Here's something I've been thinking about for a long time. I'm not trying to draw parallels between any other oppressed group in the US or world for that matter, but how seriously do people here consider the prejudice against atheist?

I mean, when you really think about it, there's a lot there, just by looking at the US:

>Least trusted by peers.

>Can't run for office.
>Could be used against you in legal battles.
>Can't join certain institutions or groups.
>No one takes your accusations of prejudice seriously.

And that's just a few off the top of my head. I know in some islamic countries, being an atheist is harshly punished.

Right now with Chapel Hill, people are tripping over themselves to find reasons why Atheism is dangerous. It's kind of strange, because for a lot of atheists I know, faith and belief/disbelief make up only a small aspect of any given person.

But what do you guys think? I'm especially curious on what non-white atheists here might have to say. I feel like as a white male, I might be more focused on that, as I tend to only have to deal with atheist related discrimination.

An easy target. Atheists commit the least crime in the world. People don't talk shit about Muslims because they're afraid of getting jihaded.

I'm not sure it's that, considering people will rationalize any reason to say Atheist are bad people.

I think that proves my point.

>how seriously do people here consider the prejudice against atheist?
I know it's out there but it doesn't really bother me that much. If you look at it objectively it's really not that bad and looks like it's only going to get better in the near future.

>Least trusted by peers.

Someone might say they don't trust atheists in general but I find (and admittedly this is just my personal experience) it's usually not hard to get them to trust you if they actually get to know you and see you aren't Satan incarnate. They say, "Alright, maybe Anon is one of the good ones, but I still don't trust those bad atheists that Fox News keeps telling me about, the ones who want to destroy America and steal Christmas."

>Can't run for office.

Sure you can! You just probably won't get elected. This does bother me a little bit and ties back to the not trusting atheists in general thing but fortunately there are candidates who can keep their politics and religion more or less separate so I don't think we're in dire need of an atheist president or anything.

>Could be used against you in legal battles

How so?

>Can't join certain institutions or groups.

>No one takes your accusations of prejudice seriously.
Meh, don't really care.

I mean I get that prejudice against atheists is still a problem, but we're never going to live in a world without idiots. There will always be people who don't like or accept something about you for stupid reasons, but I think we're approaching a world where you can pretty much ignore them and there's nothing they can do about it, which is good enough for me.

I feel like this is more of a thing in America than here in Europe. I don't think there's anyone (maybe some psychotic muslims) who really cares about anyone's lack of belief. I also don't really know why American evangelicans go into such a tailspin about people not believing as they do

 No.2934

Shit tons of Christians think "atheist" means "Satan worshipper."

If you have to express your position to a religious person, the clearest way to do it is to say "I'm not religious." If you use the word atheist, you run the risk of them making crazy assumptions about you.

>Legal battles

Well, this is all from secondhand knowledge (in the US, In the south USA for that matter.), that using someones non-belief against them in court is actually somewhat effective. Child custody cases are a good example.

No one wants a child to end up with a moral-less, godless, atheist.

>>2921

Not really. Islam is demonized and thrown under a bus regardless of what they do. I'd say more people are willing to shit on Islam the more crazy shit they do.

Atheists seem to be viewed negatively by universally everyone. Probably because we don't buy anyone's bullshit. Maybe if we had our own bullshit, people wouldn't care.

SJWs will attack atheism all the time, but I have "never" seen an SJW attack Islam.

Xenophobia and financial interests. In the US south, many people love their "values" and any criticism of it is seen as a personal attack against them, their family, and their dog.

Also a lot of the ministers/paster/preachers here make a shit ton of money. Within 5 miles of my house there are at least 10 churches, and one of them one of the biggest in the country. All the church administrators make 6 figure salaries. The collection plate is a lucrative business.

>Probably because we don't buy anyone's bullshit. Maybe if we had our own bullshit, people wouldn't care.

Pretty much. Go over to /christain/ and there was a topic or two about how atheists are all nihilists and are inherently selfish because they have no higher power to give them morals. Try to argue a secular source of morals they pretty much ignore you as loudly as they can until you leave.

 No.2949

People or the government will continue to look down on atheists because atheists won't suicide bomb everyone who doesn't agree with them, it's that simple.

The SJW crowd also don't to offend anything that's potentially a minority.

>Charlie Hebdo

"But what about the brown people??!?"
>Chapel Hill
"I knew those atheists were terrible."
>Osama
"But ze brown people!"
>Hitchens
"lol fuck that guy"

>>2949

I still don't think that's it. At least, not the main point. Yeah, we're no where near as violent as a demographic, but if you look at history, Atheists were more then likely silenced for holding any dissenting views on religion.

Now you have shit like Anti-theism, the New Atheist movement, the Rational Response Squad (lol), etc etc.

I think it has more to do with Atheists becoming more vocal.

What can I say then? I think we all know, including you the reason on why atheists are looked at lesser people, or controlled by Satan, or people who you don't trust.

You know why, most of the earth's population is religious, and of course this is the reason on why being atheist will inspire less trust in the majority. If atheists would be at least half of the world's population, I don't think religious people would stand a chance in making atheists look like bad people.

The solution to the problem is that you need to live another 100 years and see how much atheists are in the world then, it will probably be more and more normal to be a person with no faith in these ridiculous fairy books, as it should be. I don't really have an answer for you, there are just more religious people on earth than non religious, way more.

confrontation is proof that debate is at least happening in USA.

In Latin America irreligion is still taboo

a man willing to stand up to prejudice for what he believes is a great man

a man standing up to prejudice in defense of a non-belief is just a fool lost in his pride
