>I read it more as a character study of her in particular rather than an indictment of youth in general.

People online were cheering her on, encouraging her and coming up with suggestions on what to do next. I took it as a comment that people online have become desensitised to violence and the plights of others, or that we only reveal our true selves when we are anonymous.

<“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”

<— Oscar Wilde

There is a moment in the trailer when the mask she wore at the beginning suddenly appears on her face again – I forget when this happens in the film though. I think that hiding behind anonymity online and drive for likes on social media are key to the film.

Two other scenes of note that I would like to hear how you two interpreted:

She is looking up at the night-sky and he hear this breathing sound and see the spirals from the motel room blend with the night-sky. The swirls in the clouds reminded me of Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting ‘The Starry Night’. The subtitles read ‘(bizarre music) (static humming)’ as we cut to a shot of the collection of old analogue TVs stacked on top of each other, and Kiya and Marshall sitting close by, around a bonfire in the forest.

Then there is the scene where she is alone with the pet rat, sitting next to the TV (showing snow) on the floor with a phone. Before this it seemed like she was starting to show regret and as she waits for someone on the other end to pick up, nervousness. She hangs up the phone as she hears sirens.

>>535

I swear you two are making me look like a troglodyte who just loves to watch the pretty colours on the screen and ramble on endlessly as I try to make head and/or tails of what I’ve just seen.

‘Valhalla Rising’ blew me away when I first saw it on TV. I have seen it quite a few times now, thrice on Blu-ray after I bought it. NWR changed a lot of things from the script as per usual I think, but like with ‘The Neon Demon’, you can see and deduce some of the things that were originally planned. I have an above average interest in Norse mythology and the Icelandic sagas, so I think I recognise quite a few themes and parallels to those in the film, probably from the original script written by my fellow countryman, Roy Jacobsen.

I have no fucking clue what ‘A Field in England’ was about though – that film is such an incredible mindfuck I felt like I had dropped acid with Barry Nyle whilst watching it, though hopefully the effects of it are less severe and not as long-term. It is absolutely stunning to look at though, and the scene where Whitehead emerges from the tent was pretty damn eerie.

>People online were cheering her on...

iirc there were also people calling her sick and condemning her etc.

>I took it as a comment that people online have become desensitised to violence and the plights of others, or that we only reveal our true selves when we are anonymous.

I agree that this seems to be a point made.

>as we cut to a shot of the collection of old analogue TVs stacked on top of each other, and Kiya and Marshall sitting close by, around a bonfire in the forest.

It just struck me, and this could be a reach. Isn't passive tv watching often regarded as a modern form of watching flames flicker? A semi-hypnotic state? The static hum, the crackle and pop as the wood burns.

>Then there is the scene where she is alone with the pet rat, sitting next to the TV (showing snow) on the floor with a phone. Before this it seemed like she was starting to show regret and as she waits for someone on the other end to pick up, nervousness. She hangs up the phone as she hears sirens.

Was this when she was waiting for the motel owner to come to her door? I need to look through movie again.

>iirc there were also people calling her sick and condemning her etc.

I think those were in the minority though. However, it is interesting that her most outspoken critic shows his face and name, while she remains anonymous, even using her screen-name IRL.

>It just struck me, and this could be a reach. Isn't passive tv watching often regarded as a modern form of watching flames flicker? A semi-hypnotic state? The static hum, the crackle and pop as the wood burns.

It does sound like it could be a further hint that Kiya is autistic. Isn’t a fascination with snow/static something that is associated with autism?

>Was this when she was waiting for the motel owner to come to her door?

It is after Marshall gets beats her up and escapes. She lies in the bathtub, and then she sits alone in the motel room with the TV and the phone - her lip is cracked and she is bruised/has a black eye. I thought she wanted to reach out to her family or a friend/friends - if she even have any.

>He'd be perfect for that creepy vibe.

Indeed! His university friend, Wilhelm, comments on it in the film, saying he has a dual personality, and wonders which one is the ‘real’ him. It is really a very good dark comedic take on the Frankenstein story, complete with the look and feel of a Hammer horror film.

I think this is exactly what Tim Burton was aiming for with his ‘Sleepy Hollow’. He failed though, since he tried to combine the horror and the comedic too much. I think that if it had been made in the early 1970s, and Ralph Bates had played Ichabod, not as a cowardly dandy, but with the same persona he used as baron Victor Frankenstein, it would have been good. I can easily picture Bates’ Ichabod using the Young Masbath as a human shield upon entering the witch’s house in the woods, not because he is a coward, but because he lacks any compassion for his fellow man.

>I got around to watching Where Eagles Dare. Far too much shooting and bombing and entirely too little Ingrid Pitt.

Oh, fiddlesticks! I was hoping you would like it. I was entertained the whole through it myself – it is a very tense film, from the very beginning when they parachute out of the plane, begin to suspect sabotage, and then of course, the entire part in the castle. Alistair MacLean is great at writing these tense, nerve-racking scenes, and this is my favourite of his.

But as you say, the film could certainly do with more Ingrid Pitt – but then again, that is always the case IMHO.

Wow what a dick. This looks like a good watch. I noticed the Dean is James Cossins who I just saw a couple of weeks ago in The Anniversary with Bette Davis. He was very good in that. The movie itself is rather pathological.

>Oh, fiddlesticks! I was hoping you would like it.

Most of it had me engaged. It was the extended shooting for like 20 minutes escape type part that just did my head in. The constant barrage of loud noises put me off I realise how autistic that is.

>But as you say, the film could certainly do with more Ingrid Pitt – but then again, that is always the case IMHO.

And yet, he doesn’t surpass Cushing in ‘Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed’ when it comes to evil. Cushing was an ice cold psychopath in that film – Bates’ Frankenstein at least tries to keep a façade of pleasantries and normalcy, while Cushing resorts to blackmail and even rape. The rape scene was the idea of Hammer head honcho Sir James Carreras, who thought the film had to be sexed-up – the director and Cushing and Carlson were all against it and hated the idea.

Still, it is a very good film, and one of the tensest scenes must have been a nod to Hitchcock’s ‘Rear Window’.

>Most of it had me engaged. It was the extended shooting for like 20 minutes escape type part that just did my head in. The constant barrage of loud noises put me off I realise how autistic that is.

Well, I am glad to hear that you liked most of it.

Have you seen any more films with Ingrid Pitt? I think I have only seen her in three so far: The Vampire Lovers, Countess Dracula and Where Eagles Dare.

Btw., I saw some BTS photos from the set of The Vampire Lovers yesterday, and Cushing looked absolutely smitten with her.

No, other than The Wicker Man but that was years before I knew who she was. Going to have to watch that one again. She pops up for a split second in the beginning of this trailer. I found an online copy of Underworld [Transmutations], a Clive Barker movie here https://hooktube.com/watch?v=r2uBj24UIXw

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but that is pretty damned good.

Raga Rockers is actually quite mainstream here, ‘Noen å hate’ (lit. ‘somebody to hate’) is still being played on the radio quite regularly. The lyrics are pretty edgy and satirical, talking about how lovely it is to have someone to hate, and to beat them up, listen to the sound of their bones breaking and flesh tearing – very 1990s grunge rock.

Here is rock/folk music band from my neck of the woods:

>Spanish is a very pleasant language to listen to – very musical; same as Italian.

You'd be surprised by how hard it is to give Spanish the right phonetics when singing to avoid it sounding harsh. The song I posted is an example, he softens the strong R to a point that would earn you a visit to the speech therapist as a kid in elementary school.

> I wonder how Norwegian sounds to someone who doesn’t speak the language…

Pretty cool, I like it quite a bit. Definitely softer than German. Sometimes it sounds oddly similar to Japanese to the untrained ear (like mine).

>I wasn’t sure what to expect, but that is pretty damned good.

You were right about not knowing what to expect, lol. I'm glad you liked it. Buitres is one of the few decent mainstream rock bands here. Most "rock" bands here aren't true rock, they're mostly ska combined with even worse trash like murga or candombe, local carnival genres mostly popular in Montevideo (the capital city), specially among leftists.

Some other mainstream decent bands are Doberman (besides their original songs, they have a fantastic cover of Highway to Hell, see https://www.hooktube.com/watch?v=5rP3y2CVP4U The singer is one of the best in the whole country), La Trampa, Snake (I don't like it much, but it's better than most stuff out there. Also they made a song inspired by the short film Ataque de pánico, directed by Fede Álvarez, who also directed the music video for the song. That short was his way to Hollywood, where he directed Evil Dead and Don't Breathe. He's now directing The Girl In The Spider's Web. I can't comment much on his work because I only watched the short. He's very competent when it comes to special effects but I don't know if his films have much substance.), Hereford.

It is long overdue: a thread for the discussion of past, present and future films, TV shows (and music) featuring our beloved muse.

‘SCRE4M’, the fourth instalment in the slasher comedy series, the two seasons of Ryan Murphy’s clever horror/slasher comedy (and whodunit) show ‘Scream Queens’, the beautiful drama thriller ‘Nerve’, the star-packed dark comedy ‘We’re the Millers’ & the hit show ‘American Horror Story’ have all been talked about in the Best Emma Generals over at /tv/, but we have of course only scratched the surface so far.

Also, best Emma is scheduled to appear in no less than five films in 2018:

In a Relationship

Billionaire Boys Club

Little Italy

Paradise Hills – the directorial feature film debut of award-winning short film director Alice Waddington

Anya’s Ghost – an adaptation of the graphic novel from 2011 by Vera Brosgol. Emma is cast as Emily, the ghost Anya befriends.

BREAKING NEWS

<EXCLUSIVE: Resident Evil franchise star Milla Jovovich, Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia 2, War Horse), and Awkwafina (Ocean’s Eight, Crazy Rich Asians) are heading to Paradise Hills, the sci-fi thriller from first-time director Alice Waddington. The group joins Emma Roberts, Eiza Gonzalez, and Danielle Macdonald in the film, which is currently shooting in Spain.

Few stars have been involved in so much baneposting as our muse. I'll start the thread with one of the subtler and most glorious baneposts she's ever done, on Nerve. There's spoilers in the second webm, the first one doesn't reveal anything that the trailer didn't.

<Oh, you think acting is your ally. But you merely adopted the acting; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the world outside a film set until I was already a woman, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!

<The films betray you, because they belong to me!

Alternate version, HD in the link

my.mixtape.moe/rxrnyd.mp4

They only differ from 3:35 onwards.

Music is better synced to the action, and the ending varies a little (but it's a huge improvement in my opinion). Sometimes one resists cutting footage to the detriment of the piece of work and I feel like this was the case. I removed only a few seconds but like the final result a lot more.

You spoil us with all this OC, BO.

Dunno why, but the video reminded me of the dashcam video of the cops chasing the 'ghost car'. The audio from that video made it to Kavinsky's Pacific Coast Highway: https://hooktube.com/watch?v=-5FKNViujeM

Wow, I didn't know that backstory. Just watched the thing, pretty interesting.

In my case, after I made the "ultimate cut", or alternate version, it reminded me of some Vanishing Point version where the Challenger vanishes in thin air just before hitting the bulldozers or the Charger, becoming a reddish light as if it went through some portal. But the spooky thing is, I went back to the movie to see it and post it, and it didn't happen. So I either manufactured a false memory or saw some alternate version of it. I seemed to recall this happening in the first part of the movie and then in the ending the true fate of the driver is revealed, but I was wrong. I also seem to remember some scenes with the Challenger and Charger playing chicken and disappearing instead of crashing. Maybe I'm confusing it with another film. I looked at videos from the 1997 remake but it wasn't there either. So I don't know what to make of it.

Turns out I was wrong but not completely wrong. After searching a bit on the internet I could find the exact scene - skipping frames on VLC had led me nowhere and fortunately I found discussions about that scene. And it wasn't the Charger. I saw the film like three years ago and evidently the memories got fuzzy.

So the Challenger vanishes, but the whole context was wrong.

This mythical being is part of the extended Scream Queens Universe. She only exists in the mind of the Red Devil, as part of his hallucinations during weed and alcohol of questionable quality induced psychotic episodes. Early exposure to moonshine in Pennsylvania might have played a role in this too. She's allegedly the reason why the Red Devil continues killing even after he stops getting orders from the sister of the girl who cared after the bathtub baby.

I don’t think we should completely rule out brain damage from the time he was the victim of a ‘one-sided physical altercation’ with Kelly as a cause for his hallucinations and delusions.

<NWR: It was actually much more exciting at the BBC…

<VICE: What happened there?

<NWR: Well, apparently... in fact, let me get Donna. Donna!

<VICE: I think this studio might be soundproof…

<NWR: Really? [pauses] DONNA! [Donna the PR lady comes in] Donna, can you tell Louisa the story of what happened this morning?

<Donna, the PR lady: Ah. Well, we went on BBC Breakfast, and Nicolas had never seen it before. So, on the way there we said, “Nicolas, this is early morning entertainment, you have to be very well behaved.”

<NWR: And I was…

<Donna: And Carey Mulligan, who was there as well said, “Nicolas, you have to be very well behaved.”

<NWR: And I was!

<Donna: But you said "fuck", Nicolas.

<NWR: The presenter goes like, “So how do you do this action, it suddenly comes out of nowhere?” And I said, “Well, it’s like fucking.”

<Donna: I’d never seen Bill and Sian look so…Anyway, you can imagine, we had to turn it around pretty quickly. Carey basically did the rest of the interview.

<NWR: I mean, I thought the UK was supposed to be more liberal about this kind of stuff than the States.

<VICE: I think we are, just maybe not before breakfast.

<NWR: I guess so.

I think she just really loves that SUV.

She has (or had) a Ford Mustang, a Mercedes-Benz G500, a Mini Clubman. She also had a dark gray Range Rover at some point and has a newer one now.

I'm guessing she ditched the G500 because they're pretty awful to drive on the pavement and not very comfortable even if they are badass and classy.
