Upstate NY here. There's a fair number of big girls in this area. They're about half-"country" girls (who usually want a fit-as-fuck country guy, although some end up setting for less than their ideal), quarter SJW chicks, and quarter other shit (fat ghetto black girls are fairly common in upstate cities).
Country girls aren't half-bad, but they tend to pretty much require you to be deeply grained in their subculture. Many of the single ones have relatively low intelligence and mental disorders aren't that uncommon, but they're usually not that terrible.
SJWs are, well, SJWs. As the Fat Acceptance thing has gained traction, so has the prevalence of SJWism in bigger girls. This is usually due to them feeling a need for belonging, so they go to the worst possible group for that belonging. They usually are total head cases, even excluding their political/social viewpoints. As it turns out, the stereotypes are usually true. "Problem glasses", hair dyed weird colors, and "artsy" tattoos are usually indicators of this mindset in women. tl;dr version is avoid. If one talks to you first, they may not be an SJW, so approach with caution.
The last group of girls is more or less a grab bag. They're otherwise similar to skinny girls, but, for whatever reason, ended up putting on a lot of weight. You'll get the noisy ghetto black women (some fat black girls are actually pretty good people, though, this is pretty easy to determine early on), the girls who are ingrained in rock/metal culture (Generally okay people if they're not SJWs), the 'nerdy' (for lack of a better term) chubby girls (finding one that partakes in her interests out of genuine love for said interest and that isn't a raging SJW is like hitting the damn lottery), and plenty of other smaller subcategories that I'm missing.
To answer your question more directly, areas with lower incomes (e.g. inner cities) are more likely to have higher populations of fat people, although they're often the kind you don't want to deal with. Country areas tend to have a fair number of fat girls due to a combination of that subculture encouraging unhealthy eating and expecting men to do all of the intensive labor. Suburban areas tend to have the the highest amount of skinny people, due to higher wages and more free time meaning healthier eating and more time to exercise.
That girl you used probably falls into category #2. Damn shame.
