Deus vult?

>"The Russian Orthodox Church has backed the country's parliamentary decision to give President Vladimir Putin permission to use military force in Syria, saying the fight against terrorism is a "holy war". The head of Synodal department for church and society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, told journalists on 30 September that the decision from the upper chamber of parliament, the Federation Council, to authorise air strikes in Syria was "consistent with international law, the mentality of our people and the role that our country has always played in the Middle East", according to Interfax news agency.

>He added that Russia cannot be indifferent while Christians and other minority groups are being destroyed in the region. The interreligious council of Russia released a statement in support of military operations against terrorism in the Middle East.

>"The fight against terrorism is a HOLY struggle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world to combat terrorism," the priest said."

Eastern christians are cool.

But I dont support war. And I dont support using christ as a tool for it.

Interesting, thought not at all out of character for the Russian Orthodox Church. Can't really say that its a bad move to be honest, at least morally speaking. It could make me nervous as a worshiper to see my Church throwing its weight around what is most definitely a secular initiative by a secular government, granted against a religious enemy.

Hopefully all goes well and Russia is able to save some Christians and other innocents.

I could see where religious motivation comes in though. Islamic extremists are particularly vile when it comes to religious tolerance. Christians are legitimately being hunted and executed. If there was ever a good reason to call a crusade…

But of course this is primarily a political conflict, no question.

As a fedora, would you support a crusade?

>>6619

Definitely, but there is, as you said, a difference between a true blue crusade with faithful men selling their farms to buy swords and defend the Faith; and the private interests of secular governments and corporations that just happen to intersect with the well-being of minorities in the region.

The Russian government would have done its deal regardless of what the Orthodox church said.

Mymy. They did not declare a crusade when they actually lost Syria but now they think it is legit.

I'm suspicious. Putin is a pragmatic and Christianity a mere tool for him. If any good comes from this it is by chance.

Well, it sort of depends. I can't really support a crusade for purely religious reasoning. Such as if the Catholic church were to declare a crusade to retake the holy land (I realize this has no chance of happening). That would be a lot of purposeless bloodshed.

But, I'm no fan of people of any religion being hunted because of their religion. If a crusade is what it takes to topple a horrific regime like ISIS then I guess some good came out of it.

Thanks for your answer

I agree with almost everything you said

How.do you reconcile this view with the bloody history of the roman church?

Stop twisting my words. The crusades were a good and Holy thing. This however:
