Don't you hate it when you're just resting your head on a pillow and the next thing you realise is that several hours have past?

Back to booru, I might change the logo to simply "The Yellow Press" for consistency sake. Furthermore, changing the hyperlink names (e.g : posts ~> contributions) can be done with absolute ease from the locale file but the url they direct to remains the same regardless, can't seem to decide on which route to take.

On one hand, I could tinker with it further and change those as well -asuming I've got the basic understanding required to do so- On the other hand, I can keep them as is for the sake of consistency with other boorus and in the spirit of the shallowness that's to be expected from cheap journalism.

I don't really use boorus all that much so I've never seen such an image and I don't know where it is usually displayed. In the history page (e.g: https://yande.re/history) each post is assigned a quasi-unique colour to differentiate it from the rest, with the colour being defined as in pic related. How would I define it such that the resulting colour scheme doesn't look absolutely rancid on the background that I'm currently using? It kinda depends on the situation. I'd probably use the relative path for files in the same directory though, keeps things confined and less messy if you decide to rename it.

 No.3847

Oh, an addendum. Using an absolute path is better if either:

a. You don't know where the path is being accessed from (the working directory)

b. The path is being accessed from, or is designed to be accessed from, multiple or arbitrary working directories. (like a script that a user might run from wherever they want)

Although it may not always be possible to always use an absolute path in these situations you should if you can.

tl;dr: the worst two entities you'll ever deal with are your ISP and your bank.

It's been 2 months since I've contacted my ISP about changing my location and yet there is still no end in sight. I'm transferred from line to line and from waiting list to waiting list, "we'll be there by the end of the week" they claimed, over 5 weeks prior. My mobile data was entirely depleted about two weeks ago, and since it's the same provider, their incompetent staff couldn't extend my plan. They did however direct me towards their customer support phone line that was equally as incompetent and tried to sell me on the home internet plan I already have, without fulfilling the original purpose I contacted them for.

My bank has been fucking me over just as much, and had my account blocked ever since I returned back home two months ago. I've been attempting to get that resolved as well but as with my ISP, there is no end in sight.

If I didn't care for the people co-operating on this project, I'd get the hell out of here on the first departing flight, even if the destination was fucking Somalia.

Not that I'll ever study desgin.

The hardest part is choosing one of those thirty fucking screenshots man

Really

I'll just go with something plain enough I guess

Why then?

>is fun

>Akatsuki a cute

>art is amazing

<I am kinda scared I'll overhype it, so continue only if you're not convinced yet. Basically, stop reading this post and start watching the show the moment you are convinced enough, reading further than that won't do any good. Or at least skip to afterwards the greentext or something. Or just look at Akatsuki for the time being, that's all well as well.

>both distant cg and drawn characters still manage to look quite splendid

>nice pacing, little filler, stuff is happening all the time. You know, it feels like they thought they won't have time to cover everything in only 25 eps as opposed to dragging the story out so that it will fill up the episode quota

>Akatsuki a cute

>also sol stuff isn't in any way separated, like, having an episode of "life inside an mmorpg" in a story otherwise focused only on the plot, motive of life in an mmo is being explored as organically as it is possible, it's everpresent throughout the whole tale

>manipulation of tone is masterfully executed, it mixes seriousness, pure fun, kind vibes (does that even mean anything), cute stuff etc. in just the right ammounts so it never feels too serious or too dumb. Get the idea

>Akatsuki is the best ever character desing in history of Grand Nipponese Animated Entertainment. Or at least feels like it

>it made me, an otherwise not really critical of anything nutter, think of what makes a quality show only to be able to understand why do I like it that much

>although it's hard to tell not knowing the whole story, it seems the show wants to handle some interesting themes. So all you English majors rejoice, it's about your time to shine, innit?

>Shiroe, the MC, is fucking smart. He cannot even fight by himself, he chose some "enchanter" class that can do shit without a part. Heck, I don't want to spoil anything, but there's a moment when, how not to spoil too much…the show mocks something by Shiro realizing something. It's really good

>have I mentioned that the show looks good? The show looks good

>have I mentioned that Akatsuki looks good? Akatsuki looks good

>I dunno man, I know I don't have to look for anything to praise the show anymore, but it just feels like I am not doing it the justice

>it looks great, feels great, is great

Just go in it expecting the "stuck in mmorpg" setting done somewhat better.

That's what I did.

And I have absolutely no regrets about it.

Maybe just that it took me too much time since getting to know about it and actually giving it a try.

AAAAAAAAH I DON'T WANNA OVERHYPE IT BUT I WANNA PRAISE IT MORE ANYWAY.

Just go and watch it.

Well, it's just easier to create an interesting world and explain lots of occurences if it was formerly an mmorpg. You get all the flashy moves, so your characters doing unworldy shit cannot be at all challenged, levelling system which can make even a little girl beat up some big guys wow nice terminology there pel (kinda underused trope actually), you get all the fun stuff to experiment with like guilds, grind, zones, dungeons etc. being put into real life circumstances and many many more. Just think about it for a moment, all the possibillities mmorpg setting opens, its capability to explain, its relatability and its fun to use make it a great setting, actually superior to pure fantasy for some uses.

Isekai usually stress out the whole "oh man, stuck in the game/another world what do" thing too much desu. I like how they do it in Log Horizon, it totally skipped that part for mcs (the background characters still do that, but that's to be expected) and they're going straight into action, exploring how different their new world is like reasonable people. Of course they still go on about "when this was still a game" stuff all the time, but more as an alternative to saying "a time ago" really, like when recalling the good ol' times with the bunch or the different looks of a dungeon.

I'm way too excited about that show, but it just does that setting so well to my eyes and Akatsuki is cute.

Why do all the shows of this kind seem to have the problem of not focusing enough on the main cast? I know that writing a series of engaging scenarios for something power fantasy-esque might be challenging, but come on, I don't want to keep seeing those fucking kids. They were a neat addition, a nice break, the first time, but now their overly hyped up lessons on teamwork are nothing but dull. Maybe somewhat naive if anything.

It also seems so slow, especially in comparison with the rapid speed the development had near the beggining. But that may also be an effect of me deciding not to binge watch and limit myself to an ep a day. Maybe both.

I got you, it was something of a chore to get through that part. This show would be much better if they shortened this whole arc and made it 13ep-long instead of 25. But when it has a good episode, it's so great, sheer fun in form of animation.

I've just been taking it slow, one or few episodes every so often, basically, when I feel like it. That way its unfocused nature doesn't annoy nearly as much.

You should congratulate the episode for that btw. I'm the examiner.

Literally the exact opposite, a fantasy setting allows the author to have everything you described AND maintain a more logical and rigorous narrative as well.

Flashy moves and unworldy abominations? Incredibly talented individuals and the forces that be.

 No.4366

My phone fell while writing that, continuing from my previous post >>4365.

Guilds? Humans (humanoids) have sought companionship since ancient times, even more so under the harsh conditions such a reality would dictate.

Grind? Literally "training"

Zones? The world is full of diverse biomes and rich convoluted legends.

Dungeons? See above, also driven further by the mysticism of the fantasy elements.

Explaining your setting with a healthy dose of magic, legends, and mysticism is far and wide superior to the "dude, VIDEO GAME" approach. Your pushing your suspension of disbelief way beyond the scope of reality if you try to pull it off.

>Who in their right minds would've wasted their time on this bullcrap?

>Why has this mechanic only recently been brought up to our characters attentions?

>Who even designed this piece of shit?

>There is no way in hell the playerbase wasn't outraged by how unbalanced everything is.

I regret not being able to phrase myself properly but I've been meaning to call you out on that for a while and I've ran out of patience on raging out on a proper keyboard.

>I regret not being able to phrase myself properly

Not at all, I get you.

Well, having read your post two or three times, I don't think I can find any fault with it. You're right, it is easier to explain anything in a fantasy setting as opposed to an mmorpg.

I'll go beyond that and give an example: the game they are playing in Log Horizon, Eldertale(s?), which was created in 1998 (pic related) Side note: if I am not wrong, the action of the story takes place roughly now, by that I mean 2018. I recall that it was said the game is 20 years old., has a complete map of one forth of size of our planet's surface (every distance is half as long as it is in real life). However cool that sounds like, it's terrible from a game design point of view, innit? Unless they planned ahead on adding stuff all over the world during the lifetime of the game, it'd just be a Daggerfall-like nothingness or Fallout 1/2 wasteland, but without the quick travel mechanic those were based on. And a plan like that would rely on this game actually being succesful at launch without really much to do in the majority of the game's area… That was one sizeful digression, back to the point.

I agree with you on pretty much all the fields, but I wouldn't phrase

>Explaining your setting with a healthy dose of magic, legends, and mysticism is far and wide superior to the "dude, VIDEO GAME" approach.

the same way. You know, the first part of that sentence could be replaced with "dude, MAGIC" or something similliar. I'd say most of the popular settings in literature could be explained in similliar manner. You have your science-fiction's "dude, SCIENCE", your typical horror's "dude, GHOSTS" or maybe some "dude, CURSES", ancient greek "dude, GODS", your romantic "dude, LOVE". Ok, that one's more of a plot archetype than a setting, but you get the point I'm making.

I guess the popularity of mmorpg isekai comes down to one word: 'relatability' if that's even a word that is. You get modern human protagonists who (mostly) behave much like, well, modern human beings. Just isekai does that too, the difference being, in an mmorpg the whole fantasy world may be relatable, still remaining somewhat mysterious. Viewers, or readers, probably know what an mmorpg is and likely played one or at least tried, so they will be senpaiilliar with the core concepts, they will feel like they know what is going on. Additionally, if they have fond view on mmo's they will start of with a fond view on your world. This way you sacrifice some mystery though, as even if you add a twist (in case of Log Horizon, they got stuck on the day of some expansion) it will never be as unknown as a proper fantasy setting.

Plus, it's a relatively new idea, something that works and is different. A breath of fresh air. This kinda thing blows, tons of stuff is being made, followed after some time by people being annoyed with the quantity of it, in turn making it fade away. Unless it doesn't, see the whole fantasy and science-fiction genre. But it's not like I've been there, seen that or anything. Just my thoughts.

I like discussion, it makes me challenge my opinions and create new ones. Without discussion my opinion rarely ever changes and if it does, it's a slow process. When someone actually points out a flaw in your view, you immedietaly adjust it and can test its viability right on the spot, it's a big loop of improving your thoughts on whatever it is you're talking about. Or at least it's that for me.

I digress way too much, eh? And sorry for the chaos in my post(s). I try to keep at least some order, but it's hard to fight with the nature of how I… discuss? Dunno how to call that. Nevermind, you hopefully get at least majority of what I'm struggling to convey.

Damn it's hard to stop at times.

You're being unjustly harsh towards the series by criticising its "quarter of the earth" map size. Considering thay it's a 20 year old MMO, most of that terrain is probably the product of years upon years of constant expansions. I haven't seen Log Horizon and I'm unlikely to do so in the foreseeable future so I'm not certain if this is clarified in the exposition or not.

I probably should've phrased myself better instead of dissing "isekai" in general since the idea of traversing other realms is a staple of literature since time immemorial. The "dude, VIDEO GAME" was just letting out some steam regarding how trashy the genre seems to be.

On a semirelated note, I tried to come up with an isekai story that I'd find interesting, under the strict condition that it'd have to involve some sort of game. Isekai can be entertaining if the characters are given some sense of helplessness or injustice being done upon them, not necessarily but it creates a motive for the characters' actions that isn't "that's just how life is going to be, I guess".

I imagined an entity (a deity, a dark lord, an abyssmal being, it matters not) or group thereof, who snatch the souls of mortals from their realities and leads them to a domain they reign supreme, to participate in a "game" they control, for purposes ranging from nefarious plans to release ancient evils unspeakable to unfettered gambling between the deities and the sinister madness of beings all-powerful and everything inbetween. The characters could be anything from mighty warriors stolen from the eternal of death to individuals whom the gods have been messing with all their lives such that have become a toy in their hands (even more so than the rest of the participants).

You CAN add a modern relatable character if it fits your creative vision, but that remains up to anyone who'd bother with such a concept to decide. When trying to shoe horn John Doe into the story, I came up with the idea of a human brought in as a joke or bet amongst the gods, to see how long he'd be able to survive and/or be entertained by the suffering he'd be forced to endure. To bring him up to par with the rest of the competition, you can have one deity pity them (pity is most definitely not the correct term, but I don't believe a word exists that can describe the thought process I'm envisioning) and cheat on their behalf, granting them boons to aid them topple their adversaries. They could be desiring to have the underdog smash the opposition to spite their compatriots, or to give John Doe some sense of hope before taking delight in snatching it away and enjoying the suffering that ensues.

Again, fuck banks and fuck phones.

Well, I am not sure if they ever stated whether they started off with the whole world being in game or did it through expansions. I am assuming the first one, in which case, while I understand that the game now would be rather neatly filled with stuff, it certainly wouldn't have been on launch. Now thinking about it that way though, maybe they just had good marketing team that based their advertising on promising to fill the world. Then that'd make some sense.

Yeah, I get you. I really wanted to write "dude, MAGIC" though.

Your idea I am too tired as of now to respond too, my eyes are playing tricks on me, will read on tomorrow.

Also, everytime anyone uses the term "John Doe", this guy is what I see.

I was sure I had a picture of him. Guess it's either not there or in some random place.

Fuck them indeed.

The idea isn't half-bad. If I understand correctly, it'd basically be an iseaki horror, right? Wonder if there are any iseaki horrors actually, don't think I've heard about one yet.

Also, expanding the previous argument, I have totally forgotten about the thing with fantasy worlds that function alike mmorpgs. See Goblin Slayer and… eh, what was it called… anyway, maybe I'll recall it later. This kind of approach is a pretty nice compromise I think, not having to worry about the "game" being realistic in that people play it, while still being able to experiment with the mmo tropes.

Goblin Slayer in general has an abundance of interesting ideas actually, that's for a side note. And to compliment that I am posting the most staple, generic line of its dialogue I could. (I'm not telling you you are hopeless)

I'd also have a semirelated topic, what do you think about power fantasy? As in, is it good, is it bad, is it neither etc. etc.

 No.4375

>>4374

Not horror per-se. I'm trying to come up with an alternative description so bear with me on this one.

Imagine a classical fantasy setting and add in the Daedric lords as the ancient evil threat that exists beyond reality itself. The characters, having been abducted from their true realms, strive to return but few are fortunate enough to make it back. Plenty of them have given up hope and settled in with the "I guess that's how life's going to be from now on" mentality while others remain ever vigilant. The Daedric lords pop in from time to time, to create chaos and savour the suffering of mortals, or to thwart the efforts of their brethren.

Power fantasy can be suitable method of storytelling if you're merely striving to entertain the audience without any long term commitment, its plot cannot sustain its own scale for any extended period of time.

I believe that an audiences attention can be easily grabbed through the means of "subvert and surpass", you either introduce a senpaiiliar concept and subvert all expectations, or surpass expectations by dialing it all the way up to eleven, or doing a continuous combination of both. If a power fantasy doesn't escalate fast enough, it runs the risk of losing the audiences interest as the protagonists' struggles don't seem far off from what they've surpassed earlier. On the flip side, if you keep escalating your story to maintain the momentum, you'll eventually hit the wall where there are no threats that your characters cannot surpass.

Sorry for the terrible formatting, phones suck.
