>every religion is going to have people who are doing it wrong
Obviously. It was meant as a humorous stab, not as a reflection on catholicism. Robert Barron actually makes a good point of this in one of his recent videos where he talks about traditional radical atheist arguments against the priesthood. He's quite correct too, you find bad eggs everywhere because we're just human. I'm not judging catholicism based on child molestation or the crusades or other low-tier garbage anti-theism arguments.
My point is more that those catholics I encounter are almost *universally* hostile and defensive both here and elsewhere. Not just intolerant of what they perceive as wrongful teaching but actively aggressive and rude against people who disagree with them. That doesn't strike me as attempting to emulate Jesus and, hence, is bad fruit indicating a rotten tree. There is a subtle difference between suggesting that someone has got it wrong and calling them a filthy unwashed heretic and calling for their heads on a spike.
Interestingly, the LDS typically get this bit right. I disagree with them on theological grounds but the community spirit and consistent but tolerant approach to interpreting scripture is commendable.
