Hmm…It's possible that this will have some effect, but I think it will impact professional cosplayers more than the hobbyist. It seems like more of a dispute between the two companies, not involving cosplay. Here's hoping that's all it is…

Start with spray primer for the base, then paint however you like. Spray paint works great for the base coat, then use acrylic for the details. That's how I'd do it, at least.

As long as the props don't get you in trouble with con security, go nuts. Make prop rifles if you can. Grab a wood stock online, add a black dowel or PVC pipe for the barrel, just to be sure. Some con security are nazis in all the wrong ways.
