What denomination tends to wear a wooden crucifix as a necklace?

There's a big guy at my gym, with huge muscles and a big beard and he wears a wooden crucifix. And he has a little black book he reads in between sets

Catholics, Orthodox and certain high church Protestants wear crucifixes. But probably all you have to do is ask him.

>big guy

For you?

I guess OP will have to clarify, but when I saw "wooden crucifix", even though crucifix has a more specific meaning, I took it to mean a simple wooden cross, which sounds like more of a low church Protestant thing.

bb3389 No.258169

Normal wooden crosses are worn mostly by protestants.

Bigger variants are worn by catholic/orthodox priests and monks.

ya he's probably protestant, only one orthodox church and two catholic ones in my area

Oh, and know the difference:

A cross is a cross, a crucifix is a cross with Christ depicted on it.

966e6e No.258172

>>258171

oh his was just a cross, no Jesus on it. and it was smallish not big

bb3389 No.258173

Then probably a protestant.

That said I kind of like the wooden ones too.

Franciscans usually wear tau crosses

At least he's not an Andersonist. Then the cross would be idolatry and the book would be full of vain repetitions.

I'm thinking he's Orthodox. Some laity either use metal or wooden ones. I've a metal cross necklace.

Crosses are common to most Christian groups. Mormons (not really Christian, but…) do not use crosses. Protestants on the more iconoclastic side of the spectrum might also avoid them, but that is not characteristic of Protestants as a whole. Catholics and Orthodox also use crosses of course. For examples, a "pectoral cross" is part of the outfit of Catholic bishops, and laity also commonly wear cross necklaces, so you can't say that Protestants wear crosses, but Catholics wear crucifixes. Even non-Christians not infrequently wear cross necklaces. It's probably about the most generic Christian symbol there is. A more effective way to find out his affiliation would be to ask him.
