Ones I recommend starting with
A lot of these are art or older films, and I haven't gone into much detail about them. Here's some of the best, most easily accessible from the list in my opinion.
>The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Well-crafted, orthodox and beautiful film directed by Mel Gibson. Filmed entirely in authentic Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin, and depicts Christ's execution quite brutally (but with good reason and in good taste, imo). Set during the last 12 hours of Jesus' life.
>The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Pretty simple but extraordinarily well-animated version of the Exodus story.
>Ida (2013)
Good Polish art film about a life-long nun exploring her post-Holocaust origins and morality in Communist Poland.
>Therese (1986)
Powerful depiction of the monastic life of St. Therese of Lisieux. Really a treasure. Slow burning, but captivating. French.
>My Night at Maud's (1969)
Good French film that explores Catholic morality and theology in the modern era.
>The Flowers of St. Francis (1950)
Really neat and touching depiction of the life of St. Francis of Assisi and his monastic order, the Franciscans. Italian.
>Calvary (2014)
Haven't seen this one, but heard good things about it. Set in Ireland, dramatic film about a Catholic priest.
I have probably missed a lot! I have a particular taste and I'm Catholic, so there is probably a lot lacking for Protestants. Hopefully most of these have universal appeal though.
P.S. does anyone have that /christian/ cinema image?
