It's a casual linear turn-based RPG with STG/shmup dodging gameplay, varying timing-based attack gameplay (based on your equipped weapon), and simple puzzles.
You can choose whether or not to kill enemies throughout the game. It has three different main branches of endings depending on how much you kill (it remembers who you did and didn't kill, and what you did in previous playthroughs, so it has decent replay value to view all possible content in the game). It does a mediocre job of making you feel bad for being a heartless monster, as some parts will still make you laugh instead of feel bad.
The story is somewhat interesting, and it has a few interesting characters. The humor is anywhere from legitimately funny lighthearted moments to absolute cringe (there's a socially autistic lesbian weeb that uses social media in the game). The art is inconsistent but decent, and the music varies from mediocre to decent, with one really good track. Overall it's a good game, but way overrated with a cancerous furry and memelord fanbase.

Sounds more like a mediocre game that does nothing new in terms of story or gameplay and only got popular because of the autistic designs and the minority characters. Is this essentially the next coming of Gone Home?

In its defense, the gay robot he's talking about is actually a gag character that looks and acts extremely flamboyant, likes to strike weird poses, and is implied to have a female ghost that wanted to become popular living inside it. The skeletons are funny and no skeltal memes are used. you are still correct regardless

It's a very simple story "game" that got popular because the creator of said game is popular within the Homosuck fanbase for making music for Homosuck. The gameplay is very simplistic and is basically just either "press attack, watch the slow bar move into the middle, press again to hit" or "you've met this creature three times before, just do the usual thing to spare it". There are also dodging parts which can range from easy to a little difficult, depending on the enemy/boss.
It's mostly popular because of the simplistic characters (this skeleton likes spaghetti a lot, so he is funny) and the story which encourages you to not be a dick simply by making the genocide route a fucking chore. If you want to view true autism, all you have to do is go over to /v/ and look at their Undertale threads.
