Should I really use OpenBSD over Ubuntu/Debian? I considering it because GNU/Schizophrenix distros mostly come with flawed presets.

1c392b No.23

OpenBSD or FreeBSD. If you can install gentoo or arch you can probably install these.

3eb03c No.97

OpenBSD is easy enough if you follow "Absolute OpenBSD", but it's more akin to Slackware than Debian.

Try out PC-BSD, it's like what ubuntu used to be for debian, a desktop friendly mod.

PC-BSD is based off FreeBSD, while not as zen as OpenBSD it's still a fantastic OS with great consistency.

I actually got a lot of information from bsdnow.tv for FreeBSD and OpenBSD (they're getting a lot better with OpenBSD material.) And of course, people don't use man.

PC-BSD is very nice, and I love how you can have every single fucking *wm in existence. GhostBSD is nice too, but I've never used it beyond the traditional test.

CPUs are backdoored. Signed binaries won't do fucking shit.

I've always wondered that myself. You'd figure if they could implement jails they'd do signed packages.

I do remember watching an interview with Theo de Raadt where he said that the makers of FreeBSD are more or less focused on features than security. I honestly like FreeBSD right now (although it's not as secure as OpenBSD, or [probably even] Linux), but I could easily see the project falling apart once it gets more popular.

>>98

I don't think that argument is valid, per se. If someone made a different OpenSSL/LibreSSL encryption routine (I'd puta few useless intructions in), it would render this attack useless.. I'd think.

I could see the argument with AES extensions and such though; but obviously, signed packages use asymmetric crypto. Regardless, there is NO reason why FreeBSD can't have signed packages.

Because the BSD for people who care about security is OpenBSD.

Anyone want to contribute some headers to the board? I'd like them to be funny.

Or you could put an idea below and I'll shoot up paint.

Kudos, Anon. I love the theme, it gives a nice console-y feel to the board.

I'll try it out and see what people think overnight.

EDIT: Didn't work. Plus the .gif was removed. I am not a web design guy, so some pointers would be nice. (Fucking unintentional C pun.)

Also, I think there's some better text options there. Probably a nice system/console font.

Test it in the style editor of your browser.

One way to get around the gif problem is posting it in a sticky (and optionally hiding the actual post in the css).

OK, I'll try it out when I wake up. Keep an eye on this thread if you don't mind. (If you'd like, leave your Tox id below.)

FreeBSD Migration Thread

This thread is for users who want to start using FreeBSD and have experience using other Unix-like operating systems, specifically Schizophrenix.

This post contains a small 'tutorial' or 'reference' which will help you get started into the FreeBSD world.

Introduction
FreeBSD is a server operating system which was released in the early 1990's. FreeBSD is indirectly based on the Unix Berkeley Software Distribution, which was a package of software for the commercial Unix operating system.

FreeBSD is considered by some to be a commercial operating system, similar to CentOS or Red Hat Schizophrenix distributions. Therefore, because FreeBSD is a commercial server operating system, it does not come with a GUI. If you wish to use FreeBSD with a GUI and you are a beginner, please look into PC-BSD or GhostBSD.

A key difference between Linux and FreeBSD which is often overlooked is that Linux is a kernel and FreeBSD is an entire operating system. This means that the FreeBSD project has a greater grasp on the entire operating system, whereas many Linux distributions do not have such a grasp on their operating system.

The FreeBSD Handbook
The FreeBSD project has it's own manual, which contains a wealth of easy to read data. Even some of the least attentive millennials can read it and learn something. It is similar in design and setup to this thread, however it contains much, much more information. Just about any question involving the operating system can be answered there!

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

I was trying to download ghostBSD in order to help contribute to a small OS. I can't get to the setup screen because it has a GUI instillation and my screen goes black during the time.

does anyone have the solution?

Hmm, haven't had that issue before. Is your video card family listed here? :

https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics (Section: 'Video Cards')

Have you tried PC-BSD? I know you want to support a 'small OS,' but it might be worth trying to see if it works.

(Another thing about PC-BSD is that it supports about every window manager known to man!)

OpenBSD might be worth checking out. XFCE doesn't need drivers to work, unlike GNOME3/etc.

I use xfce and it's beautiful. Just remember to enable compositing if it's lagging.

It is the radeon 6620

It wasn't there before and It didn't show compatability beforehand.

anyway I already got Xorg working on my FreeBSD distro
