My friend from High school joined, joined standard army. Said the worst part was the two month boot camp, he said it's longest two months of your life but everything after that is downhill.
He got put into a job doing clerical work which he got recognized training for in canberra putting through lieutenants from the academy into training courses. He lived on site had his meals cooked for him and said it was an ok existence except for the fact it was Canberra and there was nothing to do.
My sisters friend was in the navy as a cook for the gap year but she didn't last long, the navy is much more lax and prone to trouble than the rest of the branches but they do travel a lot and seeing as the future of the Australian navy will be in Asia speaking relevant languages is a bonus.
You need to be fit and a good swimmer but brush up on your basic maths as I worked with a guy who wanted to join but he failed because he didn't pass the maths part since he was out of highschool for 5 years.
Make sure you check your online presence like facekike and anything else as they will check that too
