Catholic reporting in. Fact check everything, I take no responsibility for unchecked stuff I write and this is just the best I can think of:
What authority are parents supposed to have over their children?
read some books on marriage preparation
Does a child need to obey its parents?
In lawful commands. Anything that does not violate the moral law.
Always?
^See above. Also this probably terminates once one is able to live on one's own. If they live at home after becoming an adult, some degree of obedience may also still apply, when there is financial dependence involved.
When would it be appropriate to not obey?
See above.
We are meant to honour our parents, does this mean that we have to love them too?
Jesus says to love even one's enemies.
Do you think that Jesus ever failed to obey Mary?
Not in any moral command. However, remember the story of when Jesus was found in the temple:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finding_in_the_Temple
How should parents treat their children?
See a parenting book.
Should corporal punishment be a thing?
It is morally permissible. Dunno about legally everywhere.
If so, are there restrictions?
A punishment should probably be in proportion to the crime, and obviously not be threatening to the health of the body.
Parenting and education in general, feel free to add questions as you like.
I will add a comment that people generally seem totally unprepared for marriage today and women need to be trained how to be mothers. Cath Marriage books also state that a married man should in justice be able to secure a family wage at work (able to support himself, wife, and some children with it). Employers have a moral responsibility to see to it that this is possible.
