I have been reading the Bible, and I have come across a contradiction that confused me. I would like to discuss the answer to my question, but this thread can also be used to discuss other confusion that emerges when reading the Bible.

In Leviticus, God specifically says that marrying or have sex with a woman that was the wife of your brother is unholy. But earlier, in Genesis, Onan marries his brother's widow, and is then killed when he refuses to consummate the marriage properly.

Is marrying the ex-spouse of a family member allowed or not?

That's the Levirate law, if your brother died before he gave his wife heirs you would be obligated to marry and impregnate his wife to give her heirs on your brother's behalf. That's the only situation where it was not prohibited.

Why would I read it first? Wouldn't it make sense to read it in the order written?
