You don't own the land you live on when you buy it, you own the rights to live there and the housing, property, etc. that comes with it.

You're paying for the right to be there, for the right to do what you want (within legal bounds) on the land. That's why law is still enforced on the property and it's inhabitants, because it's still within the state's control.
