What I take away from this story is that, under the guise of "politeness", of protecting people from being offended (in itself a dubious aim), we are less tolerant than ever today.
A sign that a society is functioning is the dirty jokes we tell about one another. The closer two people feel towards one another, the filthier the jokes that can be told.
Rob Thomas told the same joke twice, to - presumably - a white audience. The first line was safe to laugh at because it dealt with a human universal – a tendency towards alcoholism.
The second line was not safe, because abos are The Other, not human, not fellow citizens, who live somewhere out there, definitely not one of Us, and therefore are only to be acknowledged "as the original owners of this land on which I am about to deliver a public speech", but otherwise unmentioned.
