Moderately good news, I've started praying again. After reading about the Orthodox faith, I thought of trying the Jesus Prayer, as it's extremely short and requires even less focus than a Hail Mary or Our Father (all the prayers I know by heart); I prayed the Jesus Prayer on my rosary, though. I suppose there's no major problem about that, as long as one is prayer, but it made me wonder where the line is with syncretism.

To me, it's not a relativist approach that suggests all religions are equal, but the idea that no official Church is 100% correct and none of them has convinced me enough to join in any official way. So, I'll take whatever seems good from any Christian faith and reject what isn't, based on the same idea (in which "seems good" means "matches Christ's words and general message" and not simply whether I find it convenient or not).

Is there any Orthodox here who prays the Jesus Prayer and could tell me about it? I like that it allows you to "turn off" and switch to God, which I can't quite do with the other ones, as I need to focus to remember them well.

What of syncretism combing Christianity with nonchristian ideas? What of Christians who practice Buddhist meditation?

Discuss.

As long as one is praying.

>I am become DEATH AND PRAYER, THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS

> I prayed the Jesus Prayer on my rosary, though. I suppose there's no major problem about that, as long as one is prayer, but it made me wonder where the line is with syncretism.

fun fact the orthodox know the hail mary and the rosary too

http://orthodoxwiki.org/Rosary

And Catholics also practice the Jesus Prayer (Isn't it even part of mass anyway? )

So you have done a perfectly valid using a rosary is maybe a little bit weird, orthodox have like a prayer rope though thing

> but the idea that no official Church is 100% correct and none of them has convinced me enough to join in any official way.

The Catholic Church is right and above "her the gates of hell shall not prevail"

>Is there any Orthodox here who prays the Jesus Prayer and could tell me about it?

I'm no Orthodox sure unfortunately we don't have one yet afaik but it's like any other prayer really. At least for me

>What of syncretism combing Christianity with nonchristian ideas?

NO. Mixing up the good with the bad is worse then the bad itself. That's why a single heretic is worse than 10 heathens

> What of Christians who practice Buddhist meditation?

NO. We have our own meditation and it's as good read: better as the heathen stuff

I know of the prayer rope. It is silent. And there's a thingy to wipe your tears away. That I understand, though I don't cry for the same reasons when I pray.

>The Catholic Church is right and above "her the gates of hell shall not prevail"

I admire your certainty, but I find it impossible for me to just accept it so lightly. It amazes me you can even have it as a serious opinion, and I mean no offense. How can anyone be so sure of anything?

>NO. Mixing up the good with the bad is worse then the bad itself. That's why a single heretic is worse than 10 heathens

OK, but what if I use Buddhist meditation? I don't think that clashes much. It's like swimming AND being Christian. I see no conflict.

I'm no great fan of Buddhism, for reasons, but I tend to think reincarnation is a thing.

Oops, I realise I used the Buddhist thing already and you already responded.

>We have our own meditation

What do we have? I need to learn this.

kek it was not lightly it took a couple of years and a bunch of stupidities

trust

> I don't think that clashes much. It's like swimming AND being Christian. I see no conflict.

Maybe it is not colliding in itself but it could lead to other bad stuff

>What do we have? I need to learn this.

I am not too knowledgeable on that sorry. But essentially monks are doing it half of the day with meditative prayers. The only one I know by name is the rosary.

Jesus prayer isn't syncretistic the Byzantine Catholics pray it

Also I do the same with Jesus prayer and rosary to count.

Also could substitute in, google Catholic ejaculations or ejaculatory prayer. Example: "O God come to my assistance, O Lord make haste to help me!" They're short prayers like Jesus prayer.

Mexico is the hotbed for a lot of syncretism. Some Mexicans have recently started worshiping a female grim reaper that they believe has done miracles.

wowowow, I know boards where you get banned for this :^)

>Some Mexicans have recently started worshiping a female grim reaper that they believe has done miracles.

According to the Wiki aarticle that goes back to the begginnings of Vera Cruz and the Spaniards arrival.

Also that's interesting

>Some devotees consider Santa Muerte to be an eighth archangel. Still some other followers, albeit a minority, believe that Santa Muerte is not a saint, since she has traits of jealousy and granting evil requests. These same followers, however, state that she is not Satanic either, but merely a fallen angel in purgatory trying to win back God's favor, and that is the reason she grants so many miracles

>On the first day of every month, Enriqueta or one of her sons lead prayers and the saying of the Santa Muerte rosary, which lasts for about an hour and is based on the Catholic rosary.

That is actual open demon worshipping. Everyone that's what the devils do: they take something holy like Saint Reverence/most likely the holy virgin and then they corrupt it. How can anyone think that's ok?

Someone must have started with that. Let's dress up a skeletton and worshipp it and bring it sacrifices. Seems legit.

Poor mestizos:

>The number of believers in Santa Muerte has grown over the past ten to twenty years, to several million followers in Mexico, the United States, and parts of Central America. Santa Muerte has similar male counterparts in the Americas, such as the skeletal folk saints San La Muerte of Argentina and Rey Pascual of Guatemala

>with altars containing both frequently found in drug busts. However, some warn that Santa Muerte is very jealous and that her image should not be placed next to Catholic saints or there will be consequences.

The actual ….?

>The colors of Saint Death votive candles and vestments are associated with the type of petitions made.

>[…]

>Black represents total protection against black magic or sorcery, or conversely negative magic or for force directed against rivals and enemies.

>In January, 2011, the self-proclaimed archbishop of the church, David Romo was arrested and charged with belonging to a kidnapping ring in Mexico City. In June, 2012, Romo was sentenced to 66 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 666 times the Mexican minimum wage for the crimes of robbery, kidnapping and extortion.

>Some of her most devoted followers are those individuals associated with petty economic crimes, committed often out of desperation; such as prostitutes, pickpockets and thieves

>Santa Muerte is also seen as a protector of homosexual, bisexual, and transgender communities in Mexico

>In March 2012, the Sonora State Investigative Police announced that they had arrested eight people for murder for allegedly having performed a human sacrifice of a woman and two ten-year-old boys to Santa Muerte

Does anyone still need convincing how evil syncretism is?

> Her intercession is commonly invoked in same-sex marriage ceremonies performed in Mexico.[37][38] The Iglesia Católica Tradicional México-Estados Unidos, also known as the Church of Saint Death, recognizes gay marriage and performs religious wedding ceremonies for homosexual couples

SO BRAVE

—————

And now the tl,dr, everything you need to know

>The Vatican has condemned the cult of Santa Muerte in Mexico as blasphemous, calling it a "degeneration of religion".[52] Mexico's Catholic Church has accused Santa Muerte devotees of mixing Christianity with devil-worshiping cultism.[5] The Catholic Church has linked Santa Muerte to Satanist practices, saying she is being used to mislead desperate people.[3] They state that Santa Muerte is an idol, the worship of which has been rejected by God in the Old Testament. Veneration of this or any other idol can be a form of inadvertent devil-worship, because regardless of the intent of the worshipers, the Devil can trick people into doing such things. Priests regularly chastise parishioners, telling them that death is not a person but rather a phase of life

Thanks anon for bringing it up. It's a perfect example

Stop giving false testimony, brother in Christ. Venezuelanon was banned for trolling, that’s why I was confused about him not being a Mormon. (As he stated it somewhere else)
