I think an evolutionary explanation works. Unconstrained reproduction maximizes the popularity of religions as memes, specially in uneducated societies. I don't think it is coincidence that many religious groups are so obsessed with controlling sex, and banning contraception and abortion.
Conservatism, religion, ignorance and a total disregard for the problems of overpopulation correlate with one another. Religious people are comparatively more lustful and have many children like fucking beasts because what their sexually-obsessed religions do is actually condone unlimited sex under special "traditionalist" circumstance. They don't tell you to be sensitive about the human footprint on Earth and the quality of life of already living beings. There's no ethical consideration for reproduction within marriage as long as you don't abort mindless proto-humans of the complexity of unicellular life, on the grounds that these proto-humans posses a supernatural soul they cannot define, let alone demonstrate. It's all very selfish. Religions can hardly survive without indoctrination of vulnerable young minds. For the priesthood to survive it is necessary that their followers have many kids. Have you ever seen a priest blaming poor couples for worsening the opportunities and quality of life of their children for every new kid they have??? No one else but parents, their ignorance and a bit of instinctive sexual impulse are responsible for the quality of life of their kids. I know the rich have no special right to reproduce, and feel no more sexual desire than the average of humans, but that is not an excuse for the suffering of new people when you are in charge for making them or not.
On the other hand atheism, agnosticism and irreligion are correlated with developed, educated societies. They don't have lots of offspring because they live longer, their few children have greater chances to survive so you don't need as many tries. Also they take part of more creative and intellectual activities, usually realize that what will make the world a better place is not passing your genes but passing your education; and finally have access and information to contraceptives, all these making sex a form of optional recreation.
