The historical context thing wouldn't be an issue if people didn't still tout these books as what we should base our morality on.

If someone says "We must follow the Bible. It's the word of God." The fact that the Bible openly condones slavery is automatically a strike against it. The historical context no longer matters because people want to continue applying its laws and morality TODAY.

So do various other outlets. I don't believe the fact that religion has helped some people through tough times means that it shouldn't be critiqued.

There's plenty of secular charities. In another point you said that famous scientists were religious. Many scientists alive today are atheists. Science continues making the world better. Does that mean that religions shouldn't be allowed to criticize atheists because atheist scientists make the world a better place?

Also it's worth noting that the Catholic Church is one of the most wealthy institutions on Earth. If you're trying to impress me with that number, it's worth noting that place has dosh to burn.

Well at least this one was born after the 1600s. Now comes the part where you explain how a man who's famous for working in medicine somehow means that religion can't be criticized.

These people were all great men. They made discoveries and works that people continue to build on but they were just that, men.

The thing about science is that it doesn't matter who makes the discovery. If humanity somehow nuked itself out of existence and another species evolved the level of intelligence we had, there's nothing necessarily stopping that species from making the exact same discoveries as we did.

Evolution would remain the same. The Earth would still be the 3rd planet from the sun. Planets will still have elliptical orbits. Light would still be the fastest thing in the universe. And so on.

It's not like religion where there likely won't be another Jesus or Muhammad or Horace or any God we dreamed of if mankind starts again. Though there might be similar gods, every Abrahamic faith and Eastern religion likely would not exist.

Your own inane ramblings have led me on a tangent in which I give yet another criticism of religion. Congratulations, you've done the opposite of what you set out to accomplish.

Why? Your reasons were petty at best. Religion does some good sure but here's a challenge for you: Name one good thing religion does that has no secular alternative.

As far as bad things religions do that don't have secular roots, I can name several.

They're ideas. Concept. Stories. Morals. Etc. All of which are well open to scrutiny from others. What kind of excuse is "be tolerant of everyone's beliefs" if not from someone with shitty beliefs

No, these were specific individuals. Just because Newton was strongly religious (but very heretical) doesn't mean that he wouldn't have contributed to physics. Was he inspired by religion or the universe we live in conflating that with religion? It could be argued if he didn't waste so much time with deciphering the bible we would have flying cars by now (joke).

So what? The Catholic church by forcing bans on stem cell research have done more harm than all the money they ever gave to starving children. Also as far as charity is concerned:

research > poor people

Poor people come and go, research accumulates. Plus research will help us develop cheaper means to feed the poor as it has.

Stop appropriating the works of some Christians as the direct product of Christianity. Sure they may have been motivated to finding god with science but the methodology is never outlined by religion and is a product of irreligion.

I find it useful to tell religious people Albert Einstein didn't believe in a personal God and was either Atheist, Agnostic or Deitist. In fact most of the physicists in the last half century seem to have been atheists. People have moved on.

It's fun retort to this claim by pointing at people they respect like Albert Einstein or Thomas Jefferson and say, "You'd agree this man was smarter and better read than us, and did great things right? Well that man did not believe in your religious dogma. Don't you think there might be a reason for that? Thomas Jefferson even cut the miracles out of his bible. Wouldn't you want to investigate his point of view?"

Of course, they usually just retort, "I don't get how someone that smart can be so dumb. But Thomas Jefferson definitely went to hell for cutting up the bible."
