You are William “Bill” Wilson, of the United States of America's own Central Intelligence Agency. You've been sent on a mission to retrieve a certain foreign scientist. You've arrived at your destination, and your local contacts are meant to be bringing the scientist to meet you at the airport.

Your inventory is as follows:

-A handgun, fully loaded

-A briefcase containing your local contacts' payment

-A plane

-A feeling of being in charge

Your party includes:

-Smee – A United States Special Forces soldier

-Maimen – A United States Special Forces soldier

-Sir? – A United States Special Forces soldier

How do you prepare for their arrival?

>Chill out inside the plane

>Chat with your party

>Wait silently out front, flanked by your party members, with your hands surrounding your belt buckle

You decide the best idea is to stand there silently, alert and ready to pounce as soon as the package arrives. After a few hours, or possibly days, you see a jeep approaching. This is it. Your time to shine. You make sure your hands are in place, legs are spread widely apart, and your body is turned just off centre. The perfect stance for showing off your credentials.

The hum of the engine gets stronger as the jeep races towards you across the open field next to the airstrip. It stops a few metres away from you, and a group of men get out. You instantly recognise one of them as the leader of the local group you deal with. You can't quite remember his name, but whenever you look at him you hear a strange, small buzzing noise, like a tiny insect. Next to him you see an older man, greying hair and a large nose. You recognise him from the photos in the dossier. This is Dr. Pavel.

It's best to introduce yourself and make sure Dr. Pavel doesn't have any wrong ideas about what's happening to him while you hand the briefcase to your contact. What do you say?

> Something British: “Dr. Pavel, I presume.”

> Something bold and presumptuous: “Dr. Pavel, I'm CIA.”

> Something reasonable: “Dr. Pavel, I'm Agent Wilson. I work for the CIA.”

> Stand there silently are glare at them

stand there silently and glare at them

I'm pretty sure this is a foolproof choice

 No.85837

Against some of your better judgement, you decide to not say a word. Your eyes lock with the contact's, and the buzzing noise intensifies. Does he only have two eyes? For some reason it feels like he should have more. The awkwardness continues, your party growing more restless. Hopefully, their uneasiness won't result in a shootout.

Knowing that the first person to speak in a negotiation is more likely to lose, the contact remains quiet. The men with him pull out of the back seat of the vehicle three men with black bags over their heads. They're not talking either. Not yet, anyway.

What do you do?

>Introduce yourself (in what manner)?

>Ask about the men in the back, why do they wear the bags?

>Remain silent, intensify your stare

You're not going to give up that easily. If these guys aren't going to break, neither are you. You narrow your eyes slightly in determination. The buzzing continues, and the more you stare at his face the longer the man's nose seems to get. From the corner of your eye you can see Dr. Pavel visibly perspiring. He clearly has no idea about the intense battle that is unfolding before his eyes. The locals are getting antsy, shuffling about and stroking their weapons. You know from experience that your own men are doing the same, less in nervousness than in preparation. You can't read the facial expressions of the men with bags over their heads. Probably because of the bags over their heads.

This fateful duel continues. You don't know how long it's been. Minutes? Hours? You would have noticed if it had been days. You're not sure how long you can keep this up. Not due to lack of stamina, no sir. If that were the case, you could go for years on only an IV drip. It's because the flight plan is waiting to be filed, and you have a sworn duty to file it.

The sky is getting dark. The wind is picking up. Trigger fingers are getting itchy. But still, you stare in silence. You've resorted to analysing every feature of the man's face, mapping every pore, every wrinkle and every hair in his lovely beard. You don't even know your own wife's face like this. It's totally worth it.

The armed men continue their shuffling, suffocating in the atmosphere of discomfort. Your own men seem to be getting ready for a fight. You can hear the velcro tearing as they open their pockets for easy access to extra ammunition and grenades. Dr. Pavel's reaching his breaking point. Any minute now, he might collapse and start writing around on the ground.

A slight grey/green tinge comes across the buzzing man's face. Sweat begins to erupt from his pores in Sectors B, D and F.

You wait for a few more minutes. The tension rises. It flows into your lungs with every breath. You see the mouth of the man begin to twitch. He's about to give in!

You decide to give the first blow, as he opens his mouth to speak. But the time for introductions is over. You're not going to ask any questions, either. You're going to demand answers!

“Tell me about them!” your voice booms across the airfield, shattering the fragile silence. Your finger rises and thrusts through the air towards the biggest of the three men at the back, who you realise now is quite big. “Why do they wear the bags?!”

Everyone is shocked by your outbursts. Hands reach for weapons in panic, Dr. Pavel throws himself back, expecting something terrible. The contact's eyes widen and his jaw hangs open as his brain tries to process this dramatic verbal barrage.

“Th-they were trying to grab your prize!” he finally manages to stutter out, “They work for the mercenary, the Masketta Man.”

Gears in your mind begin to turn. The man you are talking to is a mercenary, and you're pretty sure the dossier said that he went by the codename “Masketta”, now that you've been reminded of it. But why would he be referring to himself in the third person?

What do you do?

 No.85979

Masketta's finally opened up. Now that you've engaged in a dialogue it should be pretty easy to wrangle some information out of him. He's still rattled from the sudden outburst. And the fact that you've been staring silently at each other for several hours for no apparent reason. His men have calmed down, and brought the men in bags closer. Turning your head quickly to either side you see that your own men have also relaxed now that you're talking to him. It's probably best to check the Masketta Man's identity.

“At last, you can talk!” you declare, “Who are you?”. The man looks confused. After a few seconds of silence he finally answers you, repeating his last words.

“The Masketta Man.”

So that is his name. He's probably some kind of weirdo, referring to himself in the third person like that. It may be best for you to file the flight plan and get away from here. But you can't help but ask another question.

“Who paid you to grab Dr. Pavel?” you ask, “CIA?”

“Aye,” he responds in a truthful but confused fashion. He's handing the prisoners over to you, a CIA agent, in return for cash. Surely the connection is obvious.

What do you do now?

>Change the topic to something unrelated, like Bane

>Ask Dr. Pavel his opinion on these people

 No.85990

While he's here, you may as well get the Masketta Man's opinion on current events. Recently in this area there have been quite a few attacks by a mercenary group led by the legendary mercenary “Bane”. This is as good a time as any, so you pop the question. Plainly and simply, you as him.

“Bane?”

He nods. Probably expecting a follow up question.

He responds with “Aye?”.

This frequent use of 'aye'. Is he Scottish? The dossier didn't say so. If it's incorrect you should get that checked. Ittin would be the man to call about that. Either way, it seems he doesn't know much about Bane.

The exchange is almost over. There's more to say. It's written all over the faces of the Masketta Man and Dr. Pavel. With tension this high, though, you need to be a little jocular to keep the mood level. You turn to Dr. Pavel. He's still sweating profusely and his hair seems to be even greyer than when he arrived. Gesturing to the men in the hoods, you joke.

“Uh, you don't get to bring friends.”

Dr. Pavel is not impressed, and snaps back at you.

“They're not my friends!”

Woah, calm down there doctor. You're a nuclear scientist and all but surely you have some control rods to prevent you having a meltdown and becoming a hothead. It seems sure that you're going to take the bagged men, and the Masketta Man and his men seem keen to leave.

Even though Masketta is your local contact, you can't trust him. Rather than letting some unknowns onto your plane and filing a faulty flight plan, you'd better check the identities of the bagged men first. You gesture towards your men, indicating that they should bring these men, especially the big one, to their knees, so that you can get to interrogating them.

With a few harsh words a swift kicks, the men are on their knees. You move towards them, a certain sense of dread coming across you. The largest of the three men is rather big. You doubt that in a one-on-one fight you could take him. But when he is handcuffed and you are armed, the odds are in your favour. He will be the easiest man to de-bag, as you don't have to bend down at all.

Slowly, you drag the bag off his head. As you do so, he gives something of a pre-recorded response. It doesn't seem to be coming from his mouth, but fills the area in its entirety.

“No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.”

By 'the mask' was he referring to the black bag? As you remove it further, that idea is challenged. In front of you, on his knees, is a large, bald man wearing some kind of rebreather or gas mask. It distorts his voice, rendering anything he says barely comprehensible.

What do you do?

The masked man bears a striking resemblance to some one you've seen in the CIA database. Someone important, like an international terrorist of some kind. The sort of man whose capture would definitely put a feather in your cap. After a few moments of soul-searching and mental cog-turning, you divine the answer to his identity. But rather than tell him you know who he is, you decide to ask him, and get a confession out of him.

He's kneeling there, bald head reflecting the fading sunlight. The mask seems grotesque. He's big, but as long as he is cuffed and your party have their weapons he won't be any trouble to you. Staring straight at him, you confirm his identity.

“Bane?”

He looks up at you. His eyes twinkle, but it's a limited experience. There's somewhere else he'd rather be while making this exchange. Stuck here, on the tarmac, though, he's forced to answer your questions.

Rather than admit to his own existence, he attempts to be cryptic about it.

“No one cared who I was until I put on the mask”, he says, trying a dramatic reveal even though his face is already exposed. His statement makes a lot of sense, and no sense at all. He put on the mask when he started his terrorist activities. Surely he's not getting correlation and causation confused, is he?

He seems to be making a big deal out of that mask. Did no one really care who he was until he put it on? You suppose it makes a good conversation piece. Like being at a party and being really big. People will often make comments about it. But there is something special about this mask. It changes the way Bane's voice sounds, and his breathing sounds a bit laboured. It also must be quite uncomfortable, and make it difficult for him to shave. With all of those problems it must have some sort of medical necessity.

A lightbulb flashes above your head. If it's medical in nature, then it might be a sore spot for him. A weakness. It might be a good idea to press this idea to try to get him in a more vulnerable position.

“If I pull that off will you die?” you ask, in a manner both fascinated and taunting.

Bane looks you straight in the eyes. Without a trace of irony or sarcasm, he responds.

“It would be extremely painful.”

An honest confession. Here's a man who's not afraid to state what will hurt him. But at least you've found his weakness.

Bane clearly places a lot of importance on his mask. It's as though he thinks that 'Bane' and 'the Mask' are synonymous. If it hurts his sense of self, and causes him physical pain, you reason that it would be helpful to take it off. Maybe he'll enjoy not wearing the mask? It will certainly make him more approachable in social situations.

You reach out your hand towards the steel tubing around his mouth. The moment you place your hand on his face, you feel a cold sensation, as though all the heat is being drawn from your hand into his jaw. You reach futher, to get a better grip of the straps around his face. If this were a different situation such an action would be considered romantic. As your skin makes contact with him, you can't help but want to compliment him.

“You're a big guy,” you note, tenderly

He looks into your eyes, longing being displaced by sadness as he takes his turn to speak.

“For you.”

Even though you had exceptional grades at school, college and in training at the CIA, you can't figure out what he means by this. He's a big guy for you? What could that possibly mean?

Ignoring the confusing statement, your fingers curl around the base of the mask, preparing to rip it from his skin. Before you can, he breaks out of his bonds and stands to his full, imposing height. Apparently he wasn't as well trapped as you were led to belive.

“No survivors!” he yells, as he grabs your throat, pulling you close to him as a hostage. Your men raise their weapons, standing off against the Masketta Man's men, who have also prepared for a fight. While your men are fewer in number and have no cover, they are special forces soldiers and should be able to hold their own. One man, who has his gun pointed at the giant holding you, begs for orders.

“Sir?” he says, hands trembling at the idea of shooting his superior.

Before Bane can give any orders, your spare hand grabs his arm and yanks it away from his throat. You're still in his grasp, but have enough space to move.

You can feel the warmth of his body as he holds you against it. Bane's strong arms and determination keep in such a position as to make rescue impossible. Your men continue their vigil, sights trained on their opponents and Bane's head and chest. He's a big guy, though, so the chest shots may not do too much. They're the best of the best so you have no doubt that if they were to fire they would hit their targets with the first round. But they need a distraction. Something to give them the advantage. Since your life, and all of their lives are on the line, you act rashly, twisting your head around until your forehead is against Bane's. The cold, lonely blue of his eyes draws you in. The longer you look into them, the more you see his pain. His rough childhood and the agony he endured. The love he held for a woman that would never be returned. The more you see, the more you want to hold him, and comfort him.

Without thinking, you tilt your head, and bring your lips to his mask. The cold, hard metal hides the soft, sensitive skin you long to see. He doesn't resist, but neither does his grip loosen. You keep pressing your mouth to the mask, and try sucking gently on the tubing around the side, but still Bane doesn't respond. It's sad that he won't accept your affection. If he would just open up, you wouldn't have to do this….

You twist your hand around behind your back, and solemnly give your men the signal. Gunshots echo out across the airstrip, and your hear the corpses of the Masketta Man and his men hit the ground. Smee cautiously checks the bodies to make sure they're dead. Maimen grabs Dr. Pavel, and hurries him into the plane. Sir? repositions himself, bringing the barrel of his rifle to the side of Bane's head. The infamous terrorist seems to know that it's over, but still won't release you.

 No.87321

“Was getting your men killed part of your plan?” you ask. From the dossier, Bane was extremely close with his men, even going so far as to refer to them all as 'brothers'. If you can appeal to this, maybe he will give himself up.

“It doesn't matter,” he says, his distorted metallic voice sounds unconcerned, but behind it you sense a hint of sadness. Regaining his resolve, he states, “What matters is our plan.”

That didn't work. He's a pretty goal-oriented person. An admirable quality. A man of his skill, determination and size would fit in well at the Company. If only things had been different….

You decide to change tact. If he can realise his mission has failed, he might be willing to come without a fuss. “You got yourself caught. Now what's the next step in your master plan?” A trace of irony works wonders in negotiations, making the weaker party acknowledge their own failings.

“I….” Bane's at a loss for words. He's not sure what exactly he can do here. He'd intended to fake a plane crash and make off with Dr. Pavel in the confusion. Thinking about it now, it might have been a better idea to just take him before, when you were all sitting in the jeep together. But none of that mattered now. “Is now the time for fear?”

Bane's hurt. Not physically, but emotionally. His master plan is in ruins, and the friends he brought are dead. What do you do?

He's a broken man. It makes you sorry to see this. He was once a towering giant in the intelligence community, with every agent wanting to bring him down and put the biggest feather in his cap. But now that he'd lost his men and failed to file his desired flight plan, he was a broken man.

The most merciful thing you could do for this brilliant, surprisingly big man, was to put him down, and give him the burial he deserved. If he were a Navy man, it would be a burial at sea. But Bane was a born air-man, wanting to feel nothing other than the wind against his bald head under the straps of his mask. It seemed only fitting to throw him out of your aircraft.

You order Smee and Sir? to get him on board. Bane's boots drag on the ground as he trudges towards your aircraft. The sad scraping of the rubber against the tarmac resounds around the airfield, appropriate in the aftermath of the shootout. Bane's muscular legs lift his legs up the staircase, a mighty metallic thud echoing out with every step. At the penultimate step, grief overcomes you.

“Wait!” you call, urging Smee and Sir? to halt their progress. They obey your orders with a hint of confusion. Forcing your body against it's will, you make your way up the stairs, passing the big guy.

“Please, turn around. Take a look at this beautiful Central Asian countryside one more time.” Bane looks around, attempting to take in the scenery. In the background, he sees the plains, mountains and fields of a rural developing country. In the foreground, however, he sees the corpses of his dead brothers.

Accessing your inventory, you withdraw your handgun. You point the barrel towards the head of the man contemplating the deaths of his friends. Can you really do this? Shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?

>Shoot him

>Don't shoot him

Your finger quivers on the trigger. You've never killed a man like this before. Sure, you've killed men. After all, you're CIA. But never have you given such a big man a small death. Sweat runs down the back of your neck, making your blue polo shirt uncomfortable. Your hands shake unable to keep the muzzle still. While this would, at other times, cause a problem, being at point blank range and with such an unmissable target, it shouldn't be a problem. Getting over the psychological barrier was the issue.

“Sir?” Sir? Asks. He can tell you're uneasy. He may be willing to take over for you, and have Bane's blood on his hands. But this is your burden to bear.

“I-I'm in charge here,” you state, the quiet trembling in your voice conveying the opposite meaning.

“Sir?” Sir? Asks again. He probably didn't hear you the first time.

“I'm in charge here!” You proclaim. You're not sure whether it's to Sir?, Bane, or yourself. But it certainly makes you feel in charge.

“Do you feel in charge?” Bane questions softly.

“I do,” you reply. For a brief moment, you can imagine saying those words to Bane in an entirely different context. But for now, this is your fate.

“You won't fly so good!” you yell, as you promptly squeeze the trigger. The sound quickly dissapates over the planes. The brains of Bane don't spray out across the tarmac as you expected. It seems like his mask did a reasonable job of keeping his head together. That's one reason to wear it, you suppose.

* * *

With the help of your men, you load Bane onto the plane. It takes all of you to lift such a big man, but eventually you heave him into a seat. After a few minutes of peaceful, contemplative flying, the voice of one of your men rings out.

“Sir?” Sir says, trying to grab your attention. It's really starting to get on your nerves how often he says that. You look out the window where he is pointing, having nothing else to do, and see a large plane bearing down on your small one.

 No.93712

The plane becomes dark as the bigger plane comes overhead, blocking the sun from entering the tiny windows. You quickly consider the situation. You filed a flight plan. Agent C wouldn't have allowed any other planes in the area. He's good friends with ATC. So that means the plane steadily overtaking your own must be a rogue plane. Probably belonging to Bane's brothers.

You race to the radio on the wall at the front of the plane. If this is one of the late Bane's master plans, you're going to need backup. You fiddle with the knobs until the frequency is right to get through to Ittin. As your superior and fellow flight-plan absolutist, he'll be able to help. The radio fizzes into life and you hear a sound come through the speaker.

“Welcome to the Central Intelligence Agency, Barbara Vivors speaking. How may I direct your call?”

“Call Ittin!” You say hurriedly, glancing out the window in panic. You're aware that you're beginning to lose your composure, but it will be worth it if you can just get this done.

“May I ask who's calling?”

“I'm CIA!” You yell into the handpiece. After a few endless moments, a familiar voice comes down the line.

“What is this?”

“Ittin! I'm CIA! Mayday! The flight plan I filed with the Agent, C, didn't list this! We're not flying so good!” You hear a groan from the other end.

“These people don't value human life like we do. You stay here, I'm in charge.”

You feel a wave of relief. With Ittin in charge everything will be ok. But what will he order you to do?

“Contact the other plane. Threaten to kill Pavel if they don't back off. If they can't grab your prize they should back off,” he tells you. Ittin's voice sounded a bit shaky, but this is a complex situation, so you can forgive him for that.

“Aye,” you respond. It's the first time you've ever said that. It must be that mercenary rubbing off on you. You desperately fiddle with the knobs, broadcasting on as many frequencies as you can, including all the ones they're likely to be using.

“This is Flight Zulu-Sierra-November-Victor-Bravo calling unidentified aircraft. We've got Dr Pavel on board and I've called Ittin, my superior at the CIA. He's authorised me to shoot him and then throw him out of the plane if necessary. I don't want to do that. So tell me, who are you?” You yell into the mouthpiece, trying as hard as possible to keep your voice calm and measured, like a good CIA operative.

After a few seconds of static, a connection is made. A voice, put through some kind of voice scrambler, can be heard.

“It doesn't matter who we are,” the voice says, “What matters is our plan.”

“Was getting Bane killed part of your plan?” you retort. Despite how painful that was, you still take some pride in being able to achieve something no other could.

“Of course not,” the voice admits, “but we need Pavel alive. Surrender him to us or we'll board you, take him by force, and then crash your plane.”

“You couldn't…”

“WITH NO SURVIVORS!”

But CIA will get addicted to morphine. He merely adopted the mask, but Bane was…actually Bane merely adopted the mask as well, so I guess it's okay.

 No.106126

You decide that trickery is the best tactic. Abandoning the radio, you stagger through the plane toward's Bane's corpse. After pausing for a moment to admire his ruggedly handsome features, you reach down to take off his mask. The edges are surprisingly sharp, and it takes a lot of force. The mask digs into your palms, cutting into your skin. You have squat right down, and get Smee and Maimen to help pull your arms. With the three of you pulling, the mask comes flying off, hitting you in the face. Blood trickles from your broken nose. You examine the mask in your hands. This deception had better work. Taking off that mask had been extremely painful for you.

You get back to the radio, and place the mask over your mouth and nose. Even through your bleeding nasal passages, you smell a delicate, sweet smell. The smell of sweat, dedication and determination. The scent of the man from whom you had ripped this mask.

Placing your regret aside, you speak into the radio.

"Shtand down, brothersh. The plane is now ours, with some shurvivors."

Your hands sweat as a few tense moments pass.

"Didn't you want us to crash the plane, with very few survivors?" a voice asks from the other plane.

What do you say to reassure the other plane?
