Does anyone on /christ/ see a problem with parents collaborating to deceive children into believe in Santa Clause? There is an argument that Santa Clause encourages kids to be less critical thinkers, and that the story is perpetuated more for the pleasure of parents than the children. Is it better for kids to know their parents gave the presents?

 No.8859

Parents should tell their children about the actual heretic-slugging St. Nicholas.

I don't really have a problem with it because its about recapturing that sense of fantasy and wonder and amazement that's only possible with the innocence of a child. Since the parents themselves experienced it and found it pleasant, I think its fine for them to want their children to experience it as well.

However, when the child grows up and starts asking critical, logical questions, parents usually answer honestly and tell them the truth about this fantasy. It certainly would be a great problem if they didn't. I suppose most parents, though dedicated to their belief in Santa Claus, would not have the time or the know-how to defend the belief to their children, causing a demand to grown and apologists to arise, using arguments from ignorance and escapism to explain away the inconsistencies and impossibilities of an all-knowing, all-seeing fat antartican who dishes out presents and coal based on his own "objective" and fair system of morality.

I don't really see a problem with it. I think parents just want to recapture that amazing and fleeting experience of a fantasy that is only possible through the innocence and naivete of a child. If they found it to be an enjoyable experience its reasonable that they'd like their children to have it as well.

my parents never told me santa was real.

But, they werent cockblockers about it. They still teased me and let the thrill of the holidays to get me.

 No.8865

I see it as a good old fable. You know how they have a meaning or a metaphor? Santa Claus I feel is meant to instill the excitement of gift-getting, and eventually gift-giving. albeit in a secular way. I think it would be interesting to talk about saint nicholas instead

That 'argument' is retarded, it sounds like its straight out of the frankfurt school

 No.8963

On the contrary, it encourages kids to be critical. When a child learns that Santa doesn't real, the child realizes that things they are told may not always be true and firmly held beliefs could be false. Things should be questioned and evidence should be investigated.

Take that as you will, christfriends, but questioning dogma is good if the dogma is detrimental and it is better to be a smart person that questions dogma than a smart person who does not.

Personally I find the anglo interpretation of Santa to be distasteful and even degenerate. The fat man has become a god of consumerism. He drives people towards expressing affection through senseless moneyspending and bastardizes a holiday that is supposed to be about family and all that shit, or at least more wholesome forms of hedonism. Further, he makes parents lie to their kids. It is a good lesson that those that you love and/or look up to can be wrong, but you should be able to trust your folks to not intentionally deceive you. It breeds contempt and distrust.

I'm not saying it's jews. But it's jews.

It's sad.

Hotwheels used to dickwave at everyone: The russian government, the "aussie" media, copyright bullies, etcetera. It was hilarious. And he used to come to /b/ and occasionally other boards to shitpost with us. Now we never see him and the website has been castrated and is falling apart. People are leaving and interesting topics are becoming fewer and further between. Even the shitposting has become lame.

>It breeds contempt and distrust.

I mostly agree with you up to this point, but I think that's maybe going a bit far, isn't it? Sure, its a weird tradition that gets played out once every year that's hard to justify, but I don't think it really breeds actual contempt, or distrust, on the whole. Am I the only one who didn't really care when they found out? Heck, I don't even remember when I found out, it was more of a gradual realisation than a shock. When the Santa idea became more marginalised in our home, all the wonder of childhood Christmas was still there, it didn't really change much. I think there was probably a transitory period when I deep down knew it was just a story but played along with the tradition. It just doesn't seem to me like finding out would be a big deal to the vast majority of children, provided Santa Claus isn't treated as the main thing about Christmas in their home.

I don't know, maybe my British experience of it is different, and Americans, or wherever else in the world you happen to be from, take it much more seriously. Or maybe US movies and TV shows exaggerate these things.

Most kids aren't going to flip out and go all edge on their parents after finding out. But it could cause subtle changes in attitude that really don't need to be there.

>provided Santa Claus isn't treated as the main thing about Christmas in their home

That's a good point.

I think Santa is also used to help spread the joy of gift giving. After the Child finds out the truth and remember how their parents were always happy when they opened gifts they didn't take credit for, They realize that Christmas isn't all about getting gifts and that giving them is just as rewarding
