It's not a deterrent, it's an advantage. It's a get out of hell card and the right way to be. You try to use logic and reason and stuff but it doesn't work. and this is exactly what is wrong with religious pseudo-morality. If god commands Hebrews to slaughter the other tribes then it's OK. If the Pope says the holy spirit revealed to him the need to attack the Muslims in Jerusalem then the Crusades are OK. Not only it stays dogmatic about evil practices that the religion considers good (it's coerced moral relativism), but it also requires theists to adopt prejudice about the morality of atheists.

The relationship between religion and morality is a total lie. You believe it because it makes you feel your religion is good to you. Your stupid account of reality doesn't explain why other religions like Paganism, Hellenism and Eastern religions don't say a fuck about ethics coming from god. Also, ethics, the philosophical study of morality, runs completely independent from theism. Only the theists agree that god is important for ethics. Classical Greek ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, rational egoism are just some of the completely secular moral systems that you would have to study about if you wanted to be a moral philosopher.
