Update: we're now quite firmly back in the top 50 and our user count has increased significantly. However this topic still warrants discussion, for the sake of both /aus/ and 8ch's future.

We've left the top 50 and our current user count is at 30.

I know it's probably pointless asking this because they're already gone, but where is everyone going and why?

I'm personally assuming everyone is slowly leaving due to the constant problems with site stability but I'd like to hear it from you guys, maybe there's something else I'm missing.

Note that this question applies to the site in general and /aus/ in particular. Is the dream dead?

Wish I knew, boss. I noticed this too. All these claims of infiltration, D&C faggotry and the general decline of the chan as a whole, things aren't looking so good. The dream is dying at least.

Probably doesn't help that this continent is happening repellant, we don't have happenings like the rest of the world does. I think we've actually done exceptionally well to stay on the front page for so long, not many countries have done that. The big surge was when we made tv, we'll probably grow again whenever something actually happens here.

/sp/artan here

I used to post here frequently but I mostly lurk now

/sp/ has completely migrated to 76chan.org as of now after our board was rendered unusable by the index not updating for weeks at a time. I don't know if we will be back.

I know the failed infinity never migration, the crippling problems with the site and the genetic dud withdrawing to irc have disillusioned a lot of people on most boards and the uncertainty of 8chan's future doesn't help that.

 No.38694

I sometimes take a break from this board for a few days when the cp spam gets bad. I guess some other users stay away for good.

Do you think the migration to infinity will cut down on the spam? I can't really imagine how it could, but I don't know if they're planning some clever shit.

>>38694

>Do you think the migration to infinity will cut down on the spam?

See, I'm kind of doubtful about that. iirc some of the new touted features in Infinity are the ability to:

1. Block posts containing certain keywords/phrases

2. Block images based on their MD5 hash

So far the spammers have shown a decent amount of adaptability, such as determining the time of day when janitors are least active or keeping an eye on their spam-posts and reposting them right after they're deleted because they know that we won't be paying attention for a while after cleaning the board. If I was to start blocking images based on MD5 hashes, it wouldn't be particularly difficult for them to just start making all their posts with new images that have new hashes (yet look identical to ones used before). And I'm sure they'd find some way around phrase blocking, after all, there's only a few billion different permutations of 'find the CP forum here' that they could use…

As for enabling captcha…Janitor 1 says we had our first CP spam post in over a week today. I get the impression that they are quite happy manually filling in captchas, so it doesn't really do much other than slightly inconvenience them.

In short, I don't have much optimism for Infinity to cut down on spam.

>>38690

The server stability appears better at the moment because the servers have just been restarted due to the failed migration. Stability always seems better after a server restart. From what I understand, the main problem is due to excessive I/O write issues, with the number of disk writes constantly building up with each page load until the whole server essentially shits itself and everything takes forever. Give it a few days and we'll be back where we started.

>>38691

Do you know how I might be able to get in touch with the admin on 76chan? If Infinity turns out to be a giant dud then I might be tempted to get in touch with the 76chan admin, see about migrating /aus/ to their site. That is, if it's okay with the rest of you?

I don't know what his email is but I know he is at @76chanMod on twitter

It would probably be easier to just make a thread if you decide on http://76chan.org/76/ which is basically their /operate/ and ask for him to make an /aus/ board because they don't have a create your own board feature

Once the board is made it would be on a trial basis for a couple of days and if it gets no posts it would probably be removed but that shouldn't be a problem

The admin there has said that he welcomes more 8chan boards coming over and has said that he is fine with giving the BO of the 8chan board Board Owner status on their board there if they like

Overall so far I'd rate 76chan as a pretty solid alternative chan even if just used as a bunker chan until something happens regarding wait for the next post for Infinitychan

Or we can all go to masterchan and get v&

 No.38705

Thanks m8. I'm still not sure if I'll go over there immediately or if I'll wait it out and see how the eventual migration goes. My main concern is that if I leave it too long to take some sort of action, whether we'll have any users left at all, haha.

On a somewhat fun side note, me and Janitor 1 were discussing the possibility of maybe setting up our own new chan just for /aus/, an Auschan (not saying we're definitely doing it, we were just floating ideas). It occurred to us that someone probably tried it in the past - lo and behold, they had. We found their status blog, last entry January 2013: http://auschanstatus.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/auschan-back-online-sort-of.html

Look at the comments. Circa the end of 2013/beginning of 2014, people are saying that Auschan.org (which seemed to have been up for 3+ years) was down, and that the new URL was http://au.vichan.net

Try that URL. Try it and you'll shit a fucking brick. I know me and Janitor 1 both did.

So that raised the question of why the fuck is that URL still active and who was the former owner. I personally was interested in contacting him and finding out how Auschan became popular in the first place and why it died. Did a lot of research and…well, we determined the real name and identity of the former Auschan admin and it looks like he actually died sometime around September or October 2013. That was a bit of a headfuck.

However, it still left the question of how the fuck that vichan.net URL is redirecting to /aus/, particularly considering how 8chan itself wasn't founded until after the former Auschan owner died. The guy used to own an IT company and the URL for it is long defunct, owned by some legal firm these days, so I doubt the dead man's bank accounts are paying for it and I doubt he set it up himself.

Vichan is the engine that 8chan runs on (a Tinyboard fork) but why does aus.vichan.net specifically redirect here? Why doesn't pol.vichan.net redirect to /pol/, for example? Who owns aus.vichan.net and who set it up? Can the people behind engine.vichan.net (the group that developed vichan) help explain what's going on here?

Find out the answers to all this and more in the next episode of "Confused drunk board owner in the middle of the night"!

This board is a bit too /pol/-esque for me to relate to. I'd say others would feel the same. I prefer bants to "the jews did everything! I know this because I dropped out of year 9 and smoked a heap of bongs with a bloke who told me."

 No.38733

I don't really post much here but the decline of /aus/ is not anything special just faster than the rest of the site, 8chan is declining very quickly in popularity and /aus/ just seems to be on the faster end of it all

I guess this probably happened because of 3 reasons 1.The lack of nudes since the incident 2.CP Spam (Good job on tackling this though Hotpockets) 3.Australians aren't funny without someone to drop bants on (Hence why this board is really mundane but Australians on 4/int/ are top shit)

I think in the long run a new and independent site would probably help popularity as long as we are able to get the word out to attract new members

 No.38735

I reckon youse are on the money about it being a slow drain: not helped by, but not entirely due to the uncertainty of the migration.

But I reckon the key point is softcocks continuing to use shit like halfchan or plebbit while bitching about the lack of content on here. That probably doesn't speak for the users we still have left in /aus/, but I'd say it's true of the site as a whole. Very, very few people went cold turkey on their former habits when they made the shift to hatechang. I can kind of understand that mentality when the overall userbase isn't that active; but I know that I personally left m00t's dungpile for a fucking reason, and "lack of posts per hour" wasn't it.

 No.38745

>>38740

The frontpage not refreshing properly is part of the issues with site stability and is out of my control. Basically, board indexes have been set to not refresh every time the page is loaded by a user but instead after a certain amount of time (no idea how much time). Reloading the board index each time someone refreshed the page was a large factor contributing to the problems with excessive I/O writes piling up on the disks. It's the same situation on all small boards. The larger boards on their own server array (such as /pol/, /v/, /b/) either haven't had this feature configured or have much more frequent refresh rates, I'm not 100% sure.

That's my understanding of it anyway. It's applying a band-aid to someone with terminal cancer really, but I guess every little helps.

>>38735

That's the weird thing, the user drop-off seemed to really accelerate during the week after we finally got rid of the spam. There was a big sudden drop-off over the course of roughly a day due to all the spambots being banned, but then inexplicably the user-count kept going down in dribs and drabs. I'm guessing the uncertainty with the migration is behind it as people leave for greener pastures.

>>38743

I agree completely with your points and until the last week or two I'd been exclusively using 8ch since the Exodus. Even I got tired of the slow pace on this site. The quality of discussion is definitely better but part of the reason I use imageboards is because they can be a fantastic timesink - if things are going slowly, there's only so many times you can hit F5 before getting bored and looking elsewhere.

I realise that I'm essentially part of the problem now by using cuckchan again, but so far no one seems to have a solution.

Edit reason: really retarded spelling mistake.

On that note, maybe you could add something to the banner thingy (where you've got the AS SEEN ON TV bit) to say, "USE THE CATALOG, NOONGAS".

Good idea, I might just do that.

>Or are you talking about nixing political threads as a whole, save /auspol/?

I didn't really explain in detail how I'd do this, sorry. General politics discussion would be encouraged to stay in /auspol/ but politics threads on specific subjects which need their own discussion thread would also be allowed. That way you don't have any one subject dominating /auspol/ conversation too much to the detriment of other topics. However, derailment of other threads into political discussion would be discouraged.

It's a tricky thing to moderate, you can't ever keep everyone happy unfortunately.

Actually, we've had two spam posts in the last 10 hours, which brings us up to only three spam posts during the last 2 whole weeks. I can happily say that the user increase is not because of spammers.

Me and one of the janitors posted in an Australian politics thread on /pol/ yesterday evening and explained that the spam problem has been curtailed and tried to encourage people to come back. Looks like some people did indeed come back, now it's just a question of whether they stick around.

Nothing increases activity on dying boards more effectively than a "we're dying what do?" meta thread. Guaranteed replies.

>>38793

Noticed those posts and thought it wasn't a bad idea.

As far as I can tell, one of hatechin's biggest stumbling blocks is that once a community gets entrenched, it becomes really fucking isolated. Users cluster around their favourite topics, and piss and moan about the lack of traffic.

I've seen it happen with more than a few promising /bwithvideogames/ alternatives, namely /vr/ and /svidya/. They're related, but they never have any crossover, save maybe link at the top of the board that barely anybody notices.

I reckon board owners and community members need to do more to increase cross-board interaction. I'm not entirely sure how, because all interactions either seem to be one-off event promotions (/baphomet/'s Tea Party; /metal/'s Halloween party), or things that run the risk of becoming entrenched shilling (pretty much every board other than /his/ who ran movie nights).

That last part's the key, I reckon: people are scared. Scared to be seen as shills. Scared to advertise, because who the fuck wants the population of /b/ to come to their cosy corner of the Interbutts?

Sorry for the essay, m80s, but this is something that's been on my mind for a while, and I reckon we need to take steps to fix it.

Of course, the move to Infininoongas might provoke a surge in cross-board exploration and I might be talking out of my arse.

That was myself. I assumed that since it was just a link to a website, without any context, without any opinions or comments on the matter, without anything but a link, that it was spam. So I deleted it and put a 2week ban* on the IP.

I checked the IP before banning, and saw no previous posts from it. You can see why it could easily be mistaken as pointless anti-jew spam from huehuehue/pol/ or some stupid shit like that. I've removed the ban (one day early, but you did only appeal it yesterday, so I doubt you were too traumatized)

Hey, just thought I'd step in here for a moment to offer my 2 cents. The CP spammer isn't the only exclusive spammer we face, we do once in a while get random one-off spammers who just drop a link and never post again. I imagine that the janitors are in a similar mindset to me when it comes to these sorts of posts, which is to just reflexively delete them.

It looks like a duck, quacks like a duck - it's probably a duck. However in this instance a mistake was made and more attention should have been given before reaching for that big ol' delete button. I can't undelete your post but I am sorry it happened.

However…

I do question what relevance a thread about jews being allowed guns would have had to /aus/. If this was American news then bring it up in /auspol/ if you want but don't make a thread about it. On the other hand, was this concerning kikes here in Australia being allowed to carry guns? If so then yeah nah that's pretty big and thread-worthy.

This applies not just to you but anyone reading this: next time try and make a better thread - even if your thread hadn't been deleted, it probably wouldn't have gone far due to it just being a link with no context. Creating threads where the OP is just a link without context is utterly cancerous; try and quote some of the news story, maybe give your own opinion on it just to stir shit up and get things going! Don't be so bland and lazy!

Quality threads can in turn increase the quality and attractiveness of the board.

 No.38834

The CP spam was why I stopped checking /aus/ for a few weeks. Might have just been unlucky, but every time I opened the catalog it was there. Aside from just not wanting to see it I doubt the police would understand how it's unintentional and even if they do it's still not something you want to deal with so paranoia sets in.

Top advice, and good to see you crack down on that kind of shit. It's been happening quite a bit on /tg/ in the lead up to Commercial Holiday #341, where it's pretty obvious shilling, and it makes you wonder how regular users - especially on hatechan - can be so thick as to reply.

I wouldn't get rid of general politics-related threads. They're probably the only threads you see here that have non-shitposting discussion. Some people do go way too tinfoil with it, but I think it's important that people do take a moment to stop and recognise that Australia is degrading and losing it's national identity.

Take away any political discussion and you're pretty much left with NEET threads and not much more.

 No.38863

>>38862

I did give a bit more detail about my thoughts on this matter in a later post: >>38765

Political subjects and topics that are fairly important would definitely be allowed their own independent threads so that they didn't dominate the discussion in the /auspol/ thread.

Again, this is just me throwing out ideas and seeing what people think of them so I can get feedback like yours. As business faggots would call it in the corporate world, it's a bit of 'brainstorming', to find out what drives people away and what will attract them here.

I do not intend to implement any of these rules at the present or in the foreseeable future. So far I've been fairly lassez faire with this board (my panicked and admittedly somewhat poor reaction to The Fappening earlier in the year notwithstanding) and I'd like to keep it that way, the majority of you do a pretty good job at policing yourselves. When you start setting rules in stone and saying 'you can't do this, you can't do that, you have to do this, etc. etc.' then it becomes boring and tedious and sucks the fun out of things until the community dies. I've seen it happen enough times on other sites, please kill me if I ever let it happen here.

 No.38871

I do think the board will probably get a little more traffic the further australia goes down the hole. Firstly, I should have paid more attention to what was going on on my own board rather than just giving a cursory look at the front page to make sure there's nothing illegal, and then reading only the threads that interest me. These days I make sure to check out all the active threads to keep an eye on what's going on, if I'd been doing the same thing back then then I would have sooner noticed the images that could have been considered CP and could have deleted them quickly. The Fappening still would have become a media event but I doubt it would have been quite as blown out of proportion as it was without that particular piece of ammo for the press.

Second, I simply shouldn't have panicked and deleted the whole thing based purely on the possibility (rather than a known certainty) that it might have been illegal and risked me getting in trouble. I should have stood my ground. Going about it the way I did just made me look like an indecisive panicking idiot, which I was. I felt it conveyed mixed and unclear messages to you all about what was and wasn't allowed around here; I prefer not to be vague like that.
