So, I was having this discution with about religion and war.

He claims that religions are used as tool to promote wars and how it ultimaltly causes violence.

He used the crussades as an ultimate example

So, I was wondering.

How many wars, in general, have the religion as a excuse?

How many of said wars had Christianity as a reason?

Any good books about the crusades and its reasons?

You just have to take a look at islam to destroy that "ultimate example"

well i can tell you right now the crusades were completely justified, as to whether or not you consider them very 'christiany' depends on your world view they were very christian

Well, to be fair the also said that ISIS needs Islam to function.

He said that religions are used as tools to manipulate people.

I guess, the crusades was more a Best example on how cristianity can be used for war.

I haven't read enough about them to make a decision on the matter if they were justified or not. Any good book on the matter?

He's right in the sense that Christianity unified the Europeans and that if Christianity didn't exist, it probably wouldn't have been possible for them to get off the ground. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing though, unless he thinks that all wars are unjustifiable (remember that if he says that, he is condemning WWII, thereby making him a Hitler supporter, Nazi and major antisemite ;^)).

But he's full of it because people fought wars all the time before Christians were around (take the Romans for example). And if he tries to tell you that it was just because they were superstitious pagans, then slap that foolish infidel.

to be honest i haven't read any books on the crusades but I've listened to some podcasts that's still a credible source r-right

Bill Warner has a longer vids, he's also written some books on islam and the crusades but this is a quick and easily digestible vid

Well, he pulled something I think it was major bull, claming that Hitler was religious nut job who used faith as a tool of control.

That is were the base of his argument, Governments uses religions(not just christianity) as tool to control the people.

The worst wars in human history had little to nothing to do with religion. The USSR and Eastern Bloc were explicitly anti-religion and they fought a number of wars. It seems to me that your friend is confusing correlation with causation. People fight wars over access to resources. Any other reason is secondary.

Atheist wars:

Napoleon

WW1

WW2

Stalin, Hitler, Mao, etc.

Copernicus gave way to Darwinism which gave way to Socialism/Communism and the cancerous "enlightenment".

Not defending the antichrist actions of the Papal Rome (inquisition, crusades and inventing horrible torture devices) that has murdered and burned millions of Christians at the stakes, but the atheists have done equally bad if not worse.

You only have to look at the French Revolution and Bolshevik Revolution to see how barbaric nations become when they turn atheist.

The crusades weren't even that extreme. Not even the Muslims cared about them as they failed. People only care about them because Muslims are the minority group nowadays.

In any case, religion is rarely a primary reason for war. Even in the case of the Crusades, it's mostly because the Ottoman empire kept harassing Christain lands for centuries.

The only religion that tends to be a primary reason for violence is Islam. Muslims are a problem everywhere there is a significant minority.

ISIS IS Islam.

The crusades is a good example of how the righteousness of Christianity motivates people to defend others against the islamic invasors
