Freedom of speech means the government can't arrest you for expressing opinions. You have a right to say that Muslims are disgusting goatfuckers (regardless of how factual such a statement is) and others have just as much of a right to say you're kind of a jackass for expressing that publicly.

You can't use "free speech" to avoid criticism because it makes the assumption that the person criticizing you has less of a right to speech than you do.
