well, I went to service, got ashes on my head, and now I have to wait till easter to eat meat and do other various indulgent things.
that is, I'm pretty sure I think of it the same way a catholic does.

are you talking about Jesus criticizing the Sabbath? His main critique about that was all the rules surrounding and that it became man serving the Sabbath instead of the other way around. Besides Christians have 2-3 main religious holidays depending on if you count fat Tuesday or not. There may be more depending on where you go but that was probably due to the influence of their culture or paganism. You could argue that many holidays in Christianity are due to these influences but it was to be inevitable because Christianity basically lost the entire middle east during the rise of Islam and in order to convert more people in Europe they had to add traditions.
