>yfw you realize that Bane has crashed planes before which explains why he was so confident in his master plan and why it worked so well, as if he had done that sort of thing before.
>Bane at one point had to fight CIA's friend, Arryungar Mahn, on a plane that Bane was trying to crash
>An admirable fighter, he almost bests Bane but makes the mistake of trying to throw him out of the plane without shooting him.
>this proves to be his undoing and Bane counters by having Arryungar Mahn shot before he thrown out of the plane which is subsequently crashed with no survivors.
>Flight plan and black box indicates this, CIA swears revenge on Bane
This explains why CIA who originally did not want to let Dr. Pavel bring "friends" is suddenly interested when Masketta tells him that the hooded men work for Bane ("BANE?"). It also explains CIA's change in demeanor when Bane says:
>Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a Mahn before throwing him out of a plane.
Because CIA adopted the practice after realizing not doing so is what got his friend killed. The whole tale is one of revenge, a lust for revenge that can prove to be one's undoing. This is very much a theme explored in the extended universe as well. Nolan does it again.

Makes one wonder how Arryungar Mahn looked like. Was he a big guy as well? Maybe CIA looked up to him. I can't see him being a hothead but would not shooting a man before throwing him out of a plane count as a hotheaded move or did he simply not have the chance since Bane is the pinnacle of manliness?

>German
>Larger than Bane
>May have actually been too much for him to handle
>Had to be shot to crash his plane
>Worked for the government
At this point it is becoming increasingly clear that the government was trying to create their own armies of big guys. Mahn was a super-soldier created by former Nazi scientists in a secret bunker in Germany that was the last of his kind due to the fact that he was created via an experimental formula at the end of the war in a desperate bid to turn things around. However, there wasn't enough time to salvage the war effort. With the war essentially over before more work could be done and Mahn being forced into a tight situation, he decided to work the American government, rejecting other offers in favor of theirs. America tried to create their own army of big guys using remnants of the formula found but each version was smaller than the original since the original was a tailor-made test formula for Mahn specifically.
It's all too clear now. Now we understand why Bane wanted Dr. Pavel. Bane wanted to have Dr. Pavel make a formula that would make him even bigger. Thanks to modern technology and Pavel's work in nuclear science, Bane wanted an atomic solution to the problem America's scientists had when creating the formula. Something that could make a big guy big, could make a big guy even bigger. The solution to that problem, the special component for this new formula that would give Bane the edge?
Gamma radiation.
Pic very much related.

I know I'm not the only brother here who holds the belief that, at least, Bane and CIA are brothers (I extend this to Masketta and Bruce Wayne in the expanded universe as well). But my central pillar of that theory is that they all share the same last name: Man. As stated in the Bravo scripts (CIA Man, Masked Man, Militia Man, Bat Man).
Perhaps I've been spelling it wrong. Or perhaps there simply is a fifth brother. This is a terrifying development.

Don't forget about the mystery of Dr. Pavel's name.
Pavel is a first name, not a surname. More over, CIA refers to him as Paveleer, presumably Pavel is the shortened version of his full first name. Last names aren't shortened, only given names are.
While it is strange to refer to a doctor by their title and first name, it does prove that there is some mystery shrouding his last name. It is clearly guarded information. Perhaps CIA doesn't even know what Pavel's last name is, as Dr. Pavel told him nothing.
Could it be? Is Dr. Pavel a secret lost brother of the Man's?

I don't know, but it sounds like the name of a weapon to me. Like the Gáe Bulg of Irish mythology. Maybe it's a gun or other modern weapon fashioned from the wreckage of a crashed plane?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A1e_Bulg
>It was made from the bone of a sea monster, the Coinchenn, that had died while fighting another sea monster, the Curruid. Although some sources make it out to be simply a particularly deadly spear, others—notably the Book of Leinster—state that it could only be used under very specialized, ritual conditions:
>The Gáe Bulg had to be made ready for use on a stream and cast from the fork of the toes. It entered a man's body with a single wound, like a javelin, then opened into thirty barbs. Only by cutting away the flesh could it be taken from that man's body.
Sounds like a big weapon you can only use if you are standing in ceremony.

Interesting theorem. I presume that Bane thought Knuthing was long dead. He mentions them to the furfag in the sewers because they were notable opponents. He is bluffing, of course. Knuthing and A. Mahn could take on Bane one handed. Bane must have gotten the drop on Knuthing with a cheap shot. That is the same case for A. Mahn's death, too. Its probable that A. Mahn is actually dead, however I suspect that Dr Pavel operated on Knuthing's wounds. Band caught wind of this and wanted Dr Pavel to say where Knuthings whereabouts are. He must have squealed, because Bane eventually disposes of Dr Pavel.
We are getting close, big guys. I feel we are close to the final answer.

I have two thoughts
Think about how Mahn is actually pronounced in the movie by the characters. The "batman" is just a corruption of Bat Mahn. Only Bane calls him by his real name through out the film.
Maybe Bruce's fear of bats was symbolic of his fear of his family name and his brothers. When Bruce Mahn put on his own mask he abandoned his first name in favor of his "fear." Which goes back to the significance of the masks in general. Bat Mahn's mask of course reflects his fear. Bane's probably reflects his pain. However, did Bane change his own first name when he "put on the mask?" What significance does the name have then? What's his real name?

By creating a mask, you discard your old identity in favor of someone people will care about, usually by taking something you fear for good reason and gaining power over it, thus becoming a Big Guy by becoming your fear.. That's why it'd be extremely painful to take of the mask, as you are robbed of your power and exposed to your fear. Bat Mahn is obvious, but what does Bane's mask indicate he is afraid of?
