Among Christians(evangelical) or how it originally started becoming popular. The Dreyfus affair is what kicked off the whole movement. They also had a charismatic leader named Theodor Herzl. This guy had a lot of interesting ideas. He wanted the jewish state to be created in Africa because he thought the middle east was too unstable which it was. Also before the trial he proposed the idea of all the jews converting to Catholicism to try and end the hatred of the Jews.

whats mind blowing its that most of them were atheist. How they found the energy to go trough all that just for some concept of race is worrying.
