Are Christian tattoos good or bad? I know they are popular among Ethiopian Christians but not so much in europe

373857 No.259185

Maybe

04c01a No.259199

Leviticus 19:28

You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.

There is no such thing as "Christian" tattoos.

b9d666 No.259204

The only law we have against tattoos is the verse that for ids drawing on your skin or making cuttings for the dead. This of course was under Judaic law, and even then was not even required for righteous Gentiles. It was for Jews alone. So it is safe to say it is irrelevant today, the only people who would even debate it are Messianic Jews.

So now knowing that it is lawful to us we must ask this: Is it a good idea?

I never liked them, but that is my taste. I actually had a plan for if I were to get one, but my wife does not like them and I don't like them on her so we never did.

It would be a Cross on my torso, left of center, made up of pictures of important moments in my life (conversion, marraige, etc.) on one bar, and important moments in our faith in the other. (Moses and ten commandments, Crucifixion, and ending with the second coming, and judgement)

The Dante's inferno game cross scarification was my inspiration for it.

That's what I thought.

I like subtle tattoos not to big.

>>259199

Not interested in obsolete Judaic injunctions. The verse before that speaks against trimming your beard, and trimming jew-lock sideburns! Give me a break Chaim…

04c01a No.259209

cuttings for the dead

and tattoo yourselves are

separate commands.

the passage ISN'T referencing tattoos for the dead, it means tattoos for any reason. Again, we are told that the body is a temple and we are not to deface or destroy or defile the temple of the LORD.

God's people are called to be separate from the world, even though we remain in it. Tattoos are common throughout the world, and either pagan or secular and selfish.

Just because you want to have the freedom to engrave your vain imaginations and musings on your body, as if it were a temple to yourself, does not give you the right to do so. The Bible says we were bought for a price. We are of the LORD. We are in his family. A spiritual family.

21efe7 No.259224

Bad. Tattoos are almost always narcissistic and disrespectful of the body, which is a temple. Christian tattoos are being the Pharisee who prays loudly in public.

There are a few cultures who tattoo Christian symbols in visible places; these are always cultures in Muslim lands and they do this (esp. to children) in order so that they are not taken as sex slaves or Janissaries by the Muslims. R U in danger of this? Anyway it is viewed as a lesser of two evils in that case and not as something "good" per se.

>>259224

I feel like that doesn't always hold, though. Take, for example, coptic christians. They tattoo their wrists because in Egypt there is a huge risk of Mudslimes deciding to kill Christians for theirfaith. The tattoo stops people from pussying out and denying Christ.

It's pretty clear they're not sinful, which leaves it up to the individual's taste.

Personally I plan to get a small cross on my wrist or arm, akin to pic related.

b38cd3 No.259250

Tattoos smear and serve no function. If you want pretty use body paint or a fucking canvas.

2840ff No.259263

>>259199

>>259209

Take your judaizing elsewhere, it's not wanted here.

Tattoos are stupid unless it's part of your patrimony, so unless you're Coptic or Ethiopian don't bother. It's not sinful, but it is pointless and silly.

04c01a No.259320

>>259263

protestants hate other protestants who preach obedience to God's decree's. They call them legalistic.

Christians hate other Christians of any kind who talk about obedience to the Word of God. They call them Judaizers and persecute them. Judaizers were persecuted, driven out and even killed.

The accusation is that following God's Law and wishes are somehow evil. Yet those who persecute do so with hatred in their hearts, some even commit violence or murder.

Christianity is about your relationship with God. When you have a tattoo, it is *most* likely you will not be looking at them as often as others will. Just because you might look holy to others, God is more interested in your heart.

If your goal is to bring glory to God, charitable actions in His name would bring more Glory to Him. I do not believe you can bring God glory by doing the things he tells us not to do.

By the way, it's not the Jews telling you to not get a tattoo, it is God telling His chosen people, which you are now apart of, not to.

>for the dead

Many ancient Hebrews had piercings. There is nothing wrong with them or tatoos unless they are exaggerated, blasphemous or depict dead people.

That being said, tatoos are stupid. Don’t do that.

125bf5 No.259330

>or depict dead people.

In the sense of zombies/undead or in the sense of people who died?

04c01a No.259331

>>259329

you are shifting the conversation in order to prove your point, which is a novice and dishonest move.

First, The passage I mentioned makes no mention of piercings. Second, where are you pulling your source for making the statement that many ancient Hebrews had piercings. Is that fact, was it a sect of Hebrews or was it the mainline Hebrews.

Third, I'd rather take God's decree of why I should or shouldn't do something. Instead of dead ancient Hebrews or your random 2016 opinion, I will trust in the Word of God.

81c3c6 No.259338

its forgivable if:

1. you are coptic / living in a muslim hellhole

2. you got them before being saved

Might not really be related to the discussion, but when it is said that you shall not make any cuts on your body, does it include nail biting and biting the skin around your nails?

Because I've been doing it for more than 10 years now and I always wondered if it would be considered as self mutilation in the eyes of the LORD, and thus, frowned upon.

Tattoos and most purely other cosmetic body mods are usually just a sign of vanity. I give people with them the benefit of the doubt, but I can't think of a person I know with tattoos who isn't into really shallow, stupid things almost exclusively, and I've met loads of strangers with tattoos who just rubbed me as arrogant. Tattoos themselves are tasteless and tacky. I wouldn't shun somebody with tattoos (my two best friends have them), but tattoos are just disgusting and make your body look dirty and trashy. Unless you're a sailor, a soldier, a prisoner, a gang member, or a member of a religion like Coptic Ethiopians, you really have no excuse to have a tattoo, and only then only certain tattoos with the traditional symbology associated with the subculture are okay.

Pic related is an acceptable tattoo.

he's right about the piercings. there are lots of lines referencing israelite women having nose rings. at mount sinai a lot of women removed their nose rings, not because they were wrong, but because they wanted to donate the gold to the building of the tabernacle. there are plenty of references afterwards as well. not sure if there are any references to men wearing piercings in scripture, but ive heard that according to jewish lore king david had many piercings

tattoos were definitely forbidden though

In the Soviet gulag system it was pretty common for prisoners to tattoo communist figures on their chests so that if they ever faced a firing squad the guards would be reluctant to shoot, because if defacing an image of these figures wasn't a crime it was at least very frowned upon by the Party.

Probably not. Seems more like a prisoner superstition/tradition, like most prison tats. The Reds would probably just shoot you in the head.

Cuts for the dead refers to a pagan religion around that era.

Essentially followers of Tammuz (The guy killed in Gilgamesh, third dynasty Sumerian king who had been deified) He was killed and his followers believed that if everyone on Earth mourned him and cut and whipped themselves and cried at once he would come back from the dead.

The tradition lives on in Shia Islam where during the Ashurah festival (oddly one of the names for the mother of Tammuz) They whip and cut themselves in memory of Hassan the Grandson of Mohammed.

Are you doing it to show your friends and everyone else how "good" of a Christian you are?

If yes, then the accolades of the world will be your reward.

Are you getting a tattoo to be closer to God?

Unnecessary and silly, same reason why wearing a cross around your neck doesn't make you a better or worse Christian.

Are you living in a country ruled by Muslims or another faith that is known to persecute and murder Christians for their faith?

Even if the answer to this one was yes, which it isn't, I still feel it as redundant. Having a tattoo of a cross on your whatever isn't going to "remind" you to not deny God even under pain of death, it'll just end up with them killing you before they even ask.

If you truly love the Lord, I don't think he's going to be upset at you for marking yourself with an image of the cross or something similar.

The Old Testament does contain his commands, the Talmud is the folklore and traditions codified at about 200 A.D. and bundled with the Old Testament.

However remember that Gentiles only got some commands. Thou shalt not kill in the garden, Pharaoh punished for adultery with Sara in Genesis. Yet the Torah commands only Jews to circumcise, and it says if a Jew gets unkosher meat. he can sell it to a Gentile.

Rightly dividing the word to see your responsibilties is hard.

The New Testament will reiterate anything you need to know, but the Old Testament is still necessary for understanding the New.
