TSOI does deal with mortality and the idea of immortality (though the cost is too great to bear), as well as HPL’s desire to connect with the past, since the protagonist is able to meet with distant generations when he eventually takes to the sea, which it is implied he will do.

The only French Lovecraft devotee I know of is Michel Houllebecq (who is also a noted critic of Mohammedanism), which has made him somewhat of a persona non grata. I got two books by Thomas Ligotti in the mail the other day – he is frequently claimed to write in the same style as HPL, and in any case he has written pastiches of Lovecraftian horror which are said to be good.

I will look into the author you mentioned; it is hard to find anyone who can pull off cosmic horror correctly. Been thinking about checking out Who Goes There?, which Carpenter’s The Thing is an adaption of.

Whew! Everything went better than expected!

This board didn't originate from a vacuum.

To know its backstory, you can dive into the /bestemma/ lore:

There's no need to mess with your router mate, just change the network connection settings in your computer.

I tried that as well :( ip4 and ip6, ipconfig dns flush and everything.

Are you sure the DNSs you picked are reachable and working? Also make sure you only add DNSs without altering your IP configuration. Don't try to enter the same IP you have manually if it's dynamic. Let DHCP handle that.

Left IP untouched, only tried DNS. Tried the google ones, some other ones being posted, and open dns ones at different times.

open dns worked for threads already open but trying to refresh catalogue pages just resulted in the same bullshit "took too long to respond" the isp put in place.

I'm fairly tech illiterate so I imagine it's some simple thing I've missed. It's moments like these that I wish I had spent years learning some of this to be prepared.

Weird. Try these from verisign:

Welcome to the /bestemma/ re-view/review of David Lynch & Mark Frost’s iconic TV show Twin Peaks. Today is 24 February, the same date as the opening of the Pilot (Northwest Passage), so what better way to kick off this journey back to arguably the best TV show in the world?

This show is more about the journey than the destination, and most spoilers are fine, but use the spoiler function if you feel it would give away too much to first-time viewers.

Watched this one last night. Of course the novelty of the opening has worn off by now, and being a shorter episode there's of course a lot less to discuss. I keep chuckling when I see "McGill" in the opening though, I can't help thinking of Saul Goodman. However, the episode itself is no less impressive.

I love how surreal that first scene was, from the workout to Dale's concerns.

Audrey annoys me to no end (in an amusing way), she's slutty but not really sexy, she would really rub me the wrong way.

Bobby's cockiness is funny, he acts as if he wasn't even a suspect in a murder.

James is such a fool, he keeps drawing targets on himself.

Isn't it weird that the pendant said "best friends"?

Also I don't know how Shelly ended up with Leo, but what an asshole he is. And I'm sure he's implicated in the crimes. The truck in the escort book, the money, the bloody shirt? Too much to be a coincidence.

What are Bobby and Mike involved in with Leo? Their conversation sounded rather shady. Why did Laura have the 10k?

I also feel bad for Donna but at the same time I don't, cheating slut. Do the people of Twin Peaks feel no guilt? She could at least drop her boyfriend before dating James. Seems like being faithful is the exception rather than the norm in the town.

Nadine is hilarious, why does she keep obsessing over the damn drapes? I bet Norma was scared at first lol. Also it's uncanny how much she looks like James, are the actors relatives?

One thing that seemed to me like a continuity goof: when Catherine was talking on the phone, she was fully clothed. Then she was wrapped in the bed sheets and Benjamin Horne was getting dressed. I chuckled at him being a footfag. It's like I'm watching a Tarantino movie.

Poor Sarah is really having a hard time coping with reality. I really felt bad for her when she deluded herself into thinking Donna was Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Watched it the other day but didn't have the time to review it until today.

Lots of surreal humor in this one.

Everyone in the Horne family is such an insufferable cunt, I love it. Jerry, Benjamin, Audrey, all of them.

Leo looks almost bald with the flashlight pointed to his face, very menacing.

Ed and the drape runner were a fun event. Will they become rich as Nadine predicted?

Then the stone throwing and the table of donuts, and Tibet.

Josie Packard is gonna find the accountancy tricks, isn't she?

Leland is going crazy, even worse than Sarah.

Albert cracked me up, and I bet he's as unorthodox in his work as he is in dealing with people (and probably

The dream sequence has a particular imagery that I've always seen associated with Twin Peaks, I'm assuming we'll see a lot of similar material over the show.

What's the deal with Bob and the Plissken looking fellow?

Watched it last night.

So far the weakest of the bunch, but I'm sure it has to do with it being a buildup episode. A lot of new concepts introduced.

Those intercomms really have a lot of sensitivity huh?

Was James being trained to become part of the Bookhouse Boys?

Maddy was quite the confusing sight to me in the funeral, I had to research a bit into her because I couldn't tell she was the same one who greeted Leland earlier. After seeing the casting, it suddenly made sense why she looked so familiar (hadn't recognized her with the prescription glasses). Sadly I spoiled myself a lot about her doing this, finding out about things that happen in season 2. I guess it's par for the course with a show of this vintage, but I wish it hadn't happened.

Previous thread: >>40

After 600+ posts discussing films & TV shows (amongst other things), it is time to celebrate the new year and a new muse with a brand new thread!

The /bestemma/ Film Club will (hopefully) continue soon, and we have the following films planned so far:

Sexykiller, morirás por ella (2008)

2019, After the Fall of New York (1983)

We Are the Flesh (2016)

Las brujas de Zugarramurdi aka Witching & Bitching (2013)

The Black Gloves (2017)

La polizia incrimina, la legge assolve (1973)

If all goes well, we will also revisit David Lynch & Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks, and do an indept, episode by episode discussion of the show, like we did with the first season of Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens.

/tv/ has its movie club too and this week's movie, Virus (1980) is an absolute must-watch.

It even has crazy Norwegians in an Antarctica base.

Very impressive in every way. Great cinematography, great performances, great soundtrack. It also ties beautifully with last week's The Day of the Triffids (1962), which is impressive when you take into account that the movies have been selected from nominations by means of a randomizer. When we had our CIA/mind control/mental illness themed movies we lucked out once and then made conscious decisions but we never left things to pure luck, what /tv/ has done is impressive.

Oh and I forgot to mention a crucial part is set in 1983, like Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy.

And what is more, there's similarities to 2019: Dopo la caduta di New York that go beyond both being disaster movies with radiation.

Even the fate of women in a post-apocalyptic situation like that is an aspect the film focuses on.

File: 955dca68d759ef8⋯.jpg (150.38 KB, 800x1230, 80:123, virus1980sm4.jpg)

The whole film is on the Internet Archive (and YT) it turns out: https://archive.org/details/VirusFukkatsuNoHi1980

Not too sure about the subtitles though. Since it appears to be in the public domain, getting a torrent of it with proper English subs shouldn’t be too hard.

>what /tv/ has done is impressive.

Gahoole? Is that you ol’ boy?

>Gahoole? Is that you ol’ boy?

No, I'm BO.

The /tv/ thread has a torrent with good quality and the subs are available on http://www.opensubtitles.org/en/subtitles/7545449/day-of-resurrection-en

There are different torrents going around with different durations, the one posted on >>1887678 has the full movie.

Also my spoiler-ridden review is >>>/tv/1895917 , make sure you don't read it or watch the mp4 before watching the movie.

Hard to say, but Walter Hill, Michael Mann, William Friedkin, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Massimo Dallamano, George P. Cosmatos are all up there as well as the gentleman in your pic. John Carpenter too but he's a bit more hit-or-miss in terms of quality. Not because of lack of creativity but of budget. I love the best material from James Cameron but some of his work is bland garbage that seems more like a technical proof of concept than a film. Too much money and nothing to say.

It would be easier to me to name favorite movies than directors, but even then picking a single one is hard. Perhaps one per genre would work. I have omitted a lot there but it's hard to name them all.

The best director of all time.

John Carpenter – When he’s good he is really good. From his student film, Dark Star (1974), to his big slasher/horror films of the late ’70s & ’80s, and his soundtracks, and underrated gems like Prince of Darkness (1987) & In the Mouth of Madness (1995)… Hopefully he’s got some great films left to make. Cigarette Burns is next on my watch-list, if I can only find a copy with seeders!

Roger Corman – some of his films are clearly not great, but given the conditions he was working under (very low budgets and very short pre-production, shooting and post-production times), it is impressive how watchable they are. His finest films, the Poe adaptations starring Vincent Price, are fantastic. When you take into consideration that these were made much under the same conditions, it makes me appreciate them even more – there is a sense of artistry and class here that is all but lost in modern-day low-budget filmmaking.

David Lynch – easily the most unique mainstream director working today. Like Carpenter he also makes music and is involved in the soundtracks as well, which really completes his films & TV shows.

And, since I am not NWR, he deserves a place on my list as well. I have enjoyed everything he’s made so far.

Something our resident Phantom of the Opera devotee, WebMAnon might appreciate.

This clip is from the third Brødrene Dal series, a humour/adventure show about three brothers who go on wacky adventures, almost like a Indiana Jones show for kids. Here, one of the brothers is looking for a clue to aid them in their quest, and visits Nidaros Cathedral, hears organ music coming from below and decides to explore…

The monk of Nidarosdomen Cathedral is supposedly a ghost said to haunt the place; never seen him myself, though I have never been there at night.

Back when this first aired, in 1994, I found the monk’s infrared nightvision goggles quite spooky, and I didn’t know about the ALW musical, so I didn’t pick up on that reference.

Few stars have been involved in so much baneposting as our muse. I'll start the thread with one of the subtler and most glorious baneposts she's ever done, on Nerve. There's spoilers in the second webm, the first one doesn't reveal anything that the trailer didn't.

<Oh, you think acting is your ally. But you merely adopted the acting; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the world outside a film set until I was already a woman, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!

<The films betray you, because they belong to me!

For sure.

You think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. She was born in it, molded by it.

Now what’s the next step in your master plan?

There were quite a few big guys in this film, Persifal in particular.

Imagine a Italiansploitation ripoff of The Dark Knight Rises just the plane scene, with Sopkiw as CIA & Eastman as Bane

Indeed. I should have commented in my review that I disagree with the idea that George Eastman should be Ratchet, simply because Ratchet's strength comes from being a cyborg and not from his size.

Damn, that would be awesome
