I've been a sinner all my life 20yro (unintentionally) or have arrogantly justified my actions. This is not that i haven't sought repentance or had a visceral feeling after but i have never gone to the church and confessed my sins (prot 'ere). I've always chewed on my sins and asked for forgiveness in prayer (as little to nearly none till recently) or thought over my mistakes. What should i do? in Aus Melbourne i have never gone to church but i feel as though i should check out a orthodox church. Has anyone ever been in this situation or know how to approach a new church?

Also i'm concerned I've only found god due to my fear of what might be the end days approaching and not out of divine intervention.

Please help me i'm kind of lost. Sorry for making a thread over this :s

go with your gut instinct on this one

relax and take it easy

dbaaec No.260353

Trust your instincts. If you are being called to orthodoxy, let no one stop you.

Also, just saying things out loud doesn't mean that is what is in your heart. Which I think you might be feeling.

Do you actually want to stop those sins? Are you actually rejecting that part of yourself? When Paul talks about "it's the sin inside me that does it", it's the recognition that even if you do sin, if you are at war with that part of yourself, it's the recognition of rejection of that sin.

Read more scripture?

Looks like your almost there. The way you talk about it makes it seem like as if you're walking into the big bad wolf when it is completely the opposite.

I would ask God about it. Say something like: "Please, God show me if this is the Church for me. Give me the strength and courage to go so I can learn and get close to you…etc" Then JUST go in and sit in a pew, relax and pay attention. People will be friendly and might even hug you.

None of my friends and family are religious although some people i know like to say they are 'spiritual' whatever that means so i have never been in a church with friends/ family or when i was young except for the odd holiday. I think i want this to be a greater part in my life.

As far as salvation i'll have to see where god takes me i suppose.

Thanks guys

First of all the fact you are being convicted off your sins is a positive sin. The Bible calls us to believe and repent. Repentance is a turning away from sin towards God and His kingdom.

I would strongly advise you don't go to an Eastern Orthodox church let alone a Roman Catholic church.

If anything find a Presbyterian church but if you want a conservative church most Lutheran churches are great. Reformed churches are going to be your best bet.

> This is not that i haven't sought repentance or had a visceral feeling after but i have never gone to the church and confessed my sins (prot 'ere). I've always chewed on my sins and asked for forgiveness in prayer (as little to nearly none till recently) or thought over my mistakes

Understand that due to Adam's fall we inherit a sin nature and so you will be prone to sinning while in your fleshly body.

You don't confess your sins to a priest and get absolved. You confess them to God. Understanding you have transgressed his laws, and that you sincerely wish you hadn't. But obviously God's grace is working within you and it's obvious you see yourself as a violator of his law worthy of hell.

> Has anyone ever been in this situation or know how to approach a new church?

Most churches are going to be very welcoming. Best advice though is to show up half an hour before the service if not an hour if you want to really discuss with the pastor. Otherwise you can just show up 10 minutes before and worship. You will be welcomed. People will generally ask you what made you come, why our church and so and son.

>Also i'm concerned I've only found god due to my fear of what might be the end days approaching and not out of divine intervention.

You should fear God. This is good. For his elect he has prepared a new heaven and earth. Learn to love God. Appreciate what he has done.

Also what denomination where you brought up in? Anglicanism?

Psalms 111:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise."

Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

Jesus brings people to Himself many ways, even through fear. Go to Him and be saved, just don't live in fear IN Christ.

2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline."

The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom, nothing wrong with that.

Just fix your life and set it straight and let your deeds show others how great your Father in heaven is so that they may praise him also. Do not try and get guilty for the unsaved as that is arrogance.

Take it easy and God bless.

I wasn't brought up in any, but my private school was Anglican. I can't remember and neither can the folks but i was baptized with my twin either in a Presbyterian or Anglican church

nothing wrong with turning to God out of fear, fam.

we follow the law of our country / state out of fear of punishment, otherwise we wouldn't do so at all.

god is working within you, but you still have the choice to squash this feeling down as "it was just my imagination" and disregard it

but if you disregard it you're also squashing your ability to play the "you never gave me a sign or revealed your existence to me" card when you're before the white throne of judgement

but no for real, church doesn't get you into heaven but it's a good way to get you going. want to know what church to go to? pray about it.

no really, pray about it. you dont have to be a christian to pray to God. ask him to grant you wisdom and make it clear to you what he wants you to do.

if you're expecting him to part the skies and tell you step by step what he wants of you over some coffee and a bagel, I don't think it'll happen. but what i can guarantee is that he will make it know to you where you need to go, in one way or the other.
