it comes to philosophy, and he's got less charisma than that buffoon from The Big Bang Theory.
>>295 He let The InvestiGamer do a guest video about GamerGate a few months ago. It was unabashedly pro-GG in that it was honest about what was happening more or less. I don't think TJ has said a word about GG himself.
>>302 Because while the source of a quote has little if anything to do with its validity, it's polite to attribute it correctly. Not everyone will know someone by name, but may recognize the face. It's also easier to read text in someone's voice if you're also seeing a picture of their face.
>>334 He's entertaining, but he relies far too much on intuition. Having seen the podcasts he's done with Karl Pilkington, it's maddening when Karl is actually right about something, but Ricky dismisses it because it defies his common sense. I enjoy his stuff for entertainment but he's a poor source of wisdom.
>>450 Carlin is good. His "Religion has actually convinced people…" is probably the best overall atheist argument. It gets to the heart of the matter, it's short, and it's easy to understand.

There are a lot of famous atheists that I have a lot of respect for. James Randi has done a lot of work in spreading skepticism. The way that he presents himself, and the way that he explains skepticism to onlookers, he really represents skeptics everywhere very well. Richard Dawkins is very articulate and presents himself very well. I'm not a fan of the idea of these debates that he does, but whatever. And Stephen Hawking is the fucking man. Like, it would have been so easy for him to just give up at any point in his life. And yet still, here he is, not only working hard, but he's working hard to change the world for the better. I have SO much respect for this man.
Anonymous 01/15/15 (Thu) 01:53:52 e501fa No. 831
Richard Dawkins. Why? People have such hatred against him for being open about debating religion, being polite about it while everyone bashes on him. And on top of that, everyone claims that he is "the god of atheists". Just to make fun of him and atheists. It's just so funny when people get so mad that call every atheist a sheep of Dawkins. He is just a man who debates well and has good arguments while also being polite, yet religious people can't resist calling him a douche and us dumb followers (whatever the fuck that means).

I'm kind of torn between Robert Ingersoll and Thomas Paine. Technically, neither were atheists (Agnostic and Deist, respectively) - but both of whom I have little doubt would be Atheists today knowing what we now know, and both of whom were hugely influential to today's Atheist movement. Both were war veterans also, who put their money where their mouth was when endorsing freedom and equal rights - though Ingersoll saw far more fighting and was held in a POW camp after getting capture at (I think) Shiloh. These two men showed that you didn't need no fancy schmancy science to debunk nearly every single religious claim. Just rubbing a few brain cells and the audacity to read the "holy" books for what was actually written in them.
