/boards/ is for finding/advertising boards.
Use the stickies to leave a "permanent" link to a board, but don't post duplicates in the stickies. You can also make a new thread for advertising a board. If you know of a cool board that isn't here, feel free to post it even if you didn't create it. Rules

Also check out the dynamic boards list.

Hi, I am the board owner of the relatively newly claimed boards /happy/ and /roze/ and am wondering if any one would like to join me in founding the board ring "United Boards of 8ch" (name could change).

Right now, boards are loosely linked together. The idea is to have a ring of boards covering a variety of topics for a range of different people. This ring would be something like a group, in which every board within the group would advertise everyone else. These owners would be given the chance to work together, as a team, or simply ask others for advice. This ring would also make our boards more united and secure, for there is strength in numbers.

This ring would not disallow anyone from promoting any other boards they want to promote, but they would show that they are a part of the ring and have a link to all of the participating boards (link to a separate page with links or an info-graph maybe?).

Perhaps there would be a groupchat for all of the board owners to be able to communicate easily with each other and hang out.

If you want to contact me about becoming a member, please don't be shy.

Also post in this thread if you are interested! Discussion about this idea is encouraged!

Is there a way to keep dead boards from clogging it up?

I think members should be able to vote out a board from the group, although this vote would have to pass by a +66% vote and everyone would have to vote.

A few comments on board rings:

Technically, if we're following the example of old '90s web rings, each board in the ring would only advertise two others, not all of them. In a ring of nine, board 7 would advertise 6 and 8, board 8 would advertise 7 and 9, and 9 would advertise 8 and 1, forming a loop. Being a loop would make it harder for someone to get to a specific other board, but it would also mean they'd possibly cycle through all the boards instead of just clicking the ones that catch their eye. It would also mean only two members of the ring would need to update when a new member comes along.

A good place for linking to the rest of the ring is the blotter. That's the red alert message that on this board reads "/boards/ is for finding/advertising boards." The blotter is on every page, but only takes up a single line. It would look like: "United Boards Ring: /happy/ /roze/ /anotherboard/ /yetanother/ /bye/". There would still be space for the blotter to be used for other things too, like alert messages and even other board rings.

You could create a banner with the name of the ring and of each board in it, and then every board in the ring puts it up. Or allow ever board to make its own banner and have each board display banners from the others. This would work well if there's overlap between the boards for banner theme.

Maybe each week have a thread (maybe sticky) for people from another board to come over and discuss the overlap. The other board could advertise the thread and it would share users between both and boost their rankings. Anyone on the host board who likes chatting with the visitors would then go and visit them in turn.

Another way of connecting board is to do what /leftypol/ has done and use the blotter to link to all the board's tags. This makes it easy for users to see any other boards with the same tags. /leftypol/ has no control over which boards those are though, only which tags they use and add to the blotter.

If you wanted to go all out, you could contact Hotwheels and pay for ads on 8ch. At least two board owners have done this so far, and if a ring purchases an ad together it can link to a central page that has links to all of them.

Why would you want a ring if the boards don't have something in common, though? It makes sense for politics board to advertise each other, games board to be connected, boards with no moderation, SFW boards, textboards, etc. But if it's just a few random small boards, why? Someone who wants to visit a random small board can come to /boards/ or go to the dynamic boards list.

Allow any member of the ring to call a vote and give a week after all BOs have been notified as a deadline. If a board has been abandoned, its owner will miss the deadline and won't get to vote to stay in.

Ingenious ideas, thank you for taking the time to write this out. Yeah, I wouldn't want to purchase an ad myself, but if in the future the ring wants pools money to pay for it that woud be awesome.

But, for now it's just me.

>Why would you want a ring if the boards don't have something in common, though? It makes sense for politics board to advertise each other, games board to be connected, boards with no moderation, SFW boards, textboards, etc.

I thought that we could have boards to cover generally every subject, to be a sort of one-stop type of group to find a board(s) that is relevant to your interests, one that is just as advertized as the next.

Perhaps the ring should be noted to pertain more specifically boards of lifestyle and general discussion?

 No.9629

I try to make living boards more equally competitive through /dir/, myself. Board rings can be a decent approach if they're handled well.

How board rings are supposed to work is people make sure to use each of the boards in the ring semi-regularly to create activity and get the board to take off. However, you'd need committed users willing to buy in long-term, and that's not gonna happen on here. Normally I just see board rings ending up with one or two active boards, and the rest are rather dead. The board rings around /intl/ and /kind/ are two examples of this.

You'll have to let me know how your experiment goes.

I considered joining the board ring but I think the moderation of these boards is too lenient.

In my opinion there are way too many shitposting boards already and generally rampant negativity.

It would be great if there were more boards with quality discussion and content and to

form a ring with such boards could really help the site to show that it isn't just about derogatory namecalling

with slander masquerading as free speech, but that it could be more about elevating your

creative expression and customization via your own template of the image board medium.

>I thought that we could have boards to cover generally every subject, to be a sort of one-stop type of group

There's already one-stop ways to find boards: the board list, tags, /boards/ and /dir/.

It could just be boards with owners/users who are friendly with one another, but that might not get newcomers to one enthusiastic about checking out the rest. And once all the users already know the rest of the ring, they won't need it any more and it won't be bringing new people to the whole lot as much.

But any connection at all, anything where people might think "I want to visit another board that's like this one in [whatever] way" is good enough. It doesn't have to be topic: it can be lifestyle/general, or style of moderation like >>9630 likes, or anything else.

What is your board?

One of the problems is, when it comes to my boards, I don't even have regulars that make threads.

I did have a "no duplicate threads" rule but I took it off this morning because I didn't want to make people hesitate to make a post.

One of the reasons I got into board ownership (/roze/) was because of mod intervention and abuse (not post quality related). I obviously want quality threads and quality conversations. I just don't want to intervene to conduct quality control.

I believe those who want quality conversations will try to start quality threads on their own. I want everyone to feel welcome, but those are the threads I as an individual would choose to foster, not as a person in position of power. People tend to want to do the opposite of what you tell them.

>>9631

The hope is also that by joining the ring/group, members can talk to and help other board owners so that we can all grow and improve together.

Alone our individual boards are nothing, but together we can be something.

>>>/hover/

I claimed the board in march, it had apparently been made as the result of a witty joke (/hover/-board)

It was made at the start of the year and had only one thread which had only been posted in

on the day it was made. That thread is still there. I read the ideas from it and integrated them

into fixing up the board for the goals I had in mind when I first found out that anyone could

make a custom board on here.

I browsed some of the creative boards on 4chan, like /diy/ and I thought some of those

boards were pretty sophisticated. They had creative themes of pics and discussions

which made a sort of a chan culture that was worth something. Some of them might still have that.

I mixed in aspects of /out/, /sci/ and the mysterious side of /x/ with /diy/ as the basis for /hover/

I could explain more but I'm just making these statements to see if you get what I mean by

>chan culture that was worth something.

I prefer boards that are more positively aligned like /happy/ and /kind/ so I'll be more likely to post there regularly as time goes on.

I was also interested in /cozy/ and /comfy/ for a while, they were also planning to make a board ring with /late/
