Welcome to Baltic.

This thread is to decide the rules for /baltic/.

Everyone can write the basic rules they want and would prefer to see. My suggestions:

1) Lewd permitted, but must be spoilered

2) Languages: Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and English. Dialects allowed.

Add your own.

3) Russian flags get automatically banned and globally reported

Wouldn't Belarus be more fitting than Russia considering the name?

Post your favourites or stuff you'd recommend.

To start off, here's some decent Estonian craft booze.

I recently had a good laugh about the third bottle.

You all know it looks like a vagina, right? It is not like it is news to anyone?

There's even a limited edition cherry version of it they make from time to time. Image related.

Since I don't know too much about the good alcoholic substances made in LV and LT, here's my favourite from Latvia so far:

Riga Black Balsam

More bitter than your usual Jägermeister, it feels like a true medicinal liquor of old.

P.S. Should I make a thread for the local bookplates/ex libris we can find? Found quite a few examples from ET and LV online.

Thread about symbols and ancient Latvian signs. In this thread you will be able to see the old signs and their versions. You will be able to look at a simple scarf or hat from Latvia and "translate" what it means. You will be able to compare the symbolic meanings with ones from your own country.

Not to be confused with the occult and paganism. These signs were used by everyone and considered to be guardians or bringers of good signs. While there were some "witches" who knew what signs to draw in their house and there are legends about all houses burning down, except theirs, we do not have to hold that view.

These signs appear in a lot of places and are really important. If you build a house, you need a sign for "house" placed somewhere. Your granary needs "prosperety" and the like.

While they had fallen out of popularity because of obvious reasons, they are reemerging and more and more young people recognize them and see them as important.

Arrows of Laima/Brush of Laima/Conifer needles

Protection/Luck/Destiny

This is a sign that protects you, so it is smart to engrave it in places near your small child. Like cradle and bed.

Laima is the mother of your destiny. You can't ask particular luck from her in any single instance. You can encourage her to give you a peaceful and easy life without many hardships. The occasions you can use it for instant gain is when you feel that someone has cursed you, then this "broom" is said to clean the curse away.

This is the last sign of the most important 3 signs as for 3 gods. All other are important, but one can say that in these ones everything else is included

Cross of Thunder/ Firecross

Protection/Power

Like 2 crossed lighnings. A lot of people claim that when it goes clockwise, it has the old, great, glorified and respected meaning, but anti-clockwise it is just another sign balts use. That is basically not true. Old balts never pointed out to their children "do not draw it the other way, we are saving that one for other causes."

This is power.Winter really only ends when the first thunder has been heard in the spring, so it is considered that the Thunder god cleans everything out and gets everything ready for the spring.

This sign is drawn on swords and armor, as it is said to give one power. There were people who placed a bracelet of Thunder cross on their children when they were born and the grandchildren will take it off when he dies.

One of the funniest signs, as it is always nice to see Germans who see Nazzi hats offered to them in the market. Also, this is always shown in Russian media as proof that Latvians… Like hats or something.

Jumis

Prosperity

Combination of the Sign of Māra and the first sign.

This one has no double meaning at all, but is all about doubles.

It is a symbol of prosperity and every wheat or fruit that has grown together is a Jumis, as it shows "two fruits from one stem". This one is always drawn all around the house. If you look closely in an old home, you will notice it in kitchen, in granary, everywhere.

Whenever you want to loot and pillage, evade places with signs of Thunder cross and aim at a house where you see this sign. Then hope that it has worked for them.

Ūsiņš [oosynsh]

Safety/Horses

Like 2 "E" joined with their backs.

This is the sign for horses. Everything to do with horses, you add this sign. Get them ready for winter? Want to sell them? One is having birth? This sign.

It is used, of course, on all horse related things, but also on gloves. Gloves with this sign has a special name "atslēgaiņi" (unlockers or keyholders) and it is said to bring luck when traveling.

This is the third and last demi-god signs.

04d45b No.85[Reply]

Thread about old Soviet army bases, living quarters and the likes.

It is worth to mention that, before Rus left Baltic states, they sabotaged all the mechanisms that could have been of worth. Everything got drilled and broken so that it can not be used.

Also, old buildings. Many of them were army bases (usually at the sea coast) so that people would not escape and there is no more need for them.

Many were artificially built "cities" with a big house next to a factory. Those were unsustainable in the long run without heavy government subsidies.

Towers of Upīškalns.

Used to be more of them, now only 3 are left. 1 is left unsupervised, that one has the most visitors. Climbing in them is not particularly legal, but people don't really give a fuck. I've never heard of anyone being arrested and out of many times I've been there I've had no problems.

245 m high, rusted out, some steps missing along the way, shakes in wind and no safety guards behind your back or anything. Everyone welcome.

Liepājas Army port. Old port, used for military navy ships.

Now the infrastructure is in order and people can visit it. It is possible to have group excursions where they will make you go through a little of what people in the prison had to go through.

> But wait, you said it is a military port, what prison?

In USSR everything was made in a prison.
