New to this board and want to know the rules? Have a question for atheists? Then you should probably read the FAQ (Updated: 3/19/15). It's not necessary, but don't be surprised if people ignore you if you don't elaborate further on a question already answered here, or the moderator does something you didn't expect.

hey /atheists/,

i've got to ask, how do you respond to the claims of

-colton burpo (heaven is for real) [also how akiane saw jesus and it matched burpo's vision]

-angelica zambrano (saw hell)

-howard storm

-mary k baxter

-why do we exist in the first place and how could the big bang have occured without god?

-how do we get convincing accounts of demonic possesion in addition to Near Death Experiences? (there are claims of people speaking foreign languages fluently that they didnt know before being possessed)

i'd like to believe chrisitianity is all falsehoods since ive already lost loved ones but i can't convince myself 100% and i know that what i think won't change facts

f545fc No.7032

I wonder, aside from seeking a reaction does statuefag seriously believe in all the things he spouts about?

1. Hallucinations of a dying mind

2. Theres no proof we need God for anything

3. Demon possession always was just mental illness

Complete falsifications at best and complete delusion at worse.

>-why do we exist in the first place and how could the big bang have occured without god?

It's pretty simple, when a pregnant woman gives birth to a child, it's the woman's body doing what it does, god has no distinction.

>-how do we get convincing accounts of demonic possesion in addition to Near Death Experiences?

>Convincing

No they aren't.

>there are claims of people speaking foreign languages fluently that they didnt know before being possessed

No, there aren't.

>i'd like to believe chrisitianity is all falsehoods

There's your first mistake, you shouldn't "want" to believe that something is true or false, you should just believe what has been shown to be true.

>since ive already lost loved ones

Call the wahmbulance because this has happened to just about everybody. Who gives a fuck? Death is an inevitable part of life, and if you're not prepared for it, it will affect your life.

>but i can't convince myself 100% and i know that what i think won't change facts

This goes both ways, except that science has had a much better track record of finding the truth than an ancient book used to manipulate people.

>Hey /atheists/ how do you respond to the unfounded claims made by people who used said claims to make money and garner attention to themselves, or were made by impressionable children?

Gee anon, it's not like anyone would lie, right?

5fed8f No.7039

>>7038

that's an awful lot of liars with pretty consistent visions at least from the stories i've found, i've not seen any cases of people losing religion or converting away from christianity because of them

We said this kind of hearsay testimony is useless and your counter is "it may be useless, but theres a lot of this kind of testimony." Argument ad populum fail.

>this thread again

It all started when I pissed all over people at /christian/ and proved their "evidence" wrong and not credible, and instead of being reasonable they started repeating themselves again and again and used appeals to popularity to win, since I saw it was hopeless to argue with them I left the thread. They thought having the last word is winning, so they celebrated like some clowns.

Then our dear statuefag thinking he had anything worthy to say came on /atheism/, making a thread with the same arguments he was beaten before, asking us to believe that his god is real because there are statues crying, and other stupid bullshit.

Apparently, he got BTFO in that thread too. But no, it wasn't enough, you just had to make ANOTHER thread.

THIS, this is what I call maximum assblast.

calm down man i was just asking for oppinions on things that seem pretty one-sided and wanted to hear what other explanations there might be

i don't understand why your upset either since you did the same thing by going onto /christian/ and asking a question

Don't mind the hostility. Basically there's a persistent guy around here who we nicknamed statuefag. The guy is so persistent there was once a 300+ post thread of him arguing with us, and he's been around for a while. So people are a bit weary of him on that regard. Personally I think he left.

>why do we exist in the first place and how could the big bang have occurred without god?

How do you know that a god, or even the christian god made the universe? Read the first page of Genesis and tell me how that shit makes sense compared to what science has taught us. Genesis seems to imply that the earth is flat even. Keep in mind that it's perfectly fine to be what some call an "agnostic atheist".

>>7039

There are also a lot of people who claim they woke up to a ghost or alien strangling them. Visions can have common themes, and sleep paralysis is a huge contributing factor to many of these visions.

c4283d No.7049

>Don't mind the hostility

You will eat your own words when OP will start using appeal to emotions and to popularity just like statuefag did, because he is statuefag.

>>7049

It's understandable, but keep in mind we get a lot of christian posters who come here and ask similar questions. Of coarse now that you said he will, they'll probably refrain.

I have family who ate a fish they caught. Two of them had nightmares that night where they couldn't move and both of them blames that species of fish. Superstision or science you can decide, but at least they didn't blame something spiritual for their nightmares as many are prone to do.

b8264c No.7053

>-colton burpo (heaven is for real) [also how akiane saw jesus and it matched burpo's vision]

>and all the others you mentioned

When people are dying/having a near death experience, their mind can go into panic mode and do whatever they can to attempt to calm the body down. That's exactly what the Heaven is for Real kid went through as according to even the christians themselves, he didn't actually die but was just on death's door.

It's no more "proof of God" than if someone were to claim to have visited Valhalla.

>-why do we exist in the first place and how could the big bang have occured without god?

Why do we exist? We're one of many results of a biological phenomenon called evolution. Our evolutionary ancestors were successful and our species was/is also successful thanks to the ability to use tools (opposable thumbs), advanced cognitive abilities (short and long term memories. Able to plan for the future), and innate social tendencies (able to work together and form an orderly society)

How could the big bang have occurred without God? I would ask why one needs God in the first place at all. I don't know what came before the big bang but I'm going to need more than just semantics and arguments from ignorance that theists give out to say "God".

>-how do we get convincing accounts of demonic possesion in addition to Near Death Experiences?

Mental illness and good acting.

>(there are claims of people speaking foreign languages fluently that they didnt know before being possessed)

Read this over with me again

>there

>are

>claims

Multa bene. Now think critically about that.

953955 No.7059

1. Claims are just that. I feel there's no gods. I've searched 15 years at first debating atheists because I thought I believed in a god but a few years of debating, I realized atheists do have a more reasoned approach. I've pretty much seen every claim for a god or gods by now and I'm not convinced and never was but at one time, I did have "faith", aka, wanting to believe. But belief isn't a choice. You can pretend to believe but that's not true belief or faith.

2. No one knows why but I say it's up to you to answer that for your own self. The big bang? It just is and always was, it's omnipotent, just like gods. Okay, I can't really say that because I don't know. I'm not willing to make something up for what created what created us, like some theists do.

3. People have also been accounted to do this after a coma or amnesia. Like a lot of things, there's secular sides to it also.

>people who saw heaven/hell

Your brain releases DMT when you're dying and you trip balls instead of suffer in lucid agony (when it works properly).

>why [fact about the universe, not an action by a being with intent]

The question is nonsensical, same as "who is the universe?"

>demonic possessions et al

Hallucinations due to numerous disorders or drugs, not to mention mass delusions and other documented phenomena relating to confirmation bias.
