How mutually intelligible is a Taiwan accent versus your average beijing accent? I'm learning Chinaman speak and so far it seems like a lot of good resources and stuff are from Taiwan, but I don't want to limit myself to just one tiny island country

Also should I put much effort in knowing how to handwrite characters? I'm not planning on going to Taiwan anytime soon, but on the other hand I don't want to be some retard who can't write.

Never been to Taiwan, but unless you really like food, I would not advise PRC.

They kept the traditional characters because the simplification was done by the gommies, and they were considered fine the way they were.
