New to this board and want to know the rules? Have a question for atheists? Then you should probably read the FAQ (Updated: 3/19/15). It's not necessary, but don't be surprised if people ignore you if you don't elaborate further on a question already answered here, or the moderator does something you didn't expect.

Is a person who inherits a significant amount of money obligated to repay the debt to society? That is the question.

From a personal standpoint, I received several thousand dollars from my grandmother when she died and spent six months traveling through the Pacific Rim, squandering that inheritance on wasteful trips and travel blunders. At the time I thought it was worth it for me, but later when I thought about working families I realized I it was not fair to them.

I also met a series of other young travellers who had inherited, and people who had inherited positions at the companies of their parents. Some of them never needed to work if they did not want to. But many felt entitled to the money they had received through good fortune of the universe, and treated their possessions as a God-given right.

In the same vein I wonder if one of us stood in the face of death in our later years as a millionaire and was offered a chance to extend his life through a procedure by a year or two for a million dollars, whether that life would be worth the expense when the money could go toward making more people happy.

Pic unrelated.

I'm a poorfag and I'd say that's fair. It's your money. You're not obligated to do shit for anyone. Your shit belongs to you.

Everyone, rich and poor, are morally obligated to at least try to make the world a better place. Having more resources to better the world only makes you more capable, but not more obligated. It is also important to realize that immorality and ammorality are not the same thing. By not doing something moral you are not always automatically being immoral by default. It is silly to feel guilty that you have the resources to do as you please because others do not, because if they had money like you they'd spend it things they'd enjoy too. What is the point of life if you can't enjoy it? It is also silly to feel entitled to something just because you have it. Some people are lucky and obtain great things while having to do very little. Some are so unlucky their entire existence is a horror show. It's important that the lucky ones stay humble, and recognize what else the cards of fate could've easily dealt them.

Enjoy your life, because you should. Just remember to give back your fellow humans, because we, like you, all would like to enjoy our lives. All people are human just like everyone else, no matter how much material wealth they have.

Is this money from a Swiss bank acccount? No, then hasn't it been taxed already?

2e5b87 No.8032

I want to say that first, it's not my opinion, I think this is the truth. It's your money and you should do what you want with it, and no one should be able to think they deserve a piece of it.

You do not have an obligation to repay society more than it is needed, sure pay your taxes and all that, but you don't need to give anything extra just because you are wealthy. Otherwise, everyone should be rich by that type of thinking, that you naturally owe something to them. And not everyone deserves to be rich.

There are people out there that are fucking scum, and deserve nothing, who are they to think you owe something to them? If I were you I'd only give big sums of money to my family, or my friends who were kind to me and supported me. And even if you got friends who weren't really good friends, they don't necessarily deserve your money.

I'm very poor, seriously, and I think that when I'm not an asshole on the internet, I'm a decent human being in real life. Does that mean that I deserve half of Bill Gates's money? Did I create a product that was sold to millions of people, or did he do it? What did I do to deserve that?

I honestly think that all people who think that they automatically deserve money from rich people, are horrible people. Those are the people who go and cry at wall street at the people who have more money than them. I don't like this thinking that everyone is equal and everyone deserves something. Sure, Maria from Mexico may be cleaning toilets all day, more disgusting than what an artist did to make 500k dollars, but Maria didn't make a product that's consumed by millions of people, only one person cares if the toilet is clean, her employer. Meanwhile thousands of other people care about the artist's work. No one is holding down either the artist or Maria to stay at the same jobs forever, they can do whatever they want, if they are good at it.

You are a good person if you give money and support to people who really need it, and are good human beings. But in order for you to know that those people aren't psychopaths, retarded, crazy, or future criminals, you need to know them personally, if you are gonna give big sums of money to them.

Sure OP, you got super lucky, you basically got cash that most people in China or India get in decades of hard work, but does that mean that you should go to India and hand out all the money to everyone there, and then you would live badly? I say enjoy your money, and relaxing life, as everyone sane would want to enjoy a relaxed and worry free life, this is at least my purpose in life.

I am poor, but if I will get rich in some decades, I wouldn't want some entitled douchebags to ask me to give money to them for nothing, for all the work that I did, even if it wasn't a lot or it wasn't hard. It's my life, my money, and I don't need to hand it out to everyone. I fucking hate people like that.

Give up, statuefag. It's obvious when it's you.

Obligations are figments of our imaginations, and just like I can think that I'm obligated I can think that I am not so therefore I choose not to be for the sake of convenience. So you're only obligated if you chose to chain yourself down like that.
