Me and the janitor did some research a while back into Auschan and what happened to it. These are some notes I wrote up during our research expedition for the convenience of my janitor and a few others to read. Names of the previous owner and my contact have been redacted for the sake of privacy, although you'd probably be able to find the name of the previous owner yourself if you wanted to bother trying. I'll make another post after this explaining why we went to all this effort.

-Spoke to a guy called [REDACTED] who was apparently an admin on Auschan until he had a falling out with the owner

-Auschan was created 7 years ago by the man we know as [REDACTED] aka [REDACTED]

-[REDACTED] advertised it by simply spamming 4chan and dropping links all over the place for a solid half year

-I was kind of hoping he managed to build the site's popularity through some other methods, but oh well…

-Originally the site ran on Wakaba software but migrated to Kusabax at some point

-As time went by [REDACTED] fell victim to the curse that afflicts nearly all admins of small imageboards: power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

-Things were going fine but [REDACTED] got over ambitious and added about 20 different boards that no one used

-Kept adding faggots as mods, apparently made his gf a mod at one point

-Wouldn't listen to user complaints about anything

-My contact, '[REDACTED]', had a falling out with [REDACTED BOARD OWNER] about a year before he died. [REDACTED CONTACT] warned [REDACTED BOARD OWNER] that he was killing the site with excessive ads and too many boards for so few users.

-The excessive ads thing matches up with some of the stuff you and I found, guy sounded like a greedy cunt

-Despite being ~40 years of age, he still lived with his parents. His company, [REDACTED IT COMPANY], went broke.

-He was a fucking NEET who's main sources of income were the dole and Auschan ad revenue

*Interlude so you can catch your breath after laughing at the sad life of [REDACTED]*

-Apparently was quite technologically incompetent

-Used shitty webhosts, servers were slow and overloaded (hey, that sounds familiar…), couldn't figure out how to use basic things like htaccess rules

-Not really surprising his company failed

-Tried to make the site look like it was hosted on Apple servers for some bizarre reason, by adding the Apple logo to 404 pages

-Tried to sell the domain for $100,000 (!?!?)

-Site was dying/on a downward trajectory when he died

-Considering his life circumstances (41 year old man living at home on the dole, everything he touched failed) I'm assuming it was suicide

-Shortly after he died someone spammed it with CP. There were no mods to remove it so the hosting service simply deleted the site.

-.org domains are typically leased for periods of 1 year to 10 years…apparently [REDACTED] went for the 10 year option when he last renewed it, which was a year or two before his death (I think). In other words, auschan.org won't be free for several more years.

So yeah. All that was done because we were curious as to how Auschan became popular in the first place, and how it ultimately failed. I guess owner suicide is kind of a big 'game over', so that was a bit of a depressing conclusion.

We were curious about these things because with all the problems 8ch has had over the last several months, me and the janitorial staff have been giving serious consideration to either moving the board to an alternate chan (my personal pick at the moment being 76chan) or setting up our own brand new auschan, which is also why I spent quite some time researching which imageboard software would be best for the job - safe to say, Infinity Next was a solid last :^)

And in the spirit of openness, here are some of my basic notes regarding a few of the main alternatives and also the drawbacks of migrating.

Options:

lynxchan - lynxhub.com

-Has some nifty antispam features such as image OCR. Can detect text on images and ban based on that.

-Not too fond of the UI but the antispam features are very tempting.

-Engine doesn't use PHP - seems to use JS? :/

-Creator of it claims it doesn't require a webserver, 'the software handles the http requests by itself' (that sounds a lot like a webserver to me!). Not sure I'd be completely confident in a software whose creator makes such unusual claims.

-Software also hasn't undergone stress testing such as C10k test. Don't know if it could be potentially knocked over by someone flooding the site.

-Other users in [IRC CHANNEL REDACTED] claim that Lynx isn't really ready for a production environment and that despite its developer's claims to the contrary, it should still be considered in development and not practical for real-world use.

-Apparently lacking a lot of frontend and backend features common to most imageboard software. Doesn't even have bells and whistles such as thread expansion or thread-watching. Lack of shiny features that are assumed to be a given on other major imageboards (8ch, 4chan) could potentially drive away new users, site could be seen as feature sparse/amateurish.

-Overall, antispam features aside I'd be inclined to give this a miss.

vichan - engine.vichan.net / au.vichan.net

-Owner of vichan, czaks, is willing to give us au.vichan.net and help us administer it.

-Probably want to move away from vichan engine though, having become familiar with limitations and capabilities on 8ch.

-Still a proven and reliable software - we know how it works and what to do with it, could always use it on our own site (if we make our own site).

-Some basic research on czaks suggests he's a decent guy, however it still raises question of whether we'd want to trust having our community in someone else's hands. Full control would be preferable.

76chan.org

-8ch's /sp/ community has fled to 76chan.

-A /sp/artan has suggested that the 76chan admin would probably be open to the idea of establishing /aus/ there.

-Runs vichan

-He also says that some /sp/artans are considering making their own chan if things on 76chan don't work out - could join them perhaps? Shitposters in arms?

-Again, raises the problem of putting our community in someone else's hands. In this case, someone we don't know at all.

COMMON THEMES ACROSS ALL OF THESE SITES:

-LOW USER COUNT

-/aus/ WOULD BE ANOTHER SMALL SUB-BOARD ON ANOTHER OBSCURE INSIGNIFICANT CHAN

End thoughts:

-If we migrate to one of these sites, most of our remaining userbase probably wouldn't follow us - we'd just be another board on another obscure chan and nothing much would change.

-However, if we establish our own site (maybe see if we can get the old auschan.org domain?) and do some advertising, we could potentially establish ourselves independently rather than playing second fiddle to someone else's site.

-The question still remains of how Auschan became successful in the first place and how it supported itself. As of 9.35AM (Update: now 11.40AM) I'm waiting for someone called '[REDACTED]' to log into [REDACTED IRC CHANNEL]. He apparently helped czaks set up au.vichan.net after Auschan went down. There is some vague hope that he might have useful info on the history of Auschan that could help us figure out our possibilities.

I would be a bit worried about running an independent auschan to be honest, think about what happened with the Adelaide nudes.

Even if it's hosted overseas who fucking knows what idiotic things our government might do. They probably could find the admin if they really wanted to even with if the host was uncooperative, the admin could get done under some new revenge porn law or something stupid like that.
