New to this board and want to know the rules? Have a question for atheists? Then you should probably read the FAQ (Updated: 3/19/15). It's not necessary, but don't be surprised if people ignore you if you don't elaborate further on a question already answered here, or the moderator does something you didn't expect.

Do you frequently tell others you're atheist? How do you view theism? How do you deal with it? Ever had any friction with religious people?

9a6a2e No.9219

I personally have no trouble telling friends if it comes up, never had a problem. But I do avoid it with people I don't really know, because I really have no interest in discussing it. Example: someone talks about God, I'll probably just say "sure, whatever". If it's a friend, I'll just say I don't believe in that and things are fine.

I can respect people believing in a God, but I find it kind of nonsense. People usually justify it with questions no one can answer. Were it any other topic with the basic premises (I don't know X, so Y is definitely possible!), people would see that as a lazy, dumb answer. When it comes to religion, people don't do that and justify it with faith. I guess that's what faith is, but I don't get why we have such a leap of faith in this topic alone.

I don't mind saying, I find it retarded but that's just since I view it as adults who believe in made up stories.

I don't mind most of them, I am only really vocal online and that is just to be autistic.

Nope

Long as they don't try to shove their shit down my throat, I couldn't care less for people's superstitions.

It's not really something I have trouble dealing with

My muslim mother, while now accepting of my atheism, wasn't too thrilled at first. No beheading or anything, she was just a bit upset. My grandfather too is quite religious, and while he still doesn't know I'm an atheist, I was pretty baffled at some of the things he said (not violent or anything, but shit you would expect an American conservative christian to say except replace christian with muslim).

Sorry, but unless you live in the Bible Belt or Saudi Arabia, being a nihilistic atheist no longer makes you cool and edgy.

I don't talk about it. My friends are atheists and people in my family that are half-assed Christians don't care about my lack of faith.

My wife doesn't know that I'm an atheist and would divorce the shit out of me, so I wait a very long time to tell people. I have my inner circle that i can trust that knows and the internet. I need to keep it this way for fear of losing my wife and having to do a custody arrangement with my daughter. I refuse to put her through it; maybe in 15 years…

>implying people care about being cool

>implying more than a minority of atheists are nihilistic

You have to care about it, though. We were a secular nation and now we print "in god we trust" on our money. That doesn't mean anything to you?

Also,

How will you influence your daughter to become an atheist?

Who said anything about nihilism at all?

>Still using paper money

And no I don't really care about it any more than someone wishing me Merry Christmas.

I keep it to myself unless it's relevant to the topic at hand. I've told a few people. One didn't care and took the opportunity to express his beliefs and we politely disagreed. The others gave me weird looks and slowly distanced themselves from me. The latter group was entirely from New England.

I literally never just bring it up. I only told my family to correct them when they identified by as religious. I'd do the same with other people, but that's never happened. I look at it like racism. Why would I tell someone I'm not racist? I'll definitely object if they say I am though, and if we're talking about race relations, I'll take that step it if it feels like people are beating around the bush.

He should make sure she has access to stuff that encourages her to think critically and he should prompt her to do so as well. Whether or not someone is religious is affected by personality though, so she may just not be bothered to think about that kind of thing and go with the convenience of a prepackaged worldview. In my experience with theists this is the vast majority of cases. Also, women and girls tend to be more religious than men and boys. Just so he knows it might be difficult.

Polite sage for samefagging.

I rarely tell people about it, but I've unexpectedly hung out with some religious people lately and they were pretty laid back - very much unlike the stereotypical catholic (self-righteous and conservative, at least in my mind).

>I look at it like racism. Why would I tell someone I'm not racist?

That's quite different, but I get your point.
