What's the story with the genealogies in Matthew and Luke?

If critical consensus is right, and they're not historical, does that mean that Jesus isn't the Messiah?

y they all a bunch of niggers?

Thanks, that was elpful.

It didn't address one problem which still puzzles me, which is that scholars think it was unlikely that genealogical records would have been available to peasants. If you have any resources on that I'd be very grateful.

They look like characters from the Boondocks, which I thought was quite funny.

I don't have any resources on that but I can speculate. what makes you think that peasants were keeping these records? Certainly someone the Royal family tree is important enough to keep track of. There already were a lot of converts at time. so one of them might have had connections on the rank to get access to such records.

Papyrus 52 (P52), which contains a small fragment of John’s gospel, (18.31-33, 37-38) is considered to be the earliest copy of New Testament text. Discovered in 1934 by C. H. Roberts, it is believed to have been copied no later than 150 AD but no earlier than 100 AD.

I've researched this THOROUGHLY! So both claim to be of Mary, however there is an anomaly in Matthew. It skips a few people and organizes in groups of 4 until the last one.

This says Joseph was the father of Mary in Greek. HOWEVER there is a simple explanation and why most translations say Joseph was the husband of Mary.

The genealogy would have been kept in Aramaic where both father and husband are the same word literally meaning "Patriarch of the house" Early church fathers refer to a book called the Gospel if the Nazarenes that was just Matthew without the first two chapters. This geneaology may have been added later by a guy translating literally.

Origen (Who was not sainted and has a history if lying) Claims personal friends who were relatives of Jesus showed him their copies of the genealogy and said both were of Mary, but literally most everyone's husband died early and there was levirate marraige attributing kids to the brother of their dead husband.

I literally stayed up two nights researching this in original tongues because it bothered me so much.

So for the tl;dr yes they are both legit.

The Genealogy of Jesus: Genealogical Difficulties in Matthew and Luke

THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS- Introduction

As far back as the third century A.D. people have wrestled with the question of who Joseph’s father was. Here in Matthew it says: Joseph is the son of Jacob, — in Luke it says Heli is Joseph’s father.

THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS- Who Is Joseph’s Father?

With the wide assortment of solutions that have been proposed to explain who Joseph’s father was, the issue becomes not so much whether this problem can be resolved but, rather, which answer presents the best solution. Well, while there are a lot of ways to clear up the apparent difficulty — here’s what I think is the most reasonable:

THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS- Two Different Lineages for Two Different People

The two genealogies are going to vary obviously because they trace two very different lineages of two very different people. Matthew charts Joseph’s line, while Luke charts Mary’s. The genealogy found in the opening chapter of Matthew is intended to legitimize Christ’s claim as Messiah and the rightful ruler over Israel, by charting the kingly line of succession to which Joseph belongs. Jesus (as the legal firstborn of Joseph) becomes the lawful Heir to David’s throne.

THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS- Why the Son of Heli?

On the other hand, Luke’s genealogy gives us the physical ancestry of Jesus, which also traces back to David. Of course the question can be asked: if Jesus’ line of physical descent is linked with Mary, why isn’t she included in the list? Why do we find Joseph once again — this time as the son of Heli? To explain the absence of Mary’s name, all we need to do is realize that it was not customary for the Jewish people to list women in direct lines of descent.

THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS- Mary as Heir

In addition, had Heli actually died leaving no male offspring, the inheritance would, of course, have passed over to his daughter, Mary. Under such circumstances, provisions were made to preserve the name of the husband’s father-in-law, who in this case happened to be Heli. Bottom line: according to Jewish law, Joseph became the son of Heli upon his marriage to Mary.

THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS- Conclusion

Obviously the infallibility of the Bible does not rest solely on this one particular explanation. But it does amply demonstrate that the alleged discrepancy can be reconciled. On the genealogical difficulties in Matthew and Luke, that’s the CRI Perspective. I’m Hank Hanegraaff.

EVERYONE in Israel kept genealogy records. Their land ownership is based on genealogy. This would be the first thing the illiterates would be forced to memorize and the first thing anyone would write down if they could hire a scribe. Up until the captivity these genealogies were already recorded in the old testament. They only had to memorize or record the last 200 years.

When your entire society is based on bloodlines you WILL record them.

These genealogies could also skip generations. You could say "Grandfather begot Father" as well as "Grandfather begot Grandson" and they're both correct. Both genealogies list 14 generations between significant events, which is a sacred number.
