On the surface this seems like a silly topic for this board, but it's definitely important shit.

Personally, I don't think I've ever heard of bigotry from Buddhists or Taoists. Hindus, too, seem very positive and tolerant without being pushy. One of the biggest misconceptions of Atheism is that Atheists hate religion inherently. Now, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that while I hate several religions and think the world would be better off without them, I'm not some kind of haterade drinking troll that obsesses with what dicks Christians and Muslims are being, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

and yes, I fully expect to be flooded with "euphoric tip le fedora" shit, and I accept that, just remember that everything on reddit is retarded, including atheism.

pic unrelated but badass

 No.325

Yeah, Buddhism and taoism, while I don't agree with them, have some pretty neat stuff written in them, and I'd have to say they would be my favorite religion as well.

It's not exactly like religious books don't have fun stories written in them either, and I want to begin reading them more often.

buddhist extermists exist as well, I remember them from religion class in school, they are terrorising the muslim minority in some country, tore one of their buildings down with heav building equipment while people were inside praying and some other fucked up shit, they don't mix well with monotheistic religions as far as I know, but this stuff is never talked about because buddhism is mystified here and tibet is presented as a holy country and not as the shithole it actually was before the chinese invaded.
From a purely ideological standpoint, ignoring the supernatural hokus pokus they are one of the better ones, but I really dislike their pessimistic outlook on life. If I were to believe that I ha infinite lifes to live, the last thing I would think about would be the only method to completly kill myself, Nirvana, I'd rather have all that infinte pain thrown at me because there would also be infinite pleasure. And if we take it realistically without reincarnations, buddhist monks really don't accomplish much, they just meditate all day, I'd rather do something productive for society before my time here is over

I've met a couple of Buddhists, one is an extremely self centered and defeatist asshole, and the other is self centered and houses a bland personality with little to no goals.
I know a Muslim girl who struggles with the decision of killing herself or not.
The only Satanists I've ever met is a tranny SJW and a struggling Metalhead Christian.
Competing religions against one another is a waste of time, but if I had to pick any of the former at all… maybe Muslim, due to our similar stance on current events and even relationships, despite for vastly different reasons we hold our opinions.

>the only satanist I've ever met is a tranny SJW and a struggling metalhead christian
Are you talking about biblical satanism, or the satanism that has literally nothing to do with the bible. Personally I like the latter version as it promotes sexuality, being who you are, and just having fun with life.

Out of curiousity as someone not familiar with satanism, does that kind of satanism have a name/label?

Buddhists and Hindus oppress the poor with the idea of reincarnation.
>If I'm good, I'll come back rich. No need to try and improve my station while I'm alive. Certainly no need for revolution. That will get me reincarnated lower for disrupting the natural order.
And Hindus take it further with the caste system.

I dunno about Taoists.

I like Sikhism on the surface. Haven't really looked into it, but I vomit at the concept of revealed truth.

Catholics are kind of okay. I mean, they are making some sort of effort to be progressive and accepting. Plus they are actually accepting of science. They still have a bunch of really regressive ideas, but eh.

LeVayan Satanism is basically atheism with a bunch of rules. Think Atheism+ except a bunch of douchey hedonists instead of SJWs.

Church of Satan (Laveyan Satanism) as I understand it was meant more as a critique of Christianity than anything. It's basically "What if we made a religion that was the opposite of Christianity? What would that look like?" and that it turns out to be more moral than Christianity is the point.

 No.889

>>881
Basically, yeah. It just attracts a lot of…undesirables. I used to have a friend who was part of the Church of Satan., and according to him, a lot of people who are part of that crowd have sort of fallen from that idea. Imagine the "euphoric" kind of atheists. "Holier than thou" sort of people.

I hate every religion because religion is just belief basically. But yes, some people from certain religious are way more nicer than others. Such as buddhists and taoists as you said.

Those eastern religions never hurt anyone.. Bull fucking shit!

Just because you are ignorant of their crimes against humanity doesn't mean they didn't happen.

The Hindus used to practice Sati until the British made them stop.

Sati is when you throw grandma onto grandpa's funeral pyre.

http://adaniel.tripod.com/sati.htm

And then there's that wonderful Caste system. An oppressive social order endorsed by the Gods.

Dig a little and you will discover every religion stomps on human liberty in one way or another.

Hinduism isn't a single religion and every worshipper of a new form was hunted as witches and killed until the texts and beliefs became widespread.

Hindus thought the same against buddhists. And vice versa.

Buddhism nearly destroyed China until taoists had a mass Killing and outlawing of Buddhism. This is why china today has such a strict hold on religions and why it modifies them.

Buddhists themselves have had a lot of violence between each other (mostly Theravada Mahayana and Vajrayana) not to mention the violence of many buddhists against muslims. And the kalachakra of Vajrayana (considered the best by dalai lama) has literature about in the future mass killing people of abrahamic Faiths. Atheism has also caused deaths.

You people just know what Christianity has done due to it's influence in the west.

It was my involvement in Religion that lead me to being an atheist.

I was a devout Catholic, and I believed that the Church was guided by the Holy spirit. Some reading about the history of the Catholic Church pretty much disproves the idea of divine guidance for that organization.

Besides it is impossible to discuss God without talking about the various attributes attached to that God (or Gods) by the various faiths.

The fact that so many horrible things are done by people who are supposedly invested with spiritual authority is great evidence that God isn't there.

We can say that God permits evil people to do evil stuff because of free will,, we can say that God permits disease and random suffering to give us all the opportunity to show courage, charity, and all those other virtues.

But when God sits back and let's someone do terrible things under his auspices.. that's a deal breaker.

I love cargo cults.

They still exist. They are still waiting for "John Frum" to come back and bring them goodies.

A cultist was interviewed about it, and he said that Christians have been waiting for Jesus for thousands of years so he could wait for John Frum a little longer.

I suggest you read "The Golden Bough" which talks about magical beliefs in different cultures.

I'm a former Catholic, so I guess I have a soft spot for them so I am going to point out that while the Catholic Church is indeed wealthy, they aren't nearly as bad as some outfits.

They operate schools, universities, hospitals and a lot of stuff with some real social value. Maybe they could do more. but they do something.

Compare that with the Mormons who are investing their wealth into shopping malls and things that produce a profit.

>Norse Paganism.

Mostly the mythology is the appeal.
tl;dr version: A bunch of OP mary sue alcoholics fuck over everything they meet until eventually the massive armies collective monstrous butthurt rises out of the deep to take revenge. Then it starts over, supposedly.

There's also a bitch who's so blonde she cries golden tears.

Depressingly now it's now being used as a sort of douchebag indicator by idiots to look special while they project their wish-fulfillment fantasies into falsifying 'history' essays and it's infuriating. And although there's not so much divisive whiny bullshit as the shitdick Wiccans, every time one of my asshole peers posts some picture of a mjolnir pendant with "It's not a fashion accessory!" under it I want to vomit.

The new pope is far from OK. He's pro terrorism (but he'll never admit it).
In regards to the Charlie Hebdo killings, he said "well, if you make fun of my mother, a punch awaits you". He is, all in the same analogy, implying that
>pre-meditated mass murder is the same thing, or close enough to, a single heat of the moment punch
>it's perfectly OK/understandable to murder 12 people in cold blood for saying things you don't like
>faith is a good enough reason to excuse, even partially, the most barbaric and unforgivable of behaviors
It's about what I expected from a Catholic figurehead though.

I agree, but I feel like he's more or less covering his own ass with that decision.
He knows that Islam will breed more of this trash, like it always does, so there's probably an element of fear behind the appearance that he's just sticking up for the sky daddy fan club. He is, but I think it's the fear that's led him to this more than anything else. Because if he outright said "yeah fuck those writers and people with freedom" the rest of his hypocrisies would be all over the press. He still looks like and is a cunt, but the degree of exposed cunt is still fairly slim with that attitude.

Not really.

Lots of non-catholics go to catholic schools in areas where public schools are failing, and catholic universities and hospitals serves all sorts of people.

Since vocations for the clergy have been in free-fall for decades there are fewer and fewer priests in these places.

I used to be a devout Catholic, and Catholics just aren't evangelical,, they don't turn up on street corners shouting at people or go door to door with pamphlets.

Anybody who subscribes to a belief or set of thoughts about how the world works or should work has it's share of assholes.

I would like to convert to shintoism, if the Japanese would accept me. Not Buddhism which I know enough about to dislike, but the body of optimistic Japanese folklore that says there are fox women I might meet and fuck if I get lucky and feed a starving baby fox.

You know, the touhou religon where every god would be a miko, loli or milf. Of course, I'd never truly believe all the superstition, (my experiences as an ex-Christian prevent that), but It'd be fun to learn the customs, visit mountain shrines, and talk to people who live in fantasy land.

In 1992 that was a problem, but since then the Japanese have let Mongolian sumo wrestlers have the rank of yokozuno (highest champion.). As for Shinto I've gotten mixed messages on the web. Some people choose to do the rituals at home in America, (like this guy https://thetwistedrope.wordpress.com/shintoism/shinto-starter-guide/ ) and as a tourist the Japanese never looked at me funny for visiting a shrine.

(Becoming a priest or miko might be harder, but then again that probably just depends on whether you could find someone willing to take you on. My supposition is you might get a job in rural areas with run-down shrines where the old people can't find young ones to care for the "temple," and there it might be easy to befriend someone who would let you do it. That is…provided that you wanted the extra responsibilities of raking leaves, cleaning stuff, laying out food for the bugs to devour, dancing and playing instruments, and generally being fine entertainment for any invisible things out there.)

I like the eastern religions quite a bit for the aesthetic. They tend to place a lot of emphasis on human experience with supernatural spiritualism as more of a supplement. Western fret over inane things like when to do communion and taking the bible literally.
Also, I plenty of reason to hate western religion personally but I have no connection with eastern religion.
