My concern is that had it flopped without the furor over the guy's race, then people would actually discuss and address the other aspects of the film where it may be lacking in. Now, if anything happens, you can bet these fuckers will pull a bioware/EA and play "blame the bigots" which will then be utilized as a means to push the idea that there is a race problem. The media and activists will have a field day. Rather, getting people to drop the movie for various issues all the while bringing up all the stupid shit Lucas has done to the series and all the unnecessary changes that have been made to the mythos would have been better and gone hand in hand with this campaign. That's all lost now. The studios knew damn well what they were doing by having one of the first faces in the first trailer be the black guy's and having pop up so suddenly all the while making the niggest facial expression possible. They knew it would draw an anal clench that would leave a black-hole jealous and trigger people. It's one big ruse and just like that hashtag that /pol/ got duped into trending, it will be utilized as an excuse to scream racism.
tl;dr: /pol/ got rused hard. Crashing the movie without losing their shit over race would have been better because Hollywood already thinks people are racist. If they realize they can't get people to react out in the open, they will give up like they did at one point. The media working hand in hand with them is the reason why they started up again. Disney already has so many Star Wars films in the works, they're overstretching the brand, saturating the market with it like Lucas tried to do with Ewoks back in the 80s.
Star Wars is a money-making machine largely because watching the first film seems to be a sacred experience for a lot of people. There's a magic to that film, and to the first trilogy in general, that later media have been hard-pressed to recapture.
That's what keeps pulling people back in for more. That old Star Wars magic.
This new movie isn't going to have that. Nor or any more of the sequels. And the more shitty sequels are put out, the more people come to associate them with "Star Wars".
The brand becomes primarily associated with the string of new films they're pumping out. People start losing interest. It's like what happened with the Simpsons - you keep constantly producing shitty episodes in a once-loved franchise, people just lose interest. They might still like the older, better episodes, but aren't going to line up for the new ones.
That's where Disney is taking Star Wars. Crashing the franchise with no survivors.
