TSOI does deal with mortality and the idea of immortality (though the cost is too great to bear), as well as HPL’s desire to connect with the past, since the protagonist is able to meet with distant generations when he eventually takes to the sea, which it is implied he will do.

The only French Lovecraft devotee I know of is Michel Houllebecq (who is also a noted critic of Mohammedanism), which has made him somewhat of a persona non grata. I got two books by Thomas Ligotti in the mail the other day – he is frequently claimed to write in the same style as HPL, and in any case he has written pastiches of Lovecraftian horror which are said to be good.

I will look into the author you mentioned; it is hard to find anyone who can pull off cosmic horror correctly. Been thinking about checking out Who Goes There?, which Carpenter’s The Thing is an adaption of.

I find it very easy to differentiate between a celeb's physical attractiveness and mental attractiveness/intelligence. Like a band with political/social leanings that I disagree with - I can still appreciate the music if it's good.

 No.3505

>>3502

Trust me, I agree with you on that. The thing is, some things are such massive turnoffs that they ruin any attractiveness left. I see her and all I see is someone who did a sex scene with a nigger. Any halo she ever had has now vanished, she doesn't have "it" anymore. To me, someone who does that has no self-respect, and the lack of it is one of the most repugnant traits imaginable. This is not a matter of separating the art from the artist. This is not a matter of the artist's personal life, but of the artist's art itself. She's a Democrat, feminist (even if it's mostly posturing and it's lukewarm af), liberal and we don't care. But this crosses the line. We're disgusted by her for the same reason the town's bicycle disgusts most guys. She's lowered herself in our eyes, she's become nasty stuff.

Previous thread: >>40

After 600+ posts discussing films & TV shows (amongst other things), it is time to celebrate the new year and a new muse with a brand new thread!

The /bestemma/ Film Club will (hopefully) continue soon, and we have the following films planned so far:

Sexykiller, morirás por ella (2008)

2019, After the Fall of New York (1983)

We Are the Flesh (2016)

Las brujas de Zugarramurdi aka Witching & Bitching (2013)

The Black Gloves (2017)

La polizia incrimina, la legge assolve (1973)

If all goes well, we will also revisit David Lynch & Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks, and do an indept, episode by episode discussion of the show, like we did with the first season of Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens.

>She was born to play weirdos, TBH.

Absolutely. She is definitely in her right element when she portrays dark, disturbed characters it seems; she effortlessly pulls off the glamorous diva look, that also works perfectly for those kind of characters – everything from sweet and fun-loving to deeply disturbed and dark.

Might as well wrap things up with Sexykiller… Really enjoyed the film – it is a fun dark comedy that manages to blend horror and comedy surprisingly well, and doesn’t take itself seriously or force the comedy by making the characters act like idiots, which is something Scream Queens is guilty of. And speaking of Scream Queens – the amount of similarities between this film and that show is crazy; I would be surprised if Murphy & Co., weren’t inspired by it when they made SQ. Macarena clearly had a lot of fun with this role, which I already knew going in after seeing her talk about it in a YT video before the premiere of the film.

A nice and fun throwback to 1980s style horror comedies with a perfect mix of the two genres – stylish and entertaining.

Definitely a 👍 from me.

Since /tv/ rarely discuss cinema anymore, can we talk about underrated mafia kinos? if it not okay with Refn, he can delete the thread. Anyways if it's alright with you, I recommend you pic related, a comfy comedic take on mafia movies by John Huston. Kathleen Turner is fantastic in it (although that's a given, what an actress), kinda parodying her famous role in Body Heat. Whole movie is a cheeky parody of mafia movies and it keeps the intrigue until the end. I don't know why it sits with a 6.8 on imdb, guess plebs can't appreciate true kino.

>heist films

Most of those doesn't work for me either. I like the new The Italian Job for example, that's an okay flick, but most of the times, these are all the same.

Another genre I can't understand is spy movies. I saw the last theatrically released movie of Philip Seymour Hoffman, that was a spy movie, but not like a James Bond-movie, like a real-life spy organisation. And it was incredibly dull...

 No.3398

I love Scarface and Brian De Palma, and it's top tier neon noir/film soleil, but didn't mention it because I thought OP meant mafia as in Italian mafia, and Scarface is mostly about Cubans (as well as Carlito's Way, another essential film soleil starring Dunkaccino). Same reason I didn't mention Blow (and because it has a certain persona non grata in it).

As for heist films, you can't miss Reservoir Dogs and Ronin as well. I like that you already mentioned both of Mann's heist classics.

some more movies I forgot to mention for those wanting more commercial films:

The Day of the Beast was an amusing film featuring satanic teams and a mixture of genres

Alejandro Amenábar made some good films before exposing himself as a hack, Thesis is a solid, low budget thriller, Open Your Eyes is a good sci-fi movie (Vanilla Sky is a remake of this one, but the original is better imo), and The Others with Nicole Kidman, it might have anglo actors but it's still a spanish production.

Torrente was an hilarious portrayal of an out of touch fascist cop, he's one of the most beloved characters in Spain. There are like 6 films but I only can recommend the first one and maybe the second.

Cell 211 is an entertaining prison flick

[Rec] if you want a horror movie. The genre has never been my cup of tea

Timecrimes is a very divisive movie, mix of sci-fi and thriller. Some love it, some hate it. I haven't seen it

Blancanieves (Snow White) was the spanish equivalent of The Artist, trying to cash in the silent film revival. Not that commercial but hey. Haven't seen it either

The Method was an entertaining and original film

The Miracle of P. Tinto if you want a weird comedy/fantasy movie. You might like it if you like Tim Burton

Airbag is a film reminiscent of 90s Tarantino/Rodriguez

I leave it at there, maybe the other spanish anon can fill in the gaps

José María Forqué has a lot of great, varied movies. I really like his comedy Atraco a las tres (Robbery at 3 o'clock, 1962). Perhaps you would enjoy some of José Luís Sáenz de Heredia's movies and documentaries, too.

>maybe the other Spanish anon can fill in the gaps

Are you kidding? Those are some really nice, informative posts! There's not much I can add to what you said, I'm afraid. If anything it is I who would need further guidance in the matter. Only now and then I stumble across some gems that challenge my mostly negative perception of recent Spanish cinema; I guess that makes two of us. Don't get me wrong, the average production value is high, and there's a big pool of competent actors too—Hell, some of them can even speak clearly so you don't need subtitles to understand what they say—but most of what gets promoted nowadays are Hollywood-tier formulaic drama and thriller/action. Besides, I can't stand their feminist bullshit and political bickering in general.

If we're talking about classics, I'd like to mention a few that I enjoyed, like Carlos Saura's La caza (The Hunt, 1965), Peppermint frappé (1967), Cría cuervos (1976)—thinly-veiled criticism of Franco's regime here and there, but I don't feel it detracts from their artistic prowess and merits one bit. There's also José Luís Borau's "Furtivos" (1975); and José Luís Garci's Volver a empezar (Begin the Beguine, 1982).

>Luís Buñuel, Spirit of the Beehive, The South, The Holy Innocents.

I fully agree with you.

she's a professional actress and had to make her directors/writers happy. Doing an interracial scene is a sacrifice comparable to Christian Bale yo-yoing weight through various roles. She's the actress of this generation, I think she can be excused. Film is not real. Stop bullying her. She's still Best Emma and you know it

He's probably never going to dump her even if she legit cucks him in person because let's face it, he's never going to do better than Emma Roberts (very few can, really). It's not even a slight against him here, but "Who is Evan Peters?" is what most people would ask if you said his name.

Funny that you say that, the most common comment I come across on the topic is that "he could do much better" (likely from jealous women, but that's another matter, the point that those exist just proves there's droves of women lusting after him).

I think he's too weak to leave her.

Sad, if true! It is not as bad as being an actual cuck, but still pretty bad.

And he can do better than R*berts tbh; any girl who hasn’t taken the black (or been harvested).

Few stars have been involved in so much baneposting as our muse. I'll start the thread with one of the subtler and most glorious baneposts she's ever done, on Nerve. There's spoilers in the second webm, the first one doesn't reveal anything that the trailer didn't.

<Oh, you think acting is your ally. But you merely adopted the acting; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the world outside a film set until I was already a woman, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!

<The films betray you, because they belong to me!

I know what BO has said about messing with movies being like "spraying graffitti on a Michelangelo", but I hope this pleases him.

I love your movies BO.

I wish that was my movie, but I'm not Refn as I've said countless times.

I wish I was the modern Friedkin like Refn undoubtedly is.

That baneposting edit does please me though :^)

Why sell yourself short now? (((Friedkin))) is overrated as fuck, and The Exorcist one of the most overrated films in history.

You might be right about The Exorcist but To Live and Die in L.A. is an absolute classic.

2OO1 is the overrated one, Kubrick was a hack.

>A masked man with a plan

>A doctor who “Told them nothing”

🤔

The Oblong Box was originally to be directed by auteur Michael Reeves, who fell ill and died only twenty-five-years old. Reeves had just finished filming the surprise box-office success Witchfinder General (known in the US as The Conqueror Worm), also starring Price, Rupert Davies & Hilary Dwyer, and Price would have played the Markham brothers as twins in Reeves’ version. After Reeves became ill during pre-production, Gordon Hessler (and Christopher Wicking) “stepped in and made a number of substantial changes”, including giving it a “pro-black” message; negatively portraying the British Empire’s colonization of Africa and “exploitation of natives”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oblong_Box_%28film%29#Production

I, for one, would have loved to see Reeves original vision of the film, with Price playing the two roles – something he had also done in Roger Corman’s brilliant The Haunted Palace (1963). Still, with the exception of Hessler’s changes, and the niggers who appear in the film, one of which is a sailor in a tavern cosying to a white bar floozy/prostitute, the film is well worth a watch IMHO.

Vincent Price & Christopher Lee only have one 30 second scene together ;_;
