I had to wait for 9 hours a couple months ago. I started a new medication and had an adverse reaction, so I frantically drove myself to the ER. I was shaking, my heart was pounding hard but abnormally slow, my blood pressure was through the roof and I couldn't retain any fluids. My tongue was like sandpaper even though I was drinking two bottles of water an hour. The nurse assumed I was just having a panic attack. Everyone was pretty condescending about the whole thing, despite the fact that I know what anxiety and panic attacks actually feel like, and it's not that. By the time I actually got seen by a doctor, the symptoms had began to subside, so the doctor diagnosed it as a panic attack, gave me a single 5mg Valium and told me to go home.

But hey, if I collapsed on the floor, at least I was at a hospital. It was annoying, but the concept of dying alone in my bedroom was far worse.

Any night in the ER is incomplete without loonies and idiots. The other people? Some poor guy that had to bring his teenage daughter in, because she swallowed a dozen or two Panadol in a "suicide attempt". Parents bringing in their baby because it has a sniffle, then going home when they realise the wait is going to be at least 3 hours, even as a high priority case. Some bogan woman methed out, screaming and wandering around the wards until they restrained her. What a night…

The other symptoms I was/am experiencing are all par for the course with my disease though so not as worrying. If you actually have a life threatening emergency, you are most likely fucked and beyond help. They are just as likely to kill you as they are to help you and medical mispractice is HUGE in this country.

Your best insurance against coming into contact with these idiots is to maintain your health as best as possible. I've already decided that if/when I get life threatingly sick, I will just accept my fate and die at home. Funnily enough, this is what many doctors decide for themselves, having seen the horrors of their own work.

The first time I went there to do job searching on the computers, I was offered a computer in once of the offices, I went in there and was forgotten about. I did fuckall. Here's what you do, m8. Go to a clinic to see a GP, tell him you're suffering from depression, talk about it for a bit then say you need a medical certificate, he'll write one up then you just hand it in to Centrelink and you'll be exempt from WFD. But know the medical certs given are just for a certain amount of time, the GP I was with a few months ago only gave me certs that were valid for 3 weeks, so every 3rd week I had to go get another signed from him. So I had a job interview on Thursday and took the attitude that if I get it, I get it and if I don't, what do I give a fuck, I can go home and play vidya, seemed a good way to reduce the anxiety. Anyway, I got the job (labouring) and I start monday so no more sitting around playing vidya and eating parmas for me I guess, least not till the weekend.
