In context, he was talking about women who would come to church adorned very richly just to show off their wealth or status to each other. Basically, they were making it about themselves rather than God. The message in the passage is not that women should wear head coverings, but that when we go to church, we must do it to worship God rather than to flaunt ourselves.

The context here is important.

Another commonly attacked section roughly in the same vein is where Saul (his name was still Saul, the Romans just couldn't pronounce it) said for women to have long hair.

He wasn't meaning that all women needed Crystal Gayle length hair, he was making a jab at the Temple of Athena who had been sending their Priestesses to 'covertly' cause a problem in the church.

The problem was that the Priestess of Athena all shaved their heads as a requirement…

You'll find that many of the controversial sections of Saul's writing are actually something similar to this or >>8088 - very situational when taken literally, but beyond the surface it holds a overarching meaning that still holds value for today.

I've focused on the head covering issue, but the verse also says it should be done because women should be subservient to man, corinthians 1:10.
