New to this board and want to know the rules? Have a question for atheists? Then you should probably read the FAQ (Updated: 3/19/15). It's not necessary, but don't be surprised if people ignore you if you don't elaborate further on a question already answered here, or the moderator does something you didn't expect.

>After converting to Christianity and giving all his possessions to the poor, he committed suicide.

I see this as a short-coming of Christianity; it is noble to treat others as well as yourself, but consistently elevating them above you leads to "suicide."

>slave morality

Strange guy. On one hand brilliant, figuring out the Price equation and all, on the other hand weak.

>Turn the other cheek

>Be a pushover

>Let everyone step over you

This is now considered "being mature" in western societies.

It's atheists trying to out-moralise Christian culture that led to this stupidity and degeneracy.

Comeon guys, this is a bit edgy. Theres nothing wrong with being good to others. I know if I wasn't a broke ass neet I'd give like 30% of my earned money to my friends and people who needed it.

nice story OP. I am actually equally surprised for the strong mathematical treatment this guy gave to biology in his work. One would assume that sciences like biology are not as hard as physics, and then you see this.

It's a misfortune that Christianity stopped him from continuing doing science. As >>8972 said, it's a misfortune he wasn't intelligent enough to reason that his spooky events that led them to religious fanaticism could as well have been mere coincidences. This is one of the first things you should learn as a scientist when studying statistical inference

but remember guise!

the whole point of Christianity is to bash self-loving behaviour all your life and serve a highly hierarchical group of societal power Jebus and your neighbor, so you can live an eternal afterlife of hedonism and avoid what you don't like!

SELFISHNESS SO RONGG!!!

MINDLESS RANDOM ACTION THAT HAPPENS TO BENEFIT SOMEONE ELSE (what altruism actually means) IS SO GOOD!!!

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

More like:

>most born into Christian family

>slave morality instilled from young age

>realize no evidence for mystical beliefs

>give up faith in Jebus

>slave morality still retained

Secular Humanism in a nutshell, not to be confused with pure atheism.

Rand had many good points, moreso than one can write her off as broken clock as many have tried. My only qualm with her was objective morality (amongst a few minor things here and there). But there was nothing wrong with her attempting it.

Anyway:

Reciprocity >> altruism

I agree but christianity has idea that giving all you possessions to others and sacrifice yourself is the most noble thing.(Buddhism has similar ideas.)

But neglecting yourself makes you unhappy in the long run. People will exploid you if you always say "yes". Your time and energy is limited but the problems of the world are not.

You have to find a proper ballance.

>if

Yeah, that's what they all say. But when most people do get more money they suddenly find a lot more things to spend it on then they ever thought about before.

>>8980

>One would assume that sciences like biology are not as hard as physics

Really? For me it was always the opposite in school.

>it's a misfortune he wasn't intelligent enough to reason that his spooky events that led them to religious fanaticism could as well have been mere coincidences

Yeah, I'd have to read more about his conversion to really draw any conclustions, but the whole "too many coincidences in his own life" thing sounds reminiscent of a conspiracy nut.

>Yeah, I'd have to read more about his conversion to really draw any conclustions, but the whole "too many coincidences in his own life" thing sounds reminiscent of a conspiracy nut.

I found a couple paragraphs that explain it more. He married a Catholic and they fought over religion until they divorced, and at the same time he happened to be involved in the background of a lot of scientific discoveries. When he discovered the altruistic equation he became convinced God was sending him messages, so he gradually gave up science to help the poor. Then when he was bankrupt God sent him a message to start a family, but he had already lost faith in his ability to reinvent himself, so he killed himself by stabbing himself in the back of the neck with a pair of scissors.

I've always found all the debate about morality to be a bit pointless, at least this high concept meta-ethics philosophy stuff. Because remember lads, altruism among blood relatives is a response to natural selection. The morality that will lead people to spread their genes the most will become dominate. Doesn't matter if objectivism, or master morality is more philosophically stratifying, you can't fight your genes.

What is impossible to do because it would be fighting your genes?
