You know if this wasn't by Powerman 5000 and didn't quite have their style I would have probably completely dismissed this as edgelord music.

Usually I don't listen to atheist music because it can often be as edgy as activist music.

I've been in Korea and had websites for adultery, porn, or erotic manga blockaded. If I return I don't want to live without the convenience of a free vpn like Hola, as your post shows. Virtual machines are too technical for me to set up and trust, and I'm thinking of eventually buying a cheap netbook just so I can install Hola and that netbook can be part of the botnet for all I care.

Not a song overtly about atheism or religion. It does deal with existentialist themes though and I think those of us that don't believe in divinely ordained purpose resonate with these thoughts more than those that do.

Of note that James Mercer, the songwriter, is an outspoken atheist.

>I never really hated the one true God but the God of the people I hated

That may even be in this very song for all I remember. That's clearly not atheistic. I remember Manson stating his theism, too, the guy is not an atheist and most likely never was.

Sorry.

>"Adam: 'You're not God-fearing, but you don't the devil either'. MM: 'I don't believe in either'.""

>I never really hated the one true God but the God of the people I hated

That isn't referring to some deity btw. Manson views everyone as their own god. Probably in the existentialist sense that we create our own reality.

From his autobiography:

>I believe I am God. I believe everyone is their own God.

Wouldn't work. He may have changed his mind but I dinstinctly remember him saying he wasn't an atheist in an interview.

I've read his autobiography, but he doesn't use "God" the usual way here.

>Wouldn't work.

Yes it does, since god is a made up term anyway we can use it to define whatever we want.

>He may have changed his mind but I dinstinctly remember him saying he wasn't an atheist in an interview.

Just like how he doesn't use the word god conventionally he might've done the same here. "I'm not an Atheist" could mean he doesn't believe there is no god which makes him agnostic by that paradigm and atheist given the conventional paradigm of lacking belief. Everything seems to suggest he's not a theist one way or another in the conventional sense of the word.

>Yes it does, since god is a made up term anyway we can use it to define whatever we want.

But that's not the definition of God you have on this board, for instance. When you say "God", you don't mean "my left sock", even if I decide that this is what God is to me now.

>Everything seems to suggest he's not a theist one way or another in the conventional sense of the word.

Possibly. Either way, I don't see how Manson's personal creed matters, much like any music (ab)used for political purposes doesn't have an argument because of the music.

I think Manson actually said something like "God is music", if I recall correctly. I believe something not too far from it, more like His voice rather than Him directly. Just came to my head.

Because in debate we don't have artistic license. We need to be sure our audience gets what we're saying unlike in music where you may want only a select few to get what you're saying or none at all while the others just enjoy the tune.

He did.

This assumes that Manson assumed he didn't mean "God" by using the word "God", which I wouldn't assume. In the song OP posted, it's pretty clearly the common definition of the word and nothing using poetic license.

>I'm not a slave to a God that doesn't exist

Seems pretty basic to me, on equal grounds with a chan post saying the same. No poetic license here.

I understand In Bloom. Nirvana was my first religion when I was a teen, Cobain was my Christ.

So we're to assume he's using the word conventionally? Marilyn Manson? Being conventional? Pls. Manson before Eat Me, Drink me had some deep shit. Yeah he's edgy but only with an sharp edge can you slice into the meat of it.

>I'm not a slave to a God that doesn't exist

He can use different definitions of the same word in the same song. His true god is likely the self. When I try to assemble the thoughts he's given me it seems what he's getting at is we live in a world where he sees only us as gods but we impose these make believe gods upon ourselves. Look how human the gods are in form. Even the Bible, we're all made in god's image.

This is called the Fight Song, he's more than hinting at there being a conflict. Here a conflict of views. How he views god vs how society views god.

>So we're to assume he's using the word conventionally? Marilyn Manson? Being conventional? Pls.

In those lyrics I quoted, it's pretty obvious, yes.

>I'm not a slave to a God that doesn't exist

Obviously he's not talking about his own personal views of what God is here.

> Even the Bible, we're all made in god's image.

Yeah, but most assume it means "physical, visible image" when in reality it has more to do with consciousness and the soul than the body. It doesn't mean God looks like a human being, unless you're thinking of the Second Person, unless you assume evolution is designed to always end up with a humanoid in the end (not an impossible argument but tricky).

>"I'm not a slave to a god that doesn't exist" is thought to be inspired from a passage by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche which states "the only excuse for God is that he doesn't exist."

Just listened to "God Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal flats, and realized there will never be a country song that even implies there's no God.
