But yeah nah, I'd say break up the more heavily populated states but all of their large populations are concentrated mainly into the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Maybe they'd be better off as city state territories similar to Canberra, with NSW and Vic separate from them?

I'm not huge on the geography and ecology of western Australia but is there a reason why we can't make the west as populated as the east?

Yes. We need more states. Each capital city should be its own state, (which means splitting each state at least in half).

Our states are fine, we have a small population and most of the nation is a barren wasteland anyway.

We do need more states, and more powerful states. At the very minimum, the Riverina needs to break off from NSW, and NQ needs to break off from Queensland.

Australia's leftists are smart though, they know that decentralisation of power would destroy them. I've even encountered a lot recently that advocate for abolishing the states and just having one massive federal government.

Smaller states means less people are over looked and services are better, there already is an utterly disproportionate focus on city infrastructure (freeways, tunnels, bridges, passenger trains) while 50 year old rural infrastructure continues to fucking rot.

Services in less populated more rural areas should not be focused on as they have less people, if 100 people benefit from one thing but 5 benefit from doing the same thing somewhere else then it makes sense to do it for the 100. It is all a matter of spending money on things proportionate to those that live there so spending millions on some project in the middle of a desert would just be stupid and money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Also, even the smaller states would still either only get money from the federal government proportionate to the population and/or would get money from taxes from the people living in the state but again if their are few there the taxes would be small as well so in the end nothing would change.

Yes, they should be. Much of the wealth of every state in Aus comes from regional areas via mining, agriculture etc. Yet these communities get nothing back from it. Almost all taxes in NSW go to providing new trains and services to Sydney, when Sydney is already overcrowded.
