Can you really do all the paperwork and legal shit on your own, without having an experienced mentor show you the ropes or investing thousands in a lawyer?

Yeah man, the paperwork is one of the easiest things to do and there's a ton of documentation to help you get started.
That said, you do need to do it right or you get fukt.

Well, I don't want to get fukt. Sounds like risky stuff unless you shell out for a lawyer.

That's the idea, lawyers get paid to reduce legal risk. Most of them will give you a quote when you tell them what you want, and starting a business is p standard. Should only be like $150 at most

>$150
Woah, that's low. Are there lawyers consulting dozens of would be entrepreneurs every week?

I was expecting you to say a startup would be like $5k in lawyer fees (at which point it's a lot of money to risk without a serious business plan).

There are some lawyers who specialize in small/med businesses, yeah.
Honestly at the startup stage you only need to worry about "am I legally a business, can I receive money in exchange for goods/services" and you figure out the more serious legal liability later. If you dish out a ton of cash just to cover conceivable freak of nature, you are wasting time and money.
just as an example, some startups blatantly copypaste the TOS of other websites, and once they clear series A funding or make some revenue they go back and get a lawyer to fix it.

so yeah just get the bare minimum license, register your business name and you're set. you might not even need a lawyer, i'm sure plenty of people near you know how to set up a company.

Met Sam Altman on Saturday. He was a speaker for a youth hackathon
